Harry Houdini was born in 1874 in Budapest and grew up Jewish, the son of a Rabbi. He had a career as a magician and illusionist from 1891, becoming famous for his daring escape acts such as challenging police to keep him locked up or being buried alive. His wife Bess assisted him and after his death, they had agreed he would communicate the message "Rosabelle believe" to her from beyond the grave.
