Reports described mentally ill individuals attacking others for small or no reasons, and attempting or threatening suicide, which led to their hospitalization for treatment. A few mentally ill people committed murder before receiving treatment and were imprisoned, including some notorious serial killers who exhibited conditions like necrophilia, multiple personality disorder, psychopathy, and psychosis.

A single man of 40 years of age named Ted cut his carotid artery at home. He had suffered from chronic schizophrenia, dominated by paranoid symptoms, for 20 years. During his illness, Ted had spent a total of 12 years in mental hospitals; individual hospitalizations had varied in duration. While he was hospitalized, his bizarre delusions of altered body states and his experiences of being controlled by external, often invisible, agents rapidly disappeared. He had death wishes and suicidal thoughts since the onset of his schizophrenia. Death wishes also stopped soon after hospitalization.
Over the years, opinion about Ted changed and his condition began to be regarded as hopeless. He was difficult to treat; he accused personnel, was unreliable, acted pretentiously, and reacted by acting out. Four years before committing suicide, he had to be transferred to another mental hospital. Two years before his death, he was transferred to a halfway house belonging to the hospital, because the staff feared that his dependence on the hospital might become excessive. After his transfer to outpatient care, his suicidal tendencies increased. Six months before committing suicide, he lost his long-term nurse. Subsequent treatment consisted of occasional office visits with a psychologist or psychiatrist.
Just before committing suicide, Ted tried to enter the hospital where he had been during the initial phases of his illness. He had suffered increasingly for a few months from paranoid fears of being murdered. He threatened to commit suicide unless he was admitted to the hospital, but the threat was considered demonstrative and hospitalization was brief.
The day before he committed suicide, he visited his childhood home and became afraid that a group of men had surrounded the house. He repeated his wish to enter a mental hospital. During his final night, his state changed. According to his father, the Ted was exceptionally calm on the day of his death. The father said, "He no longer seemed afraid of anything."

On the night of February 19, 1998, Sarah Danlin was in a bar celebrating Mardi Gras with friends. A man began flirting with her eventually luring her away from her friends to an empty room where he and a friend raped her. When Sarah reported the crime to detectives LaMontagne Sr. and J.R. Smith, the detectives disagreed on the credibility of the victim’s statement. Shill, S (2007) Smith believed that the young Sarah was being deceptive due to the fact that it was Mardi Gras and she has many beads around her neck. Smith even said, “she was asking for trouble”. Smith was protecting a rapist because he knew one of the victim and was led to believe he was a “good kid”.
Following the rape, Sarah dropped out of medical school and became obsessed with Jack the Ripper, a famous serial killer. Targeting men, she would lure them away from the crowds by seducing them with promises of sex. Once alone with the victim, the suspect would slash their throats sometimes eviscerating them as well as taking items from her victims. Sarah also sent letters to the detectives with the heading, “Yours Truly). “ Shill, S (2007) Sarah was believed to be organized, calculating, and had maybe previously stalked the victim before the murder. She may have identified with Jack the Ripper because she believed she had lost her own identity issues either by one traumatic event or over the course of her childhood life. Sarah Danlin became a misandrist serial killer because of the rape that was ignored and destroyed her life.

An individual’s personality is influenced by experiences, environment (surroundings, life situations) and inherited characteristics. A person’s personality typically stays the same over time. A personality disorder is a way of thinking, feeling and behaving that deviates from the expectations of the culture, causes distress or problems functioning, and lasts over time.

Analysis of Dennis Rader BTK
Dennis Rader, known as the BTK serial killer, murdered at least 10 victims in Kansas between 1974-1991. As a child, he engaged in animal cruelty and developed fantasies of bondage, control, and torture. He appeared outwardly normal as an adult, marrying and working stable jobs, but secretly struggled with sadistic sexual fantasies. He derived pleasure from strangling and asphyxiating women, taking souvenirs and photos to relive the experiences. After 30 years of investigations, Rader was only caught when he began contacting police to seek recognition for his crimes. He was classified as a lust killer who killed for power and control and displayed psychopathic and narcissistic traits common in serial killers
Psychopathy v. Sociopathy- Whats the difference?
Psychopathy and sociopathy are often used interchangeably but there are key differences. Psychopathy is considered biological in nature while sociopathy is caused by environmental factors like upbringing. Psychopaths tend to be well-educated and able to mask their disorder, while sociopaths are more erratic and impulsive. Ted Bundy is presented as a classic psychopath due to his controlled and calculated behavior, while Jack the Ripper is seen as a sociopath given his spontaneous and rash criminal acts.
