7. REPUBLIC DAY

8. India celebrates its 68th Republic Day today. The Parade, held every year at Rajpath in
Delhi, concluded earlier today. On January 26, 1950, the Constitution of India came into
force, and Republic Day is celebrated to honour that day.
On this day in 1950, the first President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad took oath. President
Pranab Mukherjee started the ceremony by hoisting the Indian flag, following which the
Republic Day Parade began from Rajpath.
The parade, held annually on January 26, starts from Rajpath and ends at Red Fort in
Delhi. Every year on Republic Day, India invites a visiting head of state, who is the state
guest of honour (chief guest) for the ceremony.

9. This year's guest of honour was the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Mohammed bin Zayed Al
Nahyan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who personally received the Prince at the airport, said
that United Arab Emirates is India's valued partner and close ties between the two
countries are important for the entire region. India and UAE have signed 13 agreements,
including one on strategic cooperation.
Though Republic Day is celebrated on January 26 with the Parade on Rajpath, the
celebrations are spread over three days and ends with the Beating Retreat ceremony on
January 29.

10. The Indian Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949, adopted by the Constitution,
which came into effect on January 26, 1950,
The latter day marked the celebration of the country's first Republic Day. As we celebrate
our 68th Republic Day on Thursday, here is a glimpse of India's maiden Republic

• Beating Retreat ceremony is held on January 29 at Vijay Chowk with the performance of Indian
Army, Air Force and Navy bands. It marks the end of the Republic Day celebrations in India.
• This day is one of three national holidays, the other two being Independence Day on August 15 and
Gandhi Jayanti on October 2.

Affirming that the economy is right on track,
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Union
Budget for 2016-17. Citing that the CPI inflation
has come down to 5.4% from 9 plus, he said it is
huge relief for the public.

Infrastructure and agriculture cess to be levied.
Excise duty raised from 10 to 15 per cent on
tobacco products other than beedis
1 per cent service charge on purchase of luxury
cars over Rs. 10 lakh and in-cash purchase of

20. Just as aircraft flying at supersonic speeds create cone-shaped sonic booms,
pulses of light can leave behind cone-shaped wakes of light. Now, a superfast
camera has captured the first-ever video of these events.
Science behind the tech: When an object moves through air, it propels the air
in front of it away, creating pressure waves that move at the speed of
sound in all directions. If the object is moving at speeds equal to or greater
than sound, it outruns those pressure waves. As a result, the pressure waves
from these speeding objects pile up on top of each other to create shock
waves known as sonic booms, which are akin to claps of thunder.

21. The fact that light can travel faster in one material than in another helped
scientists to generate photonic Mach cones.
First,study lead author Jinyang Liang, an optical engineer at Washington
University in St. Louis, and his colleagues designed a narrow tunnel filled with
dry ice fog.
This tunnel was sandwiched between plates made of a mixture of silicone
rubber and aluminum oxide powder.
Then, the researchers fired pulses of green laser light — each lasting only 7
picoseconds (trillionths of a second) — down the tunnel.
These pulses could scatter off the specks of dry ice within the tunnel,
generating light waves that could enter the surrounding plates.
The green light that the scientists used traveled faster inside the tunnel than it
did in the plates.
As such, as a laser pulse moved down the tunnel, it left a cone of slower-
moving overlapping light waves behind it within the plates.

22. AGNI
Agni is an intermediate to long range ballistic surface to surface missile. Agni
series consists of 6 different types namely Agni I, Agni II, Agni III, Agni IV,
Agni V and Agni VI. Agni series missiles differ from other missiles in the fact
that Agni missiles are multi stage type while other missiles are single stage. Agni
I is Medium Range Ballistic Missile (MRBM) while Agni II, III & IV comes
under the category of Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IBRM) while Agni V
and VI are Inter-continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM).
AGNI – I
It has a range of up to 750 – 1250 km. It weighs 12 ton and can carry
nuclear warheads of 1 ton. It was first tested and launched in the year 1989.

