The Role of Tobacco Cessation and Prevention to Combat COVID-19 Morbidity and Mortality in Rural Areas 1. Project Title: The Role of Tobacco Cessation and Prevention to Combat COVID-19 Morbidity and Mortality in Rural Areas 2. Problem Statement a) Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has reached pandemic proportions with a large global footprint. In December 2019, COVID-19 was first reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. On 28 January 2020, the National Health Commission of People’s Republic of China released national strategies for assisting prevention efforts for rural areas and the older adult population. Nevertheless, this outbreak was not contained, and as of 04 April 2020, it has spread to 181 countries resulting in about 1,160,000 cases and 62,400 deaths worldwide. To date, a total of 290,600 cases and 7,830 deaths have been reported in the United States (U.S.), with numbers climbing disproportionately on a day-to-day basis. New epidemiologic and clinical evidence is constantly evolving related to this infection while the pandemic is hastily progressing worldwide. Rapid efforts are needed to protect vulnerable populations including those living in rural areas. For example, before this pandemic, U.S. urban hospitals were over twice as likely to have growth in number of adult intensive care unit (ICU) beds available over a one-year period when compared to rural hospitals. Thus, rural hospitals are not as likely to have the higher level of resources and medical care needed for this crisis. Preventive and resource allocation strategies (e.g., ventilator availability) are needed to reach and care for b) What is its objective or goal? This proposal will fill the current research-to-practice gap, by examining the role of tobacco cessation in combating COVID-19 morbidity and mortality in rural areas. 3. Project Questions a) Hypothesis, focusing areas or problems We hypothesized that smoking behavior may be associated with adverse progression of COVID-19. This is characterized by more severe symptoms and the need for higher level care (e.g., intensive care), which is already inadequate in rural areas. b) What do you expect to learn? We assume that tobacco users living in U.S. rural areas may represent an additional subgroup at risk for higher COVID-19-related morbidity. Irrespective of COVID-19, individuals living in rural areas have high rates of tobacco use and related morbidity compared to individuals living in urban or metropolitan areas due to several factors including: low income, low educational attainment, higher social acceptability to tobacco use, permissive tobacco control policies, and lack of healthcare access. 4. Approach for the Project a) Methodology A secondary data analysis will be completed to ascertain the Role of Tobacco Cessation and Prevention in combating COVID-19 Morbidity and Mortality in Rural Areas. The focus of this discourse is to construct an understanding of cultural beliefs and practices on the
influence and spread of corona virus as viewed from lenses of medical sociology. This review starts from the
premise that we need a sociology of health agenda to manage the corona virus epidemic. The study points to the
fact that cultural beliefs are an unsung aspect in our understanding of the sociology of health particularly in the
management of corona virus despite the role of describing social behavior in other disciplines, including utilization
of medicine itself. Some cultural fanatics among the Bakiga hold several casual beliefs that Corona Virus is a
disease of the West (most developed countries) and therefore, Africans are an exception. Another competing belief
is that most Africans have endured harsh conditions which made them develop immunity against the virus.
Another argument is that Africans have been infected by flu and common cold and therefore, their body has
requisite immunity to fight COVID 19.Culture in health interventions seems to have three domains of health
beliefs and behavior that should be taken into account: (1) Cultural Identity, (2) Relationships and Expectations,
and (3) Cultural Empowerment. It is essential to maximize the wealth of experience that emerges both from
anthropological and sociological analysis of epidemic responses in different contexts for similar airborne diseases,
including historical analyses. Although the socio-cultural practices of the Bakiga highlighted in this work have
been shown to contribute to the spread of COVID 19, any future efforts to eradicate and/or contain these
outbreaks should also include the medical sociologist on the African continent as the dearth of them was the main

