The State of Animal Welfare: It's Worse Than You Think
1. It’s Worse Than You Think
The state of animal cruelty and what we can do now
2. How I got here …
“Teaching a child not to step on a
caterpillar is as valuable to the
child as it is to the caterpillar.”
—Bradley Miller
3. A matter of degree
“If they breathe, they live.
If they live, they feel.
If they feel, they love.
If they love, they are aware.
If they are aware, they have a soul.”
—Anthony Douglas Williams
4. “Let all live humanely, for every creature seeks peace in its
life. As with humans, animals also have a heart beating
within them; their hearts too are compassionate and filled
with love. Cast a glance of mercy so that from the darkness of
inhumanity a new dawn begins.”
–Darshan Singh, spiritual leader, mystic poet and humanitarian
16. “The people who are crazy enough to think they
can change the world are the ones who can.”
—Steve Jobs, founder of Apple
17. What can be done?
Start small
Encourage, not judge
… but prepare to be judged, not encouraged
Collaborate with others
Pick one area to make a difference
18. Me up at does
out of the floor
quietly Stare
a poisoned mouse
still who alive
is asking What
have I done that
You wouldn’t have

This is probably the toughest topic to combat when speaking to people regarding the reduction of animal suffering. What about cleaning products? If they harm living creatures of one order, aren’t they likely to harm my family, too? Before my girlfriend applies make-up or my boyfriend mists himself with cologne, don’t we want to know whether the substance will burn us or poison? When developing medicines, isn’t it just to understand as many of their potential side-effects as possible before administering the medicine to a child?
Dilemma: If animals aren’t people, then experiments are invalid. If animals are people, then experiments should be conducted.