23. AGNI – II
It has a range of up to 2000 – 3000 km. It weighs 16 ton and can carry 1 ton
of nuclear warhead. It was successfully tested and launched in the year 1999.
AGNI – III
It has a range of up to 3000 - 5000 km. It weighs 22 ton and can carry 2.5
ton of nuclear warhead. It was first tested on 9th
July 2006 and it was
unsuccessful. The reason for the failure was recirculation of hot gases. These
gases entered in to the missile base shroud and damaged the electronic
components. It was again successfully launched on 12th
April 2009.
AGNI – IV
It has a range of up to 4000 km and weighs about 17 Ton. It differs from the
early stages of Agni missiles by the fact that a lot of new technologies were
introduced in this variant. The new technologies introduced were Re-Entry to
atmosphere heat shield, Composite Rocket Motor, Modern Avionics with full
digital control system providing very high level of accuracy in hitting the target.
It was successfully launched on 15th
November 2011.
AGNI – V
It is a three stage type ICBM having weight of 50 ton and warhead capacity
of 1.5 ton. It has a range of up to 5000 – 8000 km. This is an upgraded version of
Agni III. It was successfully launched on 19th
April 2012. The accuracy of this
missile is less than 9 metre so this missile is considered to be best among any of
the missile built by India.
AGNI – VI
It is a four stage type ICBM and weighs about 50 to 70 ton. It has the
warhead capacity of 3 ton. It has a range of up to 8000 – 12000 km. It is reported
to be the latest and most advanced version among the Agni missiles. It has the
capability to be launched from submarine and from land based launchers.

25. Wayanad, Kerala
In 2006 the ministry of Panchayati Raj named Wayanad one of the country’s 250 most
backward districts, meaning that it has very high levels of poverty and in 2015,
Wayanad was ranked as the 9th
most beautiful and most visited tourist spot in the world.
The name of the district Wayanad is derived from Vayal Nadu. Vayal represents Paddy
fields and Nadu is the land. So Wayanad actually symbolizes a land of paddy fields. The
serene beauty of the place lies in its nature and surroundings that include fog capped
mountains, dense forests and fertile green agricultural estates. It is also home to a group
of wild animals and has a wonderful assortment of flora and fauna.
Being called the 'abode of Kerala's tribal population', Wayanad is a luxuriant forested
land dotted with misty valleys, sprinkling waterfalls and spice plantations. Wildlife
sanctuaries are the most popular attractions here.

26. Places to visit in Wayanad
1. Kuruva Island
With serene tranquility and extensive breadth of evergreen woodland, the place is to be
found on the offshoot of Kabani River and serves tourists as a marvelous spot for picnic.
This islet is secluded but usually welcomes a group of scarce species of herbs, birds and
orchids and thus its splendor attracts the tourists visiting the places near Wayanad.

27. 2. Banasura Sagar Dam
The biggest Earth Dam in the country, and ranked second in Asia located in around
25km in the direction of the north – west of Kalpetta.
The dam lengthens to a spacious part with crystal clear flow of waters.
The reservoir formed by the dam is dotted with tiny islands enveloped in thick foliage,
and with the Banasura hill in the background, offers a magnificent view.
The Banasura Sagar dam with its massive earthen structure provided the fillip for
adopting rammed earth architecture while building Banasura Hill Resort.

28. 3. Edakkal Cave
This cave is definitely one of the most visited attractions in Wayanad that is famous for
its scenic beauty.
It is a cranny of about 96 ft in length and 22 ft in width respectively.
A crevice was formed due to a rock sliding because of natural weather conditions.
The profundity of the cranny is almost 30 ft. inside the caves are pictorial writings
believed to date to at least 6,000 BCE, from the Neolithic man, indicating the presence of
a prehistoric civilization or settlement in this region.
The Stone Age carvings of Edakkal are rare and are the only known examples from south
India.

