However, ensuring quality, designing effective online formats, evaluating content without feedback, and sustaining funding for updates present challenges. For OERs to be most effective, analysis and design for learning, interaction between students and instructors, categorization of content, and feedback/revision pathways should be included.
Virtual learning environments (VLEs): an evaluation of their development in a...
This document summarizes the findings of a survey evaluating the development and use of virtual learning environments (VLEs) in a sample of educational settings in the UK. The key findings were that VLEs were still at an early stage of development, were most effective where staff used technology to enhance classroom learning, and had the strongest implementation where senior managers provided resources and support. Barriers to greater use included a lack of training for staff, concerns over the time needed to develop online content, and limited remote access to VLEs by students. The Kaleidoscope Open Course Initiative aims to improve student success, particularly for low-income and underrepresented students, by creating open educational resource (OER) course designs that can be adopted across institutions. Phase I of the initiative developed 11 OER courses impacting 9,000 students, which improved average student success rates by over 10% while eliminating textbook costs. Student feedback indicated that the OER courses were of equal or better quality than traditional materials and that students preferred the free, digital access provided. Phase II plans to develop additional courses frameworks and grow the number of participating institutions.

Teachers were surveyed about their use of hands-on materials like LEGO sets in the classroom. The majority of teachers reported using hands-on materials for more than 10 lessons per year, especially for problem solving, math, and non-computer games. Hands-on materials were used to do experiments, projects, create models, and program robots. Teachers said hands-on materials helped students learn better by cooperating, working harder, and performing like gifted students. Experience with hands-on materials and professional development most influenced teachers to change their practices and beliefs in how students learn.

This paper reports on the efficacy of a mobile learning intervention that combined ‘push notifications’ and game principles within a timed quiz app. An institutional interdisciplinary case study was conducted which compared rates of student retention and academic performance with their usage of a purpose-designed learning app. Leading up to lectures the app ‘pushed’ daily quizzes to students’ personal mobile devices and then rewarded them with feedback, points, badges and a position on a leaderboard. It was found that since the introduction of the app there was an increase in student retention rate of 12.23%, an increase in academic performance of 7.03% and a significant positive correlation of .40 between students’ scoring highly on the app and achieving higher academic grades. Conclusions are made in regards to what these findings mean for the future research into higher education learning enabled via mobile app technologies. More broadly, we discuss the implications of our findings in regards to the key higher education stakeholders: universities, educators and students. The Claremont Consortium administers a biennial survey to the approximately 5,000 Sakai-using undergraduate and graduate students in its member institutions [Claremont McKenna College, Claremont Graduate University, Harvey Mudd College, Keck Graduate Institute, Pitzer College, Pomona College and Scripps College]. The presentation summarizes findings from the 2008 and 2010 surveys. We identify changes in student use of Sakai; student assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of courses that use Sakai; which tools students find most useful in their courses as well as tool usage patterns, and student suggestions to improve Sakai and the ways that it is used in their classes.

User perspectives
Voice over the internet tools can support language learning by allowing oral communication over the internet. A study collected data on user perspectives of these voice tools from language tutors and students. Interviews and questionnaires found that while the tools encourage dialogue, tutors must be aware of how to properly correct errors and support affective factors in technology-assisted language learning. For best practice, it is important to understand the nature of online communication and give students control over their learning experience with input tools.

JISC has supported technology-enhanced assessment for over a decade through their e-Learning Programme, focusing on areas like online testing, formative assessment, quality processes, and curriculum redesign. Their current work examines how to better develop learner skills in self-assessment and use of digital tools for educational purposes. While e-assessment systems and assignment submission tools are commonly used, more advanced techniques have seen limited adoption. JISC's publications and projects aim to illustrate effective practice and build capacity in assessment and feedback through strategic use of technologies.

Audience response systems (ARS) permit students to answer electronically displayed multiple-choice questions using a remote control device. In higher education, more and more lecturers use ARS to engage their students more intensively, especially when it comes to mass lectures. This paper deals with the questions how ARS as an innovative technology can foster the feedback of students during ex-cathedra teaching and how this feedback can contribute to quality assurance in academic teaching. The examination of advantages and challenges of using ARS as well as of their didactical and technical potentials combines theoretical considerations with an online survey among the more than two hundred students enrolled in a mass lecture held in winter term 2015 at the University of Innsbruck. Additionally, the responsible lecturers were asked to share their experience using an ARS for the first time. In closing, the paper provides some answers if and how ARS are valuable instruments to enhance quality assurance in higher education.Technology Power Point
Educational technology can enhance curriculum by improving student achievement, engagement, and higher-order thinking skills. When students are grouped for cooperative learning activities using technology like iMovie and Windows Movie Maker, they develop more positive attitudes and like their classes more. Additionally, students' attitudes toward learning and self-concept improved when computers were used for instruction. Research also found that interactive video programs increased students' problem-solving skills. Students who used technology scored higher on achievement and standardized tests compared to students without technology. Learning technology skills provides preparation for the modern workforce.

Paul Hagan and I presented some of the work we have been doing within the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Ulster to enhance the first-year experience of introductory chemistry. This presentation gives an overview of some of the innovations that have been introduced.
These presentations were given as part of the Innovation In Teaching and Learning Support Programme of Lunchtime Seminars for 2008/9 organised by the newly formed Centre for Higher Education Practice at the University of Ulster.

