As our society becomes increasingly more intertwined, it is evident that global trends that once seemed remote are having a deep impact on our local communities. These same trends play out in museums around the globe as we reflect our communities both past and present. The museum audience is inherently submerged in this current of cultural change. Without pretending to predict the entire future, there are strong signals that a few important global trends will persist. What are those trends and how can museums begin to take advantage of those likely shifts to promote, advocate, and enhance their relevance to a global audience?

The following is the powerpoint from Barry Joseph's keynote at the SLEDcc 2008 Second Life educator's convention. Barry write that: "In it I introduce a term I have coined, "the ludic life," and discuss its implications for Second Life and learning. In short, Eric Zimmerman, the game designer, has recently been making the argument that we have entered "a ludic century." We once moved from an industrial age to an information age. However, we are now interacting with that information in a way Zimmerman finds best described as ludic, which is not to say everything is becoming a game but rather game/play dynamics, aesthetics and sensibilities will increasingly define our social interactions.
"While Zimmerman uses Wikipedia as his example, I am looking to articulate that Second Life is a better example and, more importantly, the way in which SL allows users to combine their real life identities and practices within a ludic context not only makes it a powerful space for teaching people how to live a ludic life, but it also becomes the key defining characteristic of the Second Life experience. The ramifications are tremendous and will be explored, both at the keynote and within this group."

In 2013, the Institute of Customer Experience designed a board game called “Trip to the Future” which was used to conduct “playshops” for children to get insights into how children’s minds work in visualizing the future.
Three years later, at Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2016 held in Mumbai, we had an opportunity to conduct two similar playshops—one for an NGO called Akanksha and the second for the KGAF 2016 festival children.
The responses we received were intriguing and actually point to current trends in 2016, indicating the directions in which technology will evolve in the future.
Response-Trend that emerged:
1. Practical space exploration
2. Beneficial intelligence
3. Maker movement (3D printing)
4. Space-saving automated tech
5. Cognitive Internet of Things
6. Immersive screen display
7. Augmented knowledge (and immortality)
Over the years, the use of video games in school systems have been adopted and documented in modern education. Research is now readily available for educators to explore the advantages that video games can bring into the classroom. While research on the positive effects of learning with video games in education is well-known, it is important to review just how quickly academic thinking has evolved over the past two decades. Today, the question on many educators' minds is not video games value for education, but it’s validity as a varsity-level sport. Many wonder how video gaming culture is affecting students in school today. How will thinking change as esports become integrated into the education system?
The first-ever academic and peer-reviewed journal dedicated to computer game studies was first published in 2001, by Espen Aarseth. At the time, Aarseth was the Associate Professor in Humanistic Informatics at the University of Bergen. The journal she creatively named “Computer Game Studies” is still active today and available at gamestudies.org. In issue 1 of volume 1, Aarseth proclaims that video games are, “of greater cultural importance than, say, movies, or perhaps even sports.” In 2001, online video gaming was just starting to become a reality and competitive esports were known only to small groups of informed gamers. @thoughtben + @cawston
Games have become a common feature in cultural spaces as museums and galleries seek new ways to engage audiences with both their collections and the spaces that house them. Organisations have embraced play in all its forms, from gamification (boo! hiss!) through to immersive experiences and screen-based games that even die-hard gamers can enjoy.
But how do you condense the theme of an exhibition, or the deep expertise of curators, into a single, simple game? What ideas work best in game-form? And how can museums compose project briefs that get the most creative responses from game designers?
With a focus on a suite of games being created for two new galleries at National Museum of Scotland – and examples of brilliant game products from across the sector – Rob and Ben will explore the best way to approach the game-making process and maximise the impact of the final product.

9. TWO QUESTIONS HERE:
- HOW BIG IS THE “CREATIVE ECONOMY”?
- HOW IMPORTANT IS CREATIVITY TO AN
ECONOMY?
Thursday, 17 October 13
10. HOW BIG IS THE “CREATIVE
ECONOMY”?
NESTA report, April 2013
In the UK: It provides jobs for 2.5 million
people – more than in financial services,
advanced manufacturing or construction
This creative workforce grew four times
faster than the workforce as a whole in
the six years to 2010
And proved more resilient when the
wider labour market dipped violently in
2009.
Thursday, 17 October 13
“comprising creative industries in sectors
ranging from the Performing and Visual
Arts to Advertising and Software, as well
as creative professionals working
elsewhere in the economy”
11. HOW IMPORTANT IS CREATIVITY TO AN ECONOMY?
Tyler Cowen, Average is Over (2013)
“If you and your skills are a complement to the computer,
your wage and labor market prospects are likely to be
cheery. If your skills do not complement the computer, you
may want to address that mismatch. Ever more people
are starting to fall on one side of the divide or the other.
That's why average is over.”

15. Takeaways in terms of play/creativity/
economy/society...
Play is not just an indicator of wellbeing but well-becoming. How deeply rooted in
human nature is the joy of curiosity?
“Playful play” is light-hearted, freely
chosen, exploratory, messy, open to
others
Creativity draws from playful play - but
innovation is different - that’s about
applying options, not generating them
We have a public need to establish the
enabling conditions of play and creativity

16. BUILDING “GROUNDS OF PLAY” IN EDUCATION,
PUBLIC SPACE, ORGANIZATIONS, POLICY
Thursday, 17 October 13
17. Maintaining and increasing investment in early
years education vital to sustaining “grounds of play”
Pasi Sahlberg, Finnish Lessons - longer
kindergarten/play learning, and then more selfdirected learning in formal school, one of bases of
world-beating OECD educational scores (wellpaid &
superqualified teachers the other!)
Thursday, 17 October 13
18. Aldo van Eyck’s post-war Amsterdam playgrounds
Plan for play
- Resist the mall!
- When procuring/planning public spaces/amenities, think of
the vital need for open, well-furnished space
- Not just for child’s play, but to provide autonomy and headspace for adults too.
- Think “real utopia” of policies: shorter working week, full
childcare, citizen’s income (Robert Skidelsky, NEF, B.I.)
Thursday, 17 October 13
19. Stay festive!
- A way for adults to stay playful & creative is to keep
thinking about the future of what they’re doing, and then
discuss that with others, at events and through networks
- Forecasting and futurology as the grown-up version of
“let’s pretend”...

20. PLAYING IN A COLD CLIMATE
Thursday, 17 October 13
21. Roy Foster,
“Macmansions,
Cellars and
Garrets: surveying
the new Ireland”,
Open Democracy,
6 August 2013
“The answers are not coming from the politicians, or from any other
sector of the shell-shocked Irish establishment. It seems likely that the
questions will be raised, and responses floated, from elsewhere, from
what Yeats called 'the cellars and garrets', where artists and
social radicals mingle on the margins of respectable life. Whether
the evident anger that fuels them will be transmuted into the
mainstream of Irish life, or find its own outlet, remains to be seen.”
