MOOCs, or Massive Open Online Courses, are online courses aimed at unlimited participation and open access via the web. They provide free course content without charge to a large number of people. The first MOOC was developed in 2008 by Stephen Downes and George Siemens and attracted 25 students on campus and over 2,300 online participants. In 2011, courses from Stanford University attracted over 160,000 students from around the world, with over 20,000 completing one course on artificial intelligence. MOOCs allow informal learning at a distance for free but can be problematic for those lacking computer skills or prone to misuse the freedom.
