streamlining the admission process
were big challenges. But since the
School of Engineering had all these
things in place before the pandemic,
there were no critical issues. However,
the students at remote places are
having the connectivity issue and
hence related issues for conducting
examination is a challenge. Lot of
students are not having laptops, so they
are attending the classes on their
mobile phones.
Today the main challenges the institute
is facing are - to train the manpower in
skill domain, value-added certification,
corporate grooming sessions and
providing the right talent to the fullest
level of satisfaction as per the demands
of the industry.

20. n today's rapidly evolving world, engineering
Ieducation faces a crucial challenge: the gap between
what is taught in academic institutions and the skills
demanded by industries. This divide not only hampers the
employability of graduates but also obstructs innovation
and growth in various sectors. Bridging this gap is essential
for ensuring that engineering graduates are adequately
prepared to meet the dynamic needs of the workforce.
Bridging
the Industry-Academia
Gap in
Education
18 | March 2024
22. Understanding the Industry-
Academia Gap
The industry-academia gap in
engineering education arises due to
several factors. One primary reason is
the discrepancy between theoretical
knowledge imparted in academic
curricula and practical skills required
in the industry. While academic
programs focus on fundamental
concepts and theoretical frameworks,
industries demand hands-on experience
and proficiency in specific technologies
and tools.
Furthermore, the pace of technological
advancements often outstrips the
ability of academic institutions to
update their curricula accordingly. As a
result, graduates may lack familiarity
with the latest industry trends,
software, and methodologies, making
them less competitive in the job
market.
Additionally, there exists a
communication barrier between
academia and industry. While
academic institutions may lack insights
into the current industry demands,
industries may not effectively
communicate their expectations from
prospective employees to educational
institutions. This lack of alignment
leads to a mismatch between the skills
possessed by graduates and the
requirements of employers.
Strategies for Bridging the Gap
Addressing the industry-academia gap
requires concerted efforts from both
educational institutions and industries.
Here are some strategies that can be
implemented to enhance the
employability of engineering
graduates:
Industry-Academia Collaboration:
Establishing partnerships between
academic institutions and industries is
crucial for bridging the gap.
Collaborative initiatives such as joint
research projects, internships, and
guest lectures by industry experts can
provide students with practical
exposure and insights into real-world
challenges. These collaborations also
enable academic institutions to tailor
their curricula according to industry
needs, ensuring that graduates are
better prepared for the workforce.
Updated Curricula: Academic
institutions must regularly update their
curricula to reflect the latest industry
trends and technological
advancements. Integration of industry-
relevant courses, practical training
modules, and hands-on projects can
help students develop the skills
demanded by employers. Additionally,
incorporating interdisciplinary subjects
such as data science, artificial
intelligence, and sustainable
engineering prepares graduates for
emerging job roles in diverse sectors.
Experiential Learning: Adopting
experiential learning approaches such
as project-based learning, internships,
and co-op programs can significantly
enhance students' employability. These
hands-on experiences provide students
with the opportunity to apply
theoretical knowledge in real-world
scenarios, develop problem-solving
skills, and gain valuable industry
exposure. Moreover, engaging students
in industry-sponsored projects fosters
collaboration, teamwork, and
innovation.
Industry-Driven Certification
Programs: Collaborating with industry
bodies to offer certification programs
in specialized areas can enhance
students' credentials and employability.
These programs provide students with
industry-recognized certifications and
practical training, making them more
attractive to potential employers.
Moreover, industry-driven
certifications validate students'
proficiency in specific technologies or
domains, bridging the gap between
academic learning and industry
requirements.
Continuous Learning and Upskilling:
Engineering graduates must recognize
the importance of lifelong learning and
upskilling to remain competitive in the
job market. Academic institutions
should promote a culture of continuous
learning by offering professional
development courses, online learning
resources, and networking
opportunities. Encouraging students to
pursue certifications, attend
workshops, and engage in industry
events facilitates their professional
growth and adaptability to evolving
industry trends.
Conclusion
Bridging the industry-academia gap in
engineering education is crucial for
enhancing the employability of
graduates and fostering innovation and
growth in various sectors. By fostering
collaboration between academic
institutions and industries, updating
curricula to reflect industry needs,
promoting experiential learning,
developing soft skills, offering
industry-driven certification programs,
and encouraging continuous learning,
Engineering institutes can effectively
address this gap and prepare
engineering graduates for successful
careers in the dynamic global
workforce. Only through concerted
efforts and partnerships between
academia and industry, it becomes
possible to ensure that engineering
education remains relevant, responsive,
and transformative in the face of
evolving technological landscapes.

The Story of Success
An exceptional philanthropist, Shri. Shankarrao Genuji
Kolhe devoted his life to industrialization and education to
enhance rural communities' economic and social standing.
Born into a farming family on March 24, 1929, in the small
village of Yesgaon, Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra,
India, he became a symbol of advancement and change.
He was following his graduation in 1950 with a Bachelor of
Science in Agriculture from the University of Pune, Shri.
Shankarrao used a Ford Foundation scholarship to continue
his education in the USA and Europe. He decided to pursue
a career in farming even though there were lucrative job
opportunities overseas. He conducted in-depth research on
sugarcane crops and brought technological advancements to
farms.
His dedication was shown in various endeavors, such as the
manufacturing of chemicals, cooperative milk unions such
as Godavari Khore Dudh Utpadak Sangh, and other
businesses, forums, and cooperatives promoting rural
development.
Understanding the value of education, Shri. Shankarrao
established the Sanjivani Rural Education Society in 1983
and oversaw the expansion of 12 institutions providing
preschool through Ph.D. education. With more than 15,000
students and 2,000 employees, society has become a center
for education and growth.
Aaryabhushan, Jeevan Sadhana, Girna Gaurav, Adarsh
Rayat Sevak, Shivajirao Nagvade Addrash Sahakar, Sahkar
Ratna, and Jeevan Gourav are just a few of the
distinguished honors he has received in recognition of his
exceptional work at the state and federal levels.
