The document discusses biodiversity, economic, and development issues in Mongolia. It notes that Mongolia has the largest intact temperate grasslands which are habitat for gazelles and other wildlife. The economy relies heavily on animal husbandry by nomadic herders, though overgrazing is an issue. Recent economic growth from mining and infrastructure projects risks further development pressures on these grasslands and wetlands important for migratory birds.

AN OVERVIEW OF INDIA’S MINING SECTOR
WHAT IS THE MINERAL LAWS (AMENDMENT) BILL, 2020?
DURING A LOCK DOWN, WHY IS THE MINING INDUSTRY CONSIDERED 'ESSENTIAL'?
POST AUCTION STRATEGIES IN MINERAL SECTOR
Under the new mineral policy, the federal and provincial governments have agreed to provide for appropriate institutional arrangements, a modern regulatory framework and a programme to expand geological database.
Oil and gas resources present enormous opportunities for the economic development of low income economies, but poor management of these resources can result in dire consequences for the foundations of the resource-endowed nation. The discovery of oil and gas in Ghana is as significant as the policies and measures to ensure optimum benefits to the nation. This paper evaluates the sustainability of petroleum production in the light of the medium term policy structure, the Ghana Shared Growth and Development Agenda (GSGDA). In particular, the economic contribution of oil and gas to Ghana’s GDP and sustainable investment options for petroleum revenues were examined using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression. The evidence suggests that at current production levels, petroleum is not a significant contributor to Ghana’s GDP after adjusting for the contribution from other sectors of the economy. The consistent appreciation of Ghana’s real effective exchange rate between 2010 and 2013 led to a deterioration of the competitiveness of the non-oil sector and declining contribution of the agricultural sector to GDP; and further eroded the net impact of petroleum production. Investing petroleum proceeds in the non-oil sector and expansion of the export base are a viable option for utilising petroleum revenues.

River restoration and recreation partnerships - Chip Norton, Kim Schonekrshimoda2014
Norton, Chip - Friends of the Verde River Greenway, Board President; Kimberly Schonek, The Nature Conservancy, Verde River Projects Manager
Located on private land in the heart of Camp Verde, Arizona, an irrigation diversion on the Verde River creates terra incognita. This diversion dam and the riparian flood zone located immediately downstream from the dam are seldom visited - even by landowners. Recreational boaters tend to avoid this stretch of river, which is otherwise attractive. The dam is an absolute barrier to native fish passage most of the year. Woody and herbaceous invasive plant species are common in this altered riparian area.
In the Verde Valley, Friends of the Verde River Greenway (FVRG) and The Nature Conservancy (TNC) have teamed up with local, state and federal partners to take on this challenge. Together, they are working to transform terra incognita into a community asset that will provide reliable irrigation water and recreational opportunities, as well as improve river flow and fish and wildlife habitat
Both FVRG and TNC are also engaged in watershed-scale programs that provide the context for successful local projects. FVRG leads the Verde Watershed Restoration Coalition, a river restoration collaborative and co-convenes the Verde Front, a sustainable recreation collaborative. TNC has developed strong partnerships with surface water users to improve irrigation efficiencies that enhance river flow.
Finally, multi-state partnerships and strategies provide an even broader context for successful restoration projects. TNC’s Colorado River basin strategies guide their Verde River programs and projects. FVRG partners with restoration practitioners in other states through Cross-Watershed Network, and is currently facilitating a cross-watershed visit to Grand Valley, Colorado, from Verde Valley, Arizona, regarding sustainable river recreation.

Welcome to the new Mizzima Weekly !
Mizzima Media Group is pleased to announce the relaunch of Mizzima Weekly. Mizzima is dedicated to helping our readers and viewers keep up to date on the latest developments in Myanmar and related to Myanmar by offering analysis and insight into the subjects that matter. Our websites and our social media channels provide readers and viewers with up-to-the-minute and up-to-date news, which we don’t necessarily need to replicate in our Mizzima Weekly magazine. But where we see a gap is in providing more analysis, insight and in-depth coverage of Myanmar, that is of particular interest to a range of readers.

role of women and girls in various terror groupssadiakorobi2
Women have three distinct types of involvement: direct involvement in terrorist acts; enabling of others to commit such acts; and facilitating the disengagement of others from violent or extremist groups.
In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

We conducted an ecoregional assessment for the Eastern Steppe and here’s a preliminary conservation portfolio (in dark green). This work, which started in Sept 2009, is being conducted under an MOU with the Ministry of Environment and being driven by a working group that includes Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy, other gov’t agencies, regional and local stakeholders, academics, and NGOs.
We looked at this through the lens of future development and make recommendations about which overlap/conflicts need to be avoided and which we can re-design the portfolio and offset those impacts

But when viewed with the potential cumulative impacts for the region, we think an approach like DbyD will be needed to guide effective landscape planning and mitigation decisions. (Map shows leases across Mongolia)
