Trochetia boutoniana is the national flower of Mauritius, where it is endemic. It is a shrub named after French botanist Louis Bouton that occurs naturally on the slopes of Le Morne Brabant mountain. Along with being illustrated frequently on Mauritian stamps, it was officially declared the national flower in 1992. There are several other species of Trochetia found in Mauritius and Réunion, including T. parviflora which was rediscovered after being thought extinct, and T. granulata which is unique to Réunion.
