The Viking longships carried Viking
warriors far across the sea. They
survived storms, rode the waves and
dodged rocks. The Vikings used a big
rectangular sail in the open sea.

When they were on rivers or near to the
coast, they would have pulled down the sail
                                            and rowed the ship instead.

Since wood rots, there is little left of
Longships today. The Vikings used to bury
rich people in ships.
The Vikings were excellent sailors.
The vikings came from Norway and Sweden , they travelled to :
Iceland , Greenland , Germany , France , Denmark , Russia ,
Britain and New found land ( which was actually Canada .)
How ships were built

A Viking ship was built beside a river or an
inlet of the sea.

     Sails and oars

A Viking ship had one big square sail made of
     woven wool
When there was not enough wind for the
sail, the men rowed with long wooden oars.
To steer the ship, one man worked a big
steering oar at the back end.
                                                Viking ships
Finding the way
Viking longships could sail in shallow water.
Vikings sailed close to the coast whenever So they could travel up rivers as well as
possible, watching for landmarks. across the sea. In a raid, a ship could be
hauled up on a beach. The Vikings could
jump out and start fighting, and then make a
quick getaway if they were chased.
Viking longship battles

                 On longships the vikings would
battle by laying down boards to
get to the other ships and
                 throwing spears
