Within the different stories found in the Quran is also present the events of the life of Prophet Yunus (AS), otherwise known as Jonah.

1. The Story of Yunus (AS)
Notall the storiesandeventsthattookplace withdifferentProphetsoverthe agesare foundinthe
Quran,but those are presentare the onesAllah(SWT) hasdecidedtorecordforall eternity.Fromthe
recordedstoriesand events,we canunderstandthatthese are verysignificantforhumansto
understandone aspectof life oranother.Many storiesof the Prophetsof the pastwere revealedinthe
Quran byAllah(SWT) so that theirknowledge maystrengthenthe heartsof ProphetMuhammad(SAW)
and the Muslimsandso that theymay learnfromthem.
”And each story We relate to you fromthe newsof the messengersisthat by which We makefirm your
heart.And there hascometo you,in this, thetruth and an instruction and a reminderfor thebelievers.”
(QuranSurah Hud Ayah11:120)
Withinthe differentstoriesfoundinthe Quranisalsopresentthe eventsof the life of ProphetYunus
(AS),otherwise knownasJonah.Like the restof the storiesinthe Quran,thiseventisnot alsopresentin
itsentire entiretyinone spotbutisfoundat placeswhere Allah(SWT) willedit.There are manylessons
that can be foundin the life of ProphetYunus(AS).There isanentire surahinthe Quranthat is named
afterthisprophet.Howeverthere isnomentionof the prophetinthe surahexceptnearthe veryend.
”Then hasthere notbeen a [single] city that believed so its faith benefited it exceptthe peopleof Jonah?
When they believed,We removed fromthemthepunishmentof disgracein worldly life and gavethem
enjoymentfora time.” (QuranSurah YunusAyah10:98)
ProphetYunus(AS) wassentto the people of Naynawa(Nineveh)inMosul whichisinthe north of
moderndayIraq. These people didnotbelieve inthe message of the Prophetregarding the onenessof
Allah(SWT).ProphetYunus(AS) became annoyedwithhispeoplethattheyhadnot acceptedthe
message andleftthem.Allah(SWT) saysinthe Quran,
”Then be patientforthe decision of yourLord,[OMuhammad],and benotlike the companion of thefish
when he called outwhile he wasdistressed.”(QuranSurah QalamAyah68:48)
Thisis the pointintale that we have to learnaboutpatience whenpreachingpeopletowardsthe wayof
Allah(SWT).Allah(SWT) ishere teachingProphetMuhammad(SAW) andbyextensiontoall Muslimsto
be patientandnot be hasty like ProphetYunus(AS) becauseitisAllah(SWT) thatguides.ProphetYunus
(AS) hadrealizedthatthe punishmentof Allah(SWT) wouldnow come sodecidedtoboarda shipand
leave withafew companions.The shipwascaughtina stormand the people decidedthatthere wastoo
much weightandsomebodyhadtobe thrownoverboard.Lotswere drawedthree timesandthrough
Allah’swill itwasProphetYunus(AS) whodrew three times.He wenttothe sea,andin SurahSaffat
Allah(SWT) mentionswhathappenedtoProphetYunus(AS) later.
”And indeed,Jonah wasamong themessengers.
[Mention] when heran away to the laden ship.
And he drewlots and wasamong thelosers.

2. Then thefish swallowed him,while he wasblameworthy.”(QuranSurahSaffatAyah37:139-142)
ProphetYunus(AS) wasswallowedalivebyahuge fishwhere he wasstuck.It was inthat place that he
realizedthathismistake andmade supplication toAllah(SWT) forforgivenessandhisprayer was
answered hence this eventteachesusthe importance of believinginAllah(SWT) andHisdivine decree
and have patience.
”And [mention] theman of the fish,when he wentoff in angerand thoughtthatWewould notdecree
[anything] uponhim.And he called outwithin the darkness,'Thereis no deity exceptYou; exalted are
You.Indeed,I havebeen of the wrongdoers.'”
”So We responded to himand saved him fromthe distress.And thusdo We savethe believers.” (Quran
Surah AnbiyaAyah21:87-88)
