OVERVIEW
INDUSTRY 101
The hospitality industry is a subfield of the
service sector that includes lodging, food
& beverage, event planning, travel, and
tourism. As an experience-driven market,
hospitality relies on customer service
to power revenue and is susceptible to
rapidly changing consumer expectations.
A report by Alice and YouGov found
that over 80% of travelers are willing
to pay more to receive local experience
recommendations from their hotels such
as guided tours and food tastings. The
industry experienced a 46% decrease
in revenue from 2019 to 2020 due to
COVID-19 and related travel and contact
restrictions. The market improved in 2021
and 2022 and is expected to make a full
recovery by the end of 2023.
6. 6 SPECIAL OFFER
Leisure travel (trips taken by individuals on their own personal
time for enjoyment and relaxation) and hospitality is the largest
small-business employer in the United States. Over 15 million
people in the U.S. work in hospitality and leisure, a number that
is still rebounding from COVID-19 shutdowns.
Food and beverage are the most lucrative subsectors in the
hospitality industry. The U.S. food and beverage market is worth
just over $1 trillion and is expected to grow to over $1.5 trillion
by 2030. Comparatively, the hotel industry is valued at $258
billion while travel and tourism are worth $1.2 billion.

FUTURE OF WORK
Hotels began venturing into smart
technology before COVID-19, but the
pandemic accelerated the need for
technology that enabled contact-free
options for customers. As a result, digital
keys, touchless check-in options, and
mobile app integration became more
common and are now standard in large
chain hotels. Technical innovations like
these heighten personalization and
ultimately improve customer experience.
Smart technology also aids in revenue by
reducing utility and energy costs.
In 2015, Japan experimented with robotic
technology with the humanoid robot,
Pepper. Pepper robots were designed
to read emotions by analyzing facial
expressions and vocal tones. Production
on Pepper robots was paused but experts
have predicted the hotel industry is likely
to veer further into robotics and will
one day rely on robots to perform as
concierges, room delivery services, and
cleaning staff.
OVERVIEW
9. 9 SPECIAL OFFER
While robotics and smart technology
have emerged as focal points for major
hotel chains, consumers also show
significant interest in more organic
experiences. Services like Airbnb and Vrbo
have allowed consumers to also act as
hosts and have created an affordable
alternative to high-priced hotel stays.
Pay and wages have long been an area
of contention throughout the hospitality
industry. The federal minimum hourly
wage of $7.25 has been in place since
2009, despite year-over-year increases in
the cost of living expenses nationwide.
As a result, pay increases have become
a political talking point. In 2021, 21
states enacted incremental minimum
wage increases with the ultimate goal of
reaching $15 per hour.
