From across the spectrum of governmental agencies, a selection of suppressive activity is examined relying on quotes from the involved and affected participants themselves.
This document summarizes strategies used to undermine public acceptance of climate change science and discusses ways to more effectively engage the public on this issue. It notes that corporate interests have funded front groups and think tanks to manufacture doubt about climate science and make lack of certainty a political issue. As a result, news media often portray climate science as a two-sided controversy when there is actually a scientific consensus. It suggests joining online networks for information and action, developing new communication strategies, and promoting a values-based debate around climate solutions rather than perpetuating manufactured controversies.
The document is a U.S. Senate report that lists over 400 scientists from more than two dozen countries who have voiced significant objections or criticisms of the so-called "consensus" on man-made global warming. The report profiles scientists and their views that dispute claims from the UN IPCC and Al Gore regarding climate change. Many of these scientists have criticized how their colleagues have been intimidated or unable to publish skepticism of man-made climate fears. The report serves to counter the idea promoted by some that the number of skeptical scientists is dwindling.
This document discusses how information about climate change is communicated and framed by different groups. It explores how scientists communicate their findings and who believes climate change is real based on evidence. It also examines how fossil fuel industry groups have run disinformation campaigns using tobacco industry tactics to sow doubt and delay action, similar to how tobacco companies denied health risks of smoking for decades.
Intro to Communication Studies Research PaperAlistair Jones
This document provides a summary and analysis of Al Gore's 2006 film "An Inconvenient Truth" about the dangers of climate change. It discusses how the film helped communicate climate science to a general audience through compelling visuals and emotional storytelling. While some critics argued the film was too politicized, most reviews were positive and studies found it significantly boosted public concern about climate change. The film was largely responsible for raising widespread public awareness of human-caused climate change in the United States.
- A report on climate change submitted by the U.S. to the UN contradicted the Bush administration's position on global warming. It conceded human activity causes warming and warned of severe environmental impacts.
- The report recycled claims from a discredited Clinton-era report that had been subject to widespread scientific criticism. It undermined Republican efforts in Congress to block climate change legislation.
- The author argues President Bush must withdraw the report, dismiss disloyal employees who promoted it, and withdraw the U.S. signature from the Kyoto Protocol to escape this "political quicksand."
12 risks with infinite impact full report. Samuel Samaz
The report outlines 12 global risks that could have nearly infinite impacts on human civilization or humanity itself. These risks were selected through a review of scientific literature, workshops with experts, and consideration of risks with limited impact or no viable countermeasures. The 12 risks are: 1) extreme climate change, 2) nuclear war, 3) ecological catastrophe, 4) global pandemic, 5) global system collapse, 6) major asteroid impact, 7) supervolcanic eruption, 8) synthetic biology, 9) nanotechnology, 10) artificial intelligence, 11) unknown consequences, and 12) future bad global governance. The report aims to inspire action and collaboration to address these risks through risk assessment methodologies and views addressing them as an opportunity

Communicating Science Across the Divide: Lessons from the Climate Change & Va..._klburke
This document discusses challenges with communicating science related to controversial issues like climate change and vaccination. It notes that thousands of studies support the scientific consensus on these issues but some people reject the science. It explores why, finding that people's cultural identities can shape how they process scientific information. Effective communication focuses on consensus, public health impacts, and local action rather than fringe views. Simple, repeated messages from trusted sources on issues like increasing renewable energy can build understanding.
The document discusses how money and concentrated wealth have contributed to ignorance around climate change through several mechanisms:
1) Wealthy individuals and groups like the Koch brothers who have made their fortunes in fossil fuels have spent vast sums funding advocacy groups and research to sow doubts about the science of climate change.
2) Enlightenment thinking that humans can control nature has led to a paradigm where scientists and politicians ignore or downplay evidence of human-caused climate change.
3) The concept of "epistemologies of ignorance" describes how powerful groups actively ignore or discredit knowledge to maintain the status quo and their own privilege, keeping alternative perspectives and knowledge from gaining acceptance.