29. 4. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Located around 16 km away from Sulthan Bathery, the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary,
popularly known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a rainforest wich connects
Nagarhole and Bandipur parks in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu.
Spread over an area of 345 sq km, the sanctuary is an abode of rich flora and fauna..
You can sight here maruthi, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal etc.
You will get excited with the sight of wild animal like elephant, tiger, panthers, jungle
cats, civet cats, monkeys, wild dogs etc.
The sanctuary is also blessed with its endless population of birds like peacocks, babblers,
cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls etc.

30. 5. Soochipara Waterfalls
Sentinel Rock Waterfalls also known as Soochipara Waterfalls Wayanad is one of the
biggest waterfalls in Kerala.
Soochipara Waterfalls or Sentinel Rock Waterfalls is 200 metres high and below the falls
and nearby there is water where we can take a cool dip and enjoy the falls and have a
nice bath.
Long trekking walk to reach Soochippara Waterfalls is enjoyable.
The Soochipara Falls is located at Vellarimala and represents water flowing through a
needle rock.
The view and sound of the Soochipara Falls is really mesmerizing, which can be heard as
we walk towards it through the 3 km long path in the forest.

31. 6. Chembra Peak
Eight kilometer south of Kalpetta, near to the town of Meppady, lays the highest peak in
Wayanad, the Chembra Peak (2,100 m). Chembra peak adjoins Nilgiri hills in Tamil
Nadu and Vallarimala in Kozhikode.
It is best suited for people who are an admirer of soothing natural beauty and love to
have an adventure trip.

32. 7. Neelimala Viewpoint
It is just not water, but a milky way, tearing apart the dense greenery of Wayanad forests.
The Meenmutti waterfalls, gushing down and then flowing in cascades further down its
course is an awesome sight to watch from the Neelimala viewpoint near Vaduvanchal in
Wayanad.
Completing the first part of the ascend, which is about half a kilometer, the trekking path
gets narrower and goes down before it climbs up again.
Now the vegetation on the sides changes to tall, wild grass, including the lemon grass
variety.
The narrow path goes further up and suddenly opens up into a panoramic view, with the
mountain folds of the Western Ghats on your left and a hill slope replete with grass and
studded with boulders on the right. You have reached the Neelimala view point.

33. Climate in Wayanad
The climate of Wayanad is calm and enjoyable throughout the year.
October to May is the best time to visit Wayanad.
Summer season in wayanad
March, April and May, these are the months of summer in Wayanad.
The pleasant cool breeze originated from the adjoining forest backdrop
makes the aura much comfortable. Sometimes the temperature touches
the height of 36 °C.
Monsoon season in Wayanad
The climate is a bit warm in this season as South-west and north-east
monsoon usher the strong airstream and rainfalls. Wayanad appears
stunning with regular drizzling in this season.
Winter season in Wayanad
The times in between December to February are much cooler than the
other months of the year with downfall of temperature up to 10°C.
Thus many travelers choose this duration as the best season to visit
Wayanad.

34. Kerala backwaters
Another amazing tourist spot, Backwaters in Kerala are network canals both manmade
and natural, 38 rivers and 5 big lakes extending from one end of Kerala to the other.
The backwaters in Kerala cover a total area of about 461.2894 sq. km.
Backwaters are one of the major tourism products of Kerala, being unique to the state.
Traditionally used as one of the main transportation alleys, today backwaters offer a
rejuvenating experience for tourists visiting Kerala.
The backwaters are usually explored by hiring a boat for one or several days. If you go for
more than a day, the boat usually comes with a navigator and a cook, which provide you
with various facilities when exploring the backwaters.
Kerala was ranked as one of the "50 destinations of a lifetime" by National Geographic
Traveler in a special collectors' issue released just before the turn of the millennium, with
houseboat and backwater resort tourism in Alappuzha seen as leading factors

35. Vembanad is the largest of the lakes, covering an area of 2033 km².
The lake has a large network of canals that meander through the region of Kuttanad.
The backwaters have a unique ecosystem: freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater
from the Arabian Sea.
A barrage has been built near Thanneermukkom, so salt water from the sea is prevented
from entering the deep inside, keeping the fresh water intact. Such fresh water is
extensively used for irrigation purposes.

