Mrs. Mallard is told that her husband has died in a railroad accident. She initially grieves, but then finds herself feeling an unexpected sense of freedom and joy at the thought of having control over her life without her husband. She revels in her newfound independence and autonomy. However, when her husband unexpectedly returns home, the shock of seeing him alive proves too much for her heart and she dies of joy.
