6. CHANDRAguptaFANS
Chandragupta Maurya (321-297 BCE)
Founder and first ruler of the Mauryan Dynasty.
Built an empire covering Bihar, parts of Odisha, central India, and Bengal.
His Achievements:
Supported by his minister Chanakya (_@Kautilya).
Defeated Seleucus Nicator (Greek governor under Alexander) and expanded his
empire to:
>Eastern Afghanistan
>Baluchistan
>Areas west of the Indus River
Considered the first unifier of India.
Later Life:
Abdicated the throne in 297 BCE at the age of 42.
Became an ascetic under the Jain saint Acharya Bhadrabahu.
Migrated to South India and spent his last days in Sallekhana at Shravanabelagola
(Karnataka).

Chanakya was the teacher of the first
Mauryan Emperor, Chandragupta. Chanakya
was a planner, philosopher, and an economist
of that age. Chanakya wrote two books
'Arthashastra' and 'Nitishastra'. Chanakya
was also identified by the names _@Kautilya
and Vishnugupta.

Bindusara (297-273 BCE)
Son and successor of Chandragupta Maurya.
Expanded the Mauryan Empire across the Indian subcontinent
up to Karnataka.
Only Kalinga and the southernmost regions remained outside
Mauryan control.
Maintained friendly relations with the Hellenic West, following
his father’s policies.
Ambassadors from Syria and Egypt visited his court.
Followed the Aajivika philosophy, unlike his father, who adopted
Jainism.

Bindusara had three sons, Ashoka, Vitashoka, and
Susima; However, Susima was his favorite, and
Bindusara wanted Susima to be king, but his
ministers disapproved of this because of Susima’s
lack of intelligence [👌] and made Ashoka king
instead .

9. AshokaRUULLEESS Ashoka (273-232 BCE) and was the most famous Mauryan ruler.
First ruler to communicate with people through inscriptions.
Gave up war for peace and tolerance.
Ruled most of present-day India.
His empire stretched from Pakistan & Afghanistan (west) to
Bangladesh & Assam (east) and down to Kerala & Andhra
Pradesh (south).
Conquered Kalinga, which his ancestors couldn’t.
Became a Buddhist after witnessing the devastation of the
Kalinga War.

The word 'Ashoka' in Sanskrit means 'without sorrow'.
Grandfather of Ashoka was the founder of Maurya Dynasty.
According to a Tibetan writer Taranatha, Ashoka murdered his six
brothers to seize the throne of Magadha.
Ashoka was also known as 'Chandaashoka'.

Many more died from other causes
After the conquest, Ashoka experienced deep remorse for his actions.
He developed a strong inclination towards dhamma (✨righteousness✨) and began to promote
peace and non-violence.

Ashoka’s vast empire required high maintenance costs.
Land revenue was the main source of income:
Fixed between one-fourth and one-sixth of the produce, depending on soil fertility.
Trade was well-developed and contributed significantly to revenue.