Climate Change: Science Versus Consensus and AlarmismTJSomething
This document discusses skepticism about claims of catastrophic human-caused climate change and analyzes Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth". It notes that global temperatures have risen in recent centuries but that natural factors also influence the climate. The author argues that climate models have limitations and that some scientists have distorted data to support alarmist views for political or funding reasons.

This thesis examines the legal, public health, and ecological health consequences of global climate change through three published books. It analyzes how climate change impacts the environment, health, and property. It argues that uncontrolled climate change poses security risks similar to world wars that will last centuries and could lead to the failure of regions like Africa and China. The works conclude that climate change represents a crisis for civilization and that humanity must transform both how it lives and thinks to confront this major threat. The thesis aims to understand climate change's health effects from both public and ecological perspectives and discuss how legal and other disciplines can help humanity address the climate crisis.
Evaluating online sources on Climate ChangeMartin Balupa
The group collected sources on good and bad sources of information about climate change. They found two good sources from a library database, including a current quote stating climate change is caused by human activity. They evaluated the sources as authoritative and accurate based on the authors and evidence. They also found a bad source from an online article about hacked emails questioning climate science. They deemed this a bad source as it was not peer-reviewed, sought to discredit science, and lacked strong evidence.
This document discusses the relationship between science, politics, and pseudoscience. It examines different ways of categorizing scientific disciplines and proposes a new categorization called "post-normal science" to describe fields with high uncertainty and stakes, like climate change. It also discusses three case studies - the Superconducting Super Collider, the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository, and global climate change - to illustrate different types of scientific endeavors based on their levels of uncertainty and decision stakes. Throughout, it emphasizes the importance of understanding how scientific knowledge interacts with political contexts and authorities.
This document summarizes and analyzes the USA Patriot Act passed shortly after 9/11. It provides background on the Act and examines some of its most controversial provisions, such as expanded surveillance and investigative powers for law enforcement and national security agencies. The document reports on two surveys of academics, attorneys, and police chiefs that found concern about the Act's impacts on civil liberties protections in the First and Fifth Amendments. While supporters argue the Act is necessary to fight terrorism, many professionals and civil liberties groups believe certain provisions infringe on constitutional rights.
A Discussion on Ethics of Political Influence On Environmental PolicyDanielle Holland
This document discusses the negative influence of political and corporate interests on environmental policy and regulation. It provides several examples of US EPA administrators who compromised ethics due to pressure from administrations or prospects of political gain. The Bush administration had close ties to ExxonMobil that influenced environmental policy against the Kyoto Protocol. Recent legislation aims to limit scientific integrity and influence of the EPA, threatening to veto bills that oppose corporate interests. Overall political pendulums have created instability in environmental policy over time.

The document discusses a study analyzing the visual framing of climate control in the New York Times from 1851 to the present. It describes the three cycles of climate control coverage: 1851-1940 focused on rainmaking and ethics; 1940-2006 covered weather as a weapon and international agreements; and 2006-onward centered on geoengineering. The study analyzed 209 images from 25 articles in each cycle to identify common visual frames and how they have changed over time. It also examined the representation of scientists in media coverage and challenges in analyzing the subjective visual data.

Compexity and Climate: Crash in the World's Food SupplyPaul H. Carr
MIT professor Jay Forrester developed system dynamics, which analyzes complex social systems. He suggested counterintuitive solutions often fail with complex systems as causes and effects can be distant in time and space. Forrester and others like Dennis Meadows predicted issues like food shortages, which Meadows now expects could crash by 2030 due to climate change impacts disrupting agriculture. System dynamics examines unintuitive behaviors to better address root problems versus surface symptoms.