OER: Benefits and Challenges

SUNY OER Story: From grassroots to scale-up
SUNY's Open SUNY Textbook program began as a grassroots effort to address the high cost of course materials for students. It has since expanded statewide to help scale up the use of open educational resources (OER) across SUNY campuses. The Open SUNY Textbook provides a tiered membership and support model to help campuses at different levels of readiness to adopt, build, and create OER courses and materials. It aims to increase access to affordable course content for students while supporting faculty in developing high-quality open resources.

There are correlations between in-school and out-of-school mobile device use for learning. Frequent users tend to have support networks that help them learn to use their devices. For teachers to effectively integrate devices in the classroom, they need training on the devices' capabilities and how they can enhance learning. The educational impact of student device use is limited if teachers do not also use devices. Teacher approval of autonomous device use in lessons affects student use and attitudes. Developing effective mobile learning practices takes time as teachers learn to use devices to support learning rather than as just tools.
OER Impact at Community College: eLearning 2014
The research project aimed to build the most comprehensive picture of OER impact. It was a collaboration between The Open University and CCCOER, funded by Hewlett, involving surveys and interviews. The survey of over 130 community college educators found that most had adapted OER but fewer created OER. Respondents believed OER improved their teaching and student outcomes like engagement and satisfaction. Over 60% said OER saved students money and over 1/3 thought it promoted student retention.
OER Impact at Community Colleges
This presentation reports on findings arising from the collaborative research carried out by OER Research Hub and Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER).
- Most of the respondents have used some sort of OER, though only around a quarter create OER
- Most report positive effects on their teaching practice as a result of OER use, particularly around peer collaboration and improved subject knowledge
- A smaller proportion (but still in excess of 40%) feel that OER use directly leads to improved reflection on pedagogical practice
- Positive effects were also identified for learners, especially around increased self-reliance, subject interest and experimentation
- There were similar numbers who thought OER wasn’t making much of a difference and a core of what might be termed ‘anti-OER’ responses
- There were mixed views about whether OER was saving institutions money, but approximately 2/3 felt that students had saved money
- Around 1/3 believe that OER is improving student attrition while around 1/2 believe it is not having an effect
- Only around half of OER creators have used open licensing
- There is a core of advocates who understand and actively promote OER; they adopt open educational practices and believe it leads to benefits

SUNY OER Story: From grassroots to scale-up
SUNY's Open SUNY Textbook program began as a grassroots effort to address the high cost of course materials for students. It has since expanded statewide to help scale up the use of open educational resources (OER) across SUNY campuses. The Open SUNY Textbook provides a tiered membership and support model to help campuses at different levels of readiness to adopt, build, and create OER courses and materials. It aims to increase access to affordable course content for students while supporting faculty in developing high-quality open resources.

There are correlations between in-school and out-of-school mobile device use for learning. Frequent users tend to have support networks that help them learn to use their devices. For teachers to effectively integrate devices in the classroom, they need training on the devices' capabilities and how they can enhance learning. The educational impact of student device use is limited if teachers do not also use devices. Teacher approval of autonomous device use in lessons affects student use and attitudes. Developing effective mobile learning practices takes time as teachers learn to use devices to support learning rather than as just tools.

OER Impact at Community College: eLearning 2014
The research project aimed to build the most comprehensive picture of OER impact. It was a collaboration between The Open University and CCCOER, funded by Hewlett, involving surveys and interviews. The survey of over 130 community college educators found that most had adapted OER but fewer created OER. Respondents believed OER improved their teaching and student outcomes like engagement and satisfaction. Over 60% said OER saved students money and over 1/3 thought it promoted student retention.
OER Impact at Community Colleges
This presentation reports on findings arising from the collaborative research carried out by OER Research Hub and Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER).
- Most of the respondents have used some sort of OER, though only around a quarter create OER
- Most report positive effects on their teaching practice as a result of OER use, particularly around peer collaboration and improved subject knowledge
- A smaller proportion (but still in excess of 40%) feel that OER use directly leads to improved reflection on pedagogical practice
- Positive effects were also identified for learners, especially around increased self-reliance, subject interest and experimentation
- There were similar numbers who thought OER wasn’t making much of a difference and a core of what might be termed ‘anti-OER’ responses
- There were mixed views about whether OER was saving institutions money, but approximately 2/3 felt that students had saved money
- Around 1/3 believe that OER is improving student attrition while around 1/2 believe it is not having an effect
- Only around half of OER creators have used open licensing
- There is a core of advocates who understand and actively promote OER; they adopt open educational practices and believe it leads to benefits
Open educational resourses
Open Educational Resources (OER) are freely accessible educational materials that can be legally copied, used, adapted and re-shared. OERs range from textbooks to videos and include materials for both students and educators. For students, OERs provide decreased costs, availability of materials anytime and anywhere, and access to hundreds of free university courses. For educators, OERs allow for clarity on reuse of materials, increased collaboration, and social responsibility in providing education for all. However, finding and curating quality OERs takes time, and some resources lack accessibility standards or teacher skills to effectively implement OERs.
Feedback, Agency and Analytics in Virtual Learning Environments – Creating a ...
The project comprises of a review of the literature and current technical provision of assessment and feedback in Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs); and data collected from ‘Sandpits’ with students and lecturers in two HEIs in the UK. A ‘Sandpit’ is a type of creative design-thinking focus group where participants are stimulated by a narrative of a scenario around the use of a product, object or artefact and are encouraged to critique, discuss and re-design it (Frohlich, Lim and Ahmed, 2014; Casanova and Mitchell, 2017). These ‘Sandpits’ look to clarify the role of VLEs in assessment and feedback, through understanding students’ perceptions of feedback and how they are being addressed and understanding teachers’ perceptions of the constraints they face. We are exploring what is available, looking to improve interface designs and features, and present these to VLE product designers.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
