Difference in Music Video
By Alex Fraser
Many artist, such as R&B/pop princess Beyonce create videos that
link to the lyrics and tempo of their music. Beyonce often has varied
songs such as soft ballads as well as songs with upbeat tempo
songs. The difference in style of music will correlate in the video
that the musician creates and will be inspired by different things.
this can also be seen from their digitals and advert.
Style of Music Video
At the start of the ‘1+1’ video, Beyonce is what seems as
nude with body glitter, little make up and damp hair. This
convey to the audience the delicate and raw side to the
artist and links the emotion of the lyrics to the soft visuals.
The artist changes angles as well as the camera angles
changing constantly, from close up, medium close up
and big close up. The artist is front of a plain black
background which draws all attention to the artist.
With the lyrics ‘make love to me’, the music video uses lots of
colour such as reds and and pinks which often connote sexuality.
These colours often relate to love and intimate passion such as
sex. Pink is often linked to showing tenderness and kindness with
its empathy and sensitivity. With these evocative lyrics, the slow
moving visuals means the colours link to the lyrics sung.
Throughout, the audience see visuals which were the same as played
the start. These frames with the same background and little make up
are constantly embedded throughout the video. Beyonce often has
powerful videos, yet the slow tempo ballad means she can show
another side of herself to her large following. In the middle of the
video there is an extreme close up where she cries. This shows the
emotion in the song and another portrayal of the R&B/pop star that
fans don't normally see.
At the ending of the video, where
it is only instrumental music, the
audience get slow visuals of the
sexual nature of the song. The
audience gets to see sensual
dance and movement of
materials, as well as Beyonce
moving and touching a a
masculine body.
The video then ends of a close
up Beyonce face in the same
setting, location and costume
from the beginning of the music
video.
At the beginning of the music video ‘Run the world’ there
are several moving shots all in different reactions with no
audio. This diegetic sound sets the scene sets the scene
and shows the abandoned location. The fire and wheel
spinning suggest a war or conflict
The opening of the the song, just before the music starts
the artist lifts up her head. This is very striking as it suggest
that a women had caused this destruction. This close up
then cuts to a mid shot with other girls in the background.
This is coneys the idea of women sticking together and
being united as one.
Later on in the video the audience see a frame of the artist
against several men. This may be intimidating to many
women, but the strong pose of artist with her hands on her
hips is very empowering and links to the lyrics of girls ‘run
the world’ and reinforces the idea that women can take on
anything that men can.
There are very strong
shots within the set and
costume. The group of
girls against men
connotes the strong
women and taking on any
challenge. The movement
and standing of women
together shows the
scared reaction of men
who are arguably
physically stronger.
As you can see from the previous slide, in Beyonce’s
‘Rule the world’ music video there are 7 outfit changes.
This shows the how in an upbeat pop song that the pace
of song means there is constant change of location and
costume. As the lyrics are ‘Who run the world (girls)’ the
visuals, costumes and movements/ poses are very strong
in the video to emphasises the power of women. The
juxtaposition of Beyonce in a gown as well as holding two
hyenas, especially as are seen as aggressive animals
shows the sex appeal of a women in a dress and fierce
attitude. This reinforces that women are not sacred of life
nor to hold wild animals, which contrast they typical
stereotype of women being weak and timid.
Later on in the video you see men and women charge at
each other and connotes to the idea of war between
females and males, this conveys a clear narrative story
for the video. In sync dance of women shows the united
front and reinstalls the idea of female empowerment.
At the end of the music video you see the artist rip off the
badge of the male. This is the idea that women have won the
battle and that men no longer ‘run the world’. This happens
after the music has finished and is very effective and is a very
strong message to the end of the music video.
Overall this shows the difference between two different styles
of music in the pop genre and the complete contrast of music
videos. In the ballad, it had soft colours used, slower
movements and more of a sexual and personal element to
the artist. This contrast to Beyonce’s upbeat song where
there is a constant change of visuals, locations and
costumes. The upbeat song has more of a song,
empowering narrative and performance element, full of
dance and movement which isn't in Beyonce’s 1+1 ballad.
