A briefing into the media based upon personal views and understanding. I hope the messages and values presented in this PowerPoint are acceptable and understood by all age groups.
The document discusses the target audiences for a film. The primary audience is identified as teenagers and young adults, while the secondary audience is identified as males ages 25-35. Another section discusses a horror film called "IT" and notes its primary audience is teenagers due to its 15 rating, while its secondary audience is adults and possibly middle-aged viewers.
This document presents a research proposal for identifying rumors on Twitter. It first defines rumors as unverified information statements circulating in contexts of ambiguity or threat that help people make sense of situations and manage risk. The proposal then discusses identifying rumors based on their context, function, and content. It suggests detecting sudden increases in word frequencies and mapping word connections to identify rumor-related terms. A rumor annotation scheme is proposed that considers context, function, content and ambiguity levels. Tweets would be categorized as speculation, controversy, misinformation or disinformation using chosen measures. The goal is to better understand rumor spreading online and provide context to interpretations.
The document discusses how a news story about a terrorist threat in Europe would satisfy several of Galtung and Ruge's news values. It would have a high threshold as it affects many people. The frequency is constant after the Paris attacks. It has negativity as terrorist threats are exciting bad news. There is also cultural proximity as discussions involve influential nations like France and England. Continuity applies as terrorism remains an ongoing story that news teams are prepared to cover. The soft news story could also satisfy the values of simplicity, exclusivity, recency, and size.
The document discusses different perspectives on defining and understanding the term "social realism" in film and art. There are many conflicting ideas about what constitutes social realism, and it is a difficult term to precisely define. Some key points made include that social realism emerged as a genre during the 19th century transition from rural to urban living, and new technologies like photography and film helped capture realistic depictions of life. However, different theorists disagree on whether films and media can ever truly represent reality in an unbiased way.
Attack the Block was released in 2011 and directed by Joe Cornish. It was shown in 352 UK screens in its opening weekend and received a BAFTA nomination. Its budget was £9 million but it only made £3.7 million at the box office. The film targets youth ages around 15, as suggested by its rating. Posters and trailers were used to promote the action/sci-fi/comedy thriller, showing the urban London setting and alien invasion plot. Social media sites like Facebook were also utilized to generate buzz around the film.
According to boxofficemojo.com, around 3/5 of horror films are released in October, most commonly towards the end of the month near Halloween. This is beneficial for institutions as more people are in a scary mindset during this time of year and are more likely to watch horror films, meaning higher profits. Younger people aged 15-24 are most likely to visit the cinema compared to older age groups. The average gross profit per horror film is $19.4 million, while the total gross profit of the genre from 1995-2014 was $7.8 billion, making it the 7th highest grossing genre. There are several sub-genres of horror including slasher, zombie, psychological, and science
This theory was developed by Hans-Robert Jauss in the 1980s and 1990s to show how audiences interpret media based on their individual circumstances. It suggests that interpretations are influenced by personal context. For example, some feminist interpretations of the film Thelma & Louise saw an alternative ending portrayed in the novella A Vampire's Kiss as more fitting. This theory is important because people's individuality and media interpretations have diversified over time.
The document provides an outline for a blog post on TV drama representations. It includes notes from clips shown on regional stereotypes, conventions of Coronation Street, and work done for Mr. Bland on gender. It also gives guidance on analyzing a TV drama clip for representations of gender, age, sexuality, ethnicity, class/status, ability/disability, or regional identity by examining camerawork, mise-en-scene, editing, and sound. Finally, it defines regional identity as referring to the part of the UK someone is from, either generally (north, south), by country (English, Scottish) or specific towns.

1. Early theories viewed media audiences as easily manipulated masses that could be persuaded through advertising or propaganda. However, others saw media as having less influence and working in more subtle ways.
2. Historically, media like photography, film, radio, and television allowed entertainment and art to reach vast audiences, unlike older forms restricted by space. This led to concepts of audiences as atomized masses receiving identical content anywhere.
3. However, these "mass audience" theories have been questioned, as media exposure often occurs alone rather than as true crowds, and experiences are sometimes shared with others not present. Individual experiences also vary rather than all being equally influenced.

This document discusses three postmodern texts - Gorillaz, The X-Factor, and The Only Way is Essex - and how they challenge conventions of traditional media. Regarding Gorillaz, it notes their eclectic music style mixes genres and that they use virtual band identities rather than showing the real band. For X-Factor, it discusses how the interactive audience voting challenges the passive audiences of modernism. It also notes X-Factor's hyperreal presentation of contestants. For TOWIE, it discusses how the show references stereotypes through its characters and blurs reality versus simulation. Overall, the document analyzes how these postmodern texts upend traditions of singular genres, passive audiences, authentic representation, and the real

This document contains information about audience profiles for three movies - My Little Pony The Movie, The Iron Giant, and Coco. It provides the primary and secondary audiences for each film based on factors like age, gender, and themes. It also discusses concepts like the hypodermic needle theory in media effects and uses and gratifications theory as it relates to seeking information, personal identity, social interaction, entertainment, and consumer generated content.
The document discusses three major media theories:
1) The Hypodermic Needle Theory proposed that media had a direct and powerful effect on passive audiences by "injecting" them with messages. It is now seen as too simplistic.
2) Reception Theory, developed by Stuart Hall, argues that meaning is constructed differently by each individual based on their own experiences and interpretations, rather than being inherent in the text.
3) Uses and Gratification Theory focuses on why people use media rather than media effects, proposing that audiences are active and use media selectively to fulfill personal needs like surveillance, identity, relationships, and diversion.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. I say the media is a filter because…
Everything in the media is almost a restriction/ like a cap. They want you to hear what they want
you to hear and they have the power to do that as the general public rely on any news for insight
on what is happening in the real world. The masses are unable to find any information by
themselves so we rely on a secondary source being the media. For example, if Rupert Murdock
does not particularly like a religious group, he will use the media to portray this group of people as
bad or even mute them from the media. We are blinded by subliminal messages,
Maybe the media being a filter can be a protection as the general public may be disturbed if they
knew how many murders happened a day for example. Media can either corrupt one’s mind or can
cause a world of curiosity.
Nick-named the tell-lie-vision, the elite individuals who control the media can manipulate the
masses through how many hours’ people spend using technology.
4. I say the media is a window because…
Although media is great, I refer media as a window because as
you look out of your window, you do not see the bigger picture.
You can only see, depending on where you are maybe a couple
of hundred metres into the distance. This compares to the
media as what we see on our screens is only what the media is
telling us, we don’t have another side of the story or a bird’s
eye view if it were. The view from our window (in reality) may
be quite beautiful depending on where you are. The media
may use this as an advantage like this illustration as people like
the UK may be more sound than over people in the ‘greater
picture’.
Who’s this? Do you underestimate my
power?

7. The Weeknd
The image created is that he is an important and dominant male. His posture, his hands in
his pockets represent how he has made it to the top. Abel’s head is positioned straight
and upright suggesting people look up to him as a role model.
His image is positive as he is a Black, Canadian artist being portrayed in a positive way.
This implies that although he is black, he does not allow his past life as well as the history
of the black culture down. There are many racist people about, this has no effect on him.
He is extremely smartly dressed with an expensive looking parkour jacket, a gold chain
and a silver chain (possibly platinum) definitely a hefty price tag. His apparel makes him
look superior suggesting high status in the celebrity paradise.
Many audiences may not like him due to association with sex, drugs and swearing within
parts of his music or music featuring this artist. Many conspiracies hint that he is involved
with the illuminati as many of his associates like Drake and Rihanna are involved in this
secretive network.
