WELCOME TO THE BIG SKIES
AND GOLDEN PRAIRIES OF THE
BEAUTIFUL MIDWEST.
A big state with a big heart and a
rich history, Kansas is the heartland
and technically the center of the
United States. A welcoming place
of imagination, grit, ambition and
adventurousness, and the birthplace of
Nobel prize winners, great poets, famous
astronauts and even a U.S. president.
KU is located in beautiful Lawrence,
Kansas — a true college town on the
banks of the Kansas River. Safe and
friendly, it boasts international cuisine,
extensive outdoor recreation, shopping
and a thriving arts scene. Rolling Stone
magazine recently named Lawrence
one of the “best lil’ college towns” in
America.
As a KU student, you will have easy
access to the capital city of Topeka and
cosmopolitan Kansas City. Both cities
are less than 40 minutes away and
offer shopping, culture, entertainment
and thriving businesses that provide
corporate connections for internships,
employment and career-building
experiences.

LOCATION
6  |  KU Academic Accelerator Program
The University of Kansas offers multiple ways for international students to enter any of the nearly 200 fields of study
available at KU. You may enter through Standard Entry, through the Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) or through
the Applied English Center (AEC). The program that is best for you depends on your academic background, language
skills and career interests.
No matter your choice of program, all students’ English language ability is tested on arrival during International
Student Orientation. This ensures that you are taking the exact courses you need for your language level. We have
the right courses for everyone! If a student enters through the AEC as a pre-AAP student, the length of time it takes to
progress to the KU AAP depends on many personal factors, such as effort and starting English proficiency. Students’
English proficiency and effort will affect how quickly they advance to academic course work or the KU AAP.

The reason I chose KU is because
I am a basketball fan, and KU is
famous for its basketball team. Also
Kansas is the center of the United
States, which means there probably
aren’t as many Chinese students as
there would be compared to the East
and West Coast schools.

My brother, who lives in
Connecticut, was happy that I
chose KU. He told me that Kansas
is a lot less expensive than the
East Coast and that I don’t have to
think twice about shopping
in Lawrence.

  • 8. 6  |  KU Academic Accelerator Program The University of Kansas offers multiple ways for international students to enter any of the nearly 200 fields of study available at KU. You may enter through Standard Entry, through the Academic Accelerator Program (AAP) or through the Applied English Center (AEC). The program that is best for you depends on your academic background, language skills and career interests. No matter your choice of program, all students’ English language ability is tested on arrival during International Student Orientation. This ensures that you are taking the exact courses you need for your language level. We have the right courses for everyone! If a student enters through the AEC as a pre-AAP student, the length of time it takes to progress to the KU AAP depends on many personal factors, such as effort and starting English proficiency. Students’ English proficiency and effort will affect how quickly they advance to academic course work or the KU AAP.