The release of Singam 3, which was expected to hit the screens on Diwali last year, has
been withheld by its makers citing various reasons. Just two days ahead of its release on
January 26, Singam 3 release date was postponed due to the outbreak of violence in
Tamil Nadu over Jallikattu, which has mainly affected the box office business in Chennai.
Suriya had recently served People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) a legal notice
for accusing him of using the jallikattu protests to gain publicity.
After failing to release the films during major festivals, however, the makers have now
settled for a non-holiday weekend.
Singam 3 is the third instalment in the super cop series created by Hari. Besides Suriya,
the film has Anushka Shetty, Shruti Haasan and Thakur Anoop Singh in important roles.

42. Bangladesh Rise to the fame
For a country, which attained a Test status in 2001, in
fact, they are the latest of the many teams to attain the
Test status; Bangladesh has come a long way crossing
over leaps and bounds. The way Bangladesh played in
the first test against New Zealand in the Wellington
was something that made the cricket fans look in awe.
Bangladesh has come a long way to this stage thanks
to the many brave men inclusive of the Captains.
Habibul Bashar, one of the captains who guided
Bangladesh to a respectable level in their initial days.
They sprung out with surprises when everybody least
expected. India went into the 2007 World Cup as one
of the favorites. But they were shocked by Bangladesh
in the group stages.
There were many players who stood out as excellent
performers. Mohammed Ashraful and Habibul Bashar
laid the foundation for them. In 2007, when
DavWhatmore took over as the coach, Bangladesh
went to whole a new level. They started to win
matches. Their first Test victory came against
Zimbabwe and won many ODI games against the
impeccable Australian side of the early 2000s.
Post-2010, their approach to big tournaments has
been massive. Out of last three Asia cups, they have
been in the finals twice. In the 2010 Asia Cup finals,
they almost took the game away from Pakistan, before
losing in a humdinger.
In 2015 World Cup, they had emerged a much better
team by entering the knock-out stages. They had
beaten England in one of their League matches to
enter the Quarter-Finals.
For a long period, they were termed as Underdogs. But
after their World Cup upset in 2015, they went to on
to grab many Series victories. Post World Cup, they
have beaten Pakistan, India and South Africa with a
line of Series victories. Some credit should be given to
the Bangladesh Premier League. Many new talents had
erupted from the League. Though the league didn’t
gain global attention, it has done a lot to the
Bangladesh Cricket. The experiences of established
international stars have sure helped the local players.
Now with Bangladesh touring New Zealand, they have
gone to a different level. Their home conditions are
doctored to spin. But they can’t expect the same from
New Zealand. Even though they have been on the
losing side, they have proved that they can withstand
the best of the attacks in the World. Day 2 of the first
Test in the ongoing Series made way into the Record
books of Cricket. Shakib scored a superb double ton in
a single day. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 150.
Bangladesh posted their highest total, that too in an
overseas tour. In near future, Bangladesh is growing to
be one of the rapidly growing underdogs. There will
be no doubts that they will be a team to beat.

