The Rules
the problem
the solution?
The rules will follow.…
Be respectful.
Pay attention,
or else class is a waste of time.
Show a sense of humo[u]r. Seriously.
Practice a mild form of hypocrisy.
Dignity—have a calm and private
conversation when you disagree. No
public clamo[u]r or uproar.
Work and Attendance
• Turn in your work on time.
• Complete and submit in-class writing during
  class before you leave.
• Attend class. More than two absences
(excused or not) will hurt your grade.

*Exceptions are made for students having a valid medical excuse (note from
practitioner), documented family crisis or religious holiday.
Timeliness is appreciated.
Asking Questions

• Ask helpful questions during class.
• Don’t hold questions until the end of class.
• If you have questions that require extra time,
  schedule an appointment through email.
• Class ends at 8:15.
• Go home.
“My rule of life prescribed as an
absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and
also the drinking of alcohol before, after
and if need be during all meals and in
the intervals between them.”

~Winston Churchill
No! No! No!
Not before class.
 Not in a glass.
Drinking Alcohol
Drinking alcohol before or during class
will not be tolerated. Everyone knows
when you are drinking. If they don’t
know, it’s even worse: in this case, you
are considered rude and disrespectful by
nature and not by circumstances.
Surfing the Internet is prohibited.
Checking Facebook and/or email
   should occur infrequently.
Never use the class as a study hall.

• Never have a book for another class open on
your desk. I will notice the book and see it as
  an act of disrespect.
• Typing of any sort that is not part of a class
activity is not acceptable behavio[u]r. It’s
  disrespectful and distracting.
This is a study hall!
This is a class!
Participate!
• Respond to questions
• Ask thoughtful questions
• Respond sensitively to other students
• Respect everyone’s right to be heard
• Listen attentively
• Never dominate the conversation
• Complete all in-class writing assignments
Believe whatever you want to believe.
           No judgments.
Never show weakness of spirit or
 complain of fatigue or illness.
Show joy!
On the other hand, if you are truly
tired, take a nap during class.
I will not wake you up.

It is a common rule with primitive
people not to waken a sleeper, because
his soul is away and might not have
time to get back.

~James George Frazer
POLITE
P atiently raising our hands,
O utstandingly respectful,
L istening carefully,
I n our seats we will stay,
T rying our best everyday,
E ach of us being "POLITE"
Always be respectful.
Rudeness is never appropriate or acceptable.
To earn respect you must first show respect
for others.
"Manners are the happy ways of doing
things; each one a stroke …of love, now
repeated …. life is washed, and its details
[now] adorned."

~Ralph Waldo Emerson
How life will be if we follow the Rules.
Expect to lose points if you break The Rules.