The focus of this discourse is to construct an understanding of cultural beliefs and practices on the
influence and spread of corona virus as viewed from lenses of medical sociology. This review starts from the
premise that we need a sociology of health agenda to manage the corona virus epidemic. The study points to the
fact that cultural beliefs are an unsung aspect in our understanding of the sociology of health particularly in the
management of corona virus despite the role of describing social behavior in other disciplines, including utilization
of medicine itself. Some cultural fanatics among the Bakiga hold several casual beliefs that Corona Virus is a
disease of the West (most developed countries) and therefore, Africans are an exception. Another competing belief
is that most Africans have endured harsh conditions which made them develop immunity against the virus.
Another argument is that Africans have been infected by flu and common cold and therefore, their body has
requisite immunity to fight COVID 19.Culture in health interventions seems to have three domains of health
beliefs and behavior that should be taken into account: (1) Cultural Identity, (2) Relationships and Expectations,
and (3) Cultural Empowerment. It is essential to maximize the wealth of experience that emerges both from
anthropological and sociological analysis of epidemic responses in different contexts for similar airborne diseases,
including historical analyses. Although the socio-cultural practices of the Bakiga highlighted in this work have
been shown to contribute to the spread of COVID 19, any future efforts to eradicate and/or contain these
outbreaks should also include the medical sociologist on the African continent as the dearth of them was the main

and develop a “solid understanding” (Guest, Bunce & Johnson, 2006, p. 77) of the phenomenon of the childcare experience in this community. The saturation goal means that the sample process is emergent and may change as the data become available.
As you can see in the ongoing scenario, before venturing out into the field, researchers must consider how they will manage credibility of the data. As a qualitative researcher, you too will have to address the sources of data as well as your credibility.
For this week, you will examine research questions, explore qualitative research design, and consider purposeful sampling and saturation as a qualitative researcher.
The answer lies in how clearly you articulate the criteria for selecting data sources; (b) your ability to purposefully select cases; and (c) the extent to which those cases are “information-rich… for in-depth study” (Patton, 2015, p. 264) with respect to the purpose of the study.
As you prepare for this week’s Discussion, consider turning your attention to the variety of purposeful sampling strategies you may consider in developing your research plan. Also consider that qualitative researchers seek a threshold or cut-off point for when to stop collecting data. There is no

Online brand communities are based on their core value - the brand - and grow by building relationships with and among members interested in the brand (Jang et al. 2008). The MAN steps forward, removes his coat. He’s tall. Late

Problem Statement a) Background The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has reached pandemic proportions with a large global footprint. In December 2019, COVID-19 was first reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. On 28 January 2020, the National Health Commission of People’s Republic of China released national strategies for assisting prevention efforts for rural areas and the older adult population. Nevertheless, this outbreak was not contained, and as of 04 April 2020, it has spread to 181 countries resulting in about 1,160,000 cases and 62,400 deaths worldwide. To date, a total of 290,600 cases and 7,830 deaths have been reported in the United States (U.S.), with numbers climbing disproportionately on a day-to-day basis. New epidemiologic and clinical evidence is constantly evolving related to this infection while the pandemic is hastily progressing worldwide. Rapid efforts are needed to protect vulnerable populations including those living in rural areas. For example, before this pandemic, U.S. urban hospitals were over twice as likely to have growth in number of adult intensive care unit (ICU) beds available over a one-year period when compared to rural
- 2. hospitals. Thus, rural hospitals are not as likely to have the higher level of resources and medical care needed for this crisis. Preventive and resource allocation strategies (e.g., ventilator availability) are needed to reach and care for b) What is its objective or goal? This proposal will fill the current research-to-practice gap, by examining the role of tobacco cessation in combating COVID- 19 morbidity and mortality in rural areas. 3. Project Questions a) Hypothesis, focusing areas or problems We hypothesized that smoking behavior may be associated with adverse progression of COVID-19. This is characterized by more severe symptoms and the need for higher level care (e.g., intensive care), which is already inadequate in rural areas. b) What do you expect to learn? We assume that tobacco users living in U.S. rural areas may represent an additional subgroup at risk for higher COVID-19- related morbidity. Irrespective of COVID-19, individuals living in rural areas have high rates of tobacco use and related morbidity compared to individuals living in urban or metropolitan areas due to several factors including: low income, low educational attainment, higher social acceptability to tobacco use, permissive tobacco control policies, and lack of healthcare access. 4. Approach for the Project a) Methodology
