Open source software helps us achieve our vision: "Engage enthusiastically": real-world, engaging, authentic learning in the classroom  using technologies students are comfortable with   "In a caring and challenging learning community": network; connect; collaborate make wise choices   "Contribute to the world": a wide range of creative opportunities/tools give something back
What is Open Source Software? Community-developed software that is made available to anyone in the world, free of charge. 'User as developer' Harnesses collective intelligence for the benefit of humankind  Decreases barriers to access
What is open source software  like ? It's like: free public schools vs. pay-as-you go education free public libraries vs. bookstores Wikipedia vs. Britannica saved seeds vs. terminator technology
Why do people use OSS? Cost: "Pay people, not licences." Commitment to openness and community  Stability Sustainability Security Intuitive design Flexibility/modularity Good for the soul

Ubuntu "Ubuntu" is an African word that defies translation.    Archbishop Desmond Tutu: " A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good" Ubuntu is also:  a computer operating system an alternative to Windows XP, Vista, or  Apple's OS X the operating system installed on our computers  
What does Ubuntu look like? Just like any other operating system.  It's most similar to Windows XP.