Whenever the people are well informed, they can be trusted with their own government. —Thomas Jefferson
A hot-button issue in the American/International Political climate is climate change. This has also been heavily influenced by media interpretation and coverage. The scientific evidence supports the perspective that global climate change is the result of the impact of our species on the environment. However, some hold the perspective that it is just part of the earth’s natural cycle. In the meantime, billions of dollars are being invested in projects and initiatives related to climate change. This has become a very divisive issue, with strong opinions about the topic. It also raises the question of who should be trusted when it comes to issues such as these—the people running our governments, scientists, or the media.
After reviewing this week’s material, in your initial response, consider each perspective. In America, what “side” of the climate change issue do you hear about most from politicians or the media? Do you think this could have an influence on the direction in which climate change research is headed? Why or why not?

This document discusses a thesis analyzing the relationship between fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution sources and socioeconomic status in North Carolina. It provides background on the environmental justice movement and reviews literature showing low-income and minority communities often face greater environmental health risks. The thesis will use geographic and economic analysis to examine if disadvantaged communities in North Carolina bear a disproportionate burden of PM2.5 pollution from point sources. The research aims to provide insights that can guide more equitable pollution control policies and better health surveillance of at-risk populations.
Feygina, Jost, & Goldsmith (2010, PSPB) System Justification, Denial of Globa...Irina Feygina, Ph.D.
This study examines how system justification tendencies relate to denial of environmental problems and resistance to pro-environmental action. The researchers hypothesize that people are motivated to defend the societal status quo, even when it poses threats like environmental destruction. They propose that greater system justification will be associated with increased denial of environmental issues and less commitment to environmentalism. The study also explores whether system justification can explain known differences in environmental attitudes along political, national, and gender lines. Specifically, it tests if higher system justification among conservatives, strong national identifiers, and men can account for their lower levels of environmental concern compared to liberals, weaker national identifiers, and women. Finally, the researchers investigate whether encouraging environmental change as consistent with protecting the status quo can
The document examines how the political identity of different media outlets in the US (The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today, and The Washington Post) affected their coverage of a report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The analysis found that the conservative WSJ differed from the more liberal NYT and WP in its framing of the report by questioning climate science conclusions, while USA took a more moderate approach. Coverage was assessed based on prominence, frequency of themes, framing of issues, and a normative analysis of language used. The results showed the outlets' reporting was aligned with their perceived political identities and ideologies.

Webinar Recording: https://www.panagenda.com/webinars/hcl-notes-and-domino-license-cost-reduction-in-the-world-of-dlau/
The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Don’t worry, we can help with all of this!
We’ll show you how to fix common misconfigurations that cause higher-than-expected user counts, and how to identify accounts which you can deactivate to save money. There are also frequent patterns that can cause unnecessary cost, like using a person document instead of a mail-in for shared mailboxes. We’ll provide examples and solutions for those as well. And naturally we’ll explain the new licensing model.
Join HCL Ambassador Marc Thomas in this webinar with a special guest appearance from Franz Walder. It will give you the tools and know-how to stay on top of what is going on with Domino licensing. You will be able lower your cost through an optimized configuration and keep it low going forward.
These topics will be covered
- Reducing license cost by finding and fixing misconfigurations and superfluous accounts
- How do CCB and CCX licenses really work?
- Understanding the DLAU tool and how to best utilize it
- Tips for common problem areas, like team mailboxes, functional/test users, etc
- Practical examples and best practices to implement right away

Webinar: Designing a schema for a Data WarehouseFederico Razzoli
Are you new to data warehouses (DWH)? Do you need to check whether your data warehouse follows the best practices for a good design? In both cases, this webinar is for you.
A data warehouse is a central relational database that contains all measurements about a business or an organisation. This data comes from a variety of heterogeneous data sources, which includes databases of any type that back the applications used by the company, data files exported by some applications, or APIs provided by internal or external services.
But designing a data warehouse correctly is a hard task, which requires gathering information about the business processes that need to be analysed in the first place. These processes must be translated into so-called star schemas, which means, denormalised databases where each table represents a dimension or facts.
We will discuss these topics:
- How to gather information about a business;
- Understanding dictionaries and how to identify business entities;
- Dimensions and facts;
- Setting a table granularity;
- Types of facts;
- Types of dimensions;
- Snowflakes and how to avoid them;
- Expanding existing dimensions and facts.
