Hi, today we’re going to talk about the development of film over time.
Films started out slow with only moving images created by light and shadow.
This is a video of one of the first moving pictures to be shown to a paying audience and is called The Pyramids.
Instead of having to be shot outside when the sun was up in order to get the lighting that the filmmaker wanted, the introduction of the lamp meant lighting could be set up indoors and be used at any time of day.
Universal pictures is over 100 years old and you can see by the logos how much it has changed and developed in that time.
The Jazz singer set the pathway for all other films that feature sounds and started the move away from silent films.
The Film industry adopted the Production Code which was a set of guidelines describing what was and was not acceptable to put in movies shown to the public.
Snow White was Walt Disney’s first feature length film and set the pathway for all Disney films since then as well as got more people interested in animation and the film industry as a whole.
Cinema industry was threatened by TV some cinemas went bankrupt and closed due to TVs increasing popularity.
Studio system in Hollywood declined because many films were being made on location in other countries. Also the increase in independent producers & production companies contributed to the decline.
Audiences increasingly watching movies on home VCRs leading to film studios to (unsuccessfully) attempt to take legal action to ban home ownership of VCR. Eventually the sale and rental of films on home video became significant to the film industry.
The internet has had both positive and negative effects on the film industry – digital copies are much cheaper to produce so cost the company less money, however, they are also cheaper to buy so the company makes less revenue. Also, it is very easy to get hold of a digital copy of a film without having to buy it through the use of illegal websites and downloads. This means that the company loses money because many people aren’t actually buying the film.
Netflix began streaming in 2008 This effectively kick-started the film industry’s embrace of the internet as a platform on which to sell, rent and stream movies. This and other similar services like Amazon Video and Now TV and others have meant that people don’t even have to leave the house to buy a DVD – just set up an account on a streaming service and you will have access to hundreds of movies and TV shows.