We were always negligent or ignorant about new
things but all of a sudden everything kept changing

fanatics stuck their ears to. Radio commentators so
regional speakers and gave the listeners a real feel of
what was happening on the ground.
A decade later, the world was stormed by a sensation
called Sachin Tendulkar. He was the main cause of the
commercial development of cricket in India. He
single-handedly made the rest of the world to stop by
and look at India. His batting prowess made the
inevitables to doubt themselves. Wherever he went, he
was a star.
Foreign investments started to pour in India, just to
make money out of Sachin’s game. That is when
television started to enter Indian houses.
A major breakthrough happened in Indian cricket in

48. 10:57 PM. She glared at her wrist watch. Had it been
any other day, she would have been snoring by then.
It was the penultimate day of the month, implying
that she had only a day more to complete the month’s
accounts. Her eyes strolled over her visiting cards
kept on the table - Aaradhana, Chief Accountant. As a
little girl, she had not even thought of getting into
accounts in life. Her father had given her the
magnanimous opportunity of choosing between
engineering and accounts. She had chosen accounts
because it ranked first in alphabetical order. She
analysed the bills, drafts, reimbursements. They
seemed to keep coming, one after another as if they
had no end. Her gorgeous face and perfect features
had worn out after such a busy day.
11:30 PM – Watch Nat Geo. A remainder popped up
on her Blackberry Z10. She could do nothing but
smile. She had missed her favourite weekly show on
Mega structures. She always wished month ends
were nowhere near Saturdays, for she hated missing
the show. After getting done with her work finally,
Aaradhana decided to go home. She looked at the
elevator. You’ve got a little fatter, Aaradhana. Rohan,
a colleague had told her. She took the stairs
presuming that it would burn her some calories. The
very thought of going home brought to her mind the
personal comfort she enjoyed there. She would walk
in straight, tell her mother how funny the
reimbursement proposals were. Her mother would
reciprocate with “Your dad fought for the parking
space” or “Our neighbour slapped her husband”.
Aaradhana would be snoring when her mother had
convincingly reached the climax of the
neighbourhood stories.She reached the parking lot at
11:45 PM and started searching for her bike key. Her
first visit to this place at late hours had been blood
curdling. She had mistaken the silhouette of a security
personnel for a ghost. After many such funny
incidents, even ghosts had become her month end
friends. To reach home, she either had to travel inside
the city for 12 kilometer or drive through a 7
kilometer long stretch called “Edison Road” that was
proudly declared “Unsafe for Women” by the city
police. She had not even thought of taking the shorter
route before. Sensing that she was feeling sleepy like
never before, she wanted to get home as soon as
possible. She chose Edison Road for the first time. She
ignited her engine and started home.

Chennai has to pay. Peace is NOT an option.
Aysun was thinking, plotting each and every
move. Her contacts in India were numerous, but
would they harm innocents? No. Each and every
one of her contacts were Anti Government and
intended to harm only government officials. None
would hurt the public. Someone new has to be
found. She will have to find them herself. She was
coming to India.
Aysun arrived at Istanbul Ataturk Airport
(IAA) at 3:00PM , boarded the flight at 3:20PM
and reached Chennai Airport (MAA) at 3:20AM
the next day with a one-hour stop at Bahrain. She
had no time to be jet-lagged. She hated every
square inch of the city. She searched for John, one
of her contacts in Chennai. He was supposed to
deliver her Glock 17. It was a small weapon for
her taste, though good enough for threatening.
Even a bazooka wouldn't satisfy her thirst for
vengeance. She visited the restroom. Door
number 12. She opened the flush tank and
searched for the pager.
Outdated technology wasn't monitored
much. She read the message and kept it back. John
was compromised. Plan B.
“Dhruv?” Catherine called out.She searched
for him and called him. It was 4 AM. Dhruv
picked up, “Where the hell are you?” “Oh sorry.
Had to visit the office. Emergency”. “Another
suspect?” “You know we're not supposed to talk
about that”. “Chill, bye”. “Bye”.
John knew he was compromised. The Glock
had to be disposed off. Anytime now. He dropped
the package into a cab. He memorized the
registration number and walked away. Aysun will
be upset.
Ram was watching John. Ram : IIT Madras
alumni, UPSC rank 7 at 2012. He had worked his
way into RAW being an IPS officer. He was now a
ghost of RAW. Undercover. Ram didn't think
much of John until he saw the Glock. A clear
bulge near the belt. John wasn't an amateur. The
chase has started.
