Editor’s Note
Wish you a very warm welcome.
We often face problems of being spoken harshly
either by our friends, family and relatives.
Let me tell you a small story. Once upon a time
there lived a farmer who never controlled his
tongue and was harsh.
One day he insulted his neighbor. Realizing his
mistake, he went to the preacher to ask for
forgiveness. The preacher told him to take a bag
of feathers and drop them in the center of the
town. The farmer did as he was told. Then the
preacher asked him to go and collect the feathers
and put them back in the bag.
The farmer tried but couldn’t as the feathers had
all blown away. When he returned with empty
bag, the preacher said, “The same thing is true
about your words. You dropped them rather easily
but you cannot retrieve them, so be very careful in
choosing your words.”
So it is necessary to think as much as you can
before you speak. And at times it is much better if
we do not speak when not necessary.
Because, “Words can only be forgiven and not
forgotten.”

UNION BUDGET 2017 – What’s getting cheaper
and what’s getting expensive!!!
This time around, the budget did not impact the
price of commodities and consumer items across
the board.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the
Union Budget and Railway Budget for 2017-18
in parliament on Wednesday. Here is a list of
what gets cheaper and what gets dearer in the
new financial year. This time around, the budget
did not impact the price of commodities and
consumer items across the board. Though the
reduced impact on price changes may also be
attributed to the GST that is awaiting rollout, GST
subsumes nearly all central and state indirect
taxes and the government may look to let GST
guide the change once it kicks in.
Here’s what has got cheap!
 Booking train tickets online – No change in
train fares and removal of service charge
while booking tickets on IRCTC website
along with competitive pricing of tickets
 RO membrane elements for purifiers for
household use
 Liquefied natural gas (LNG)
 Solar tempered glass used in solar panels–
the budget gives a big push on solar energy
and assured electricity to all by 2019.
 Fuel cell based power generator systems
and wind-operated energy generators
 Vegetable tanning extracts that are used for
tanning leather products
 Point of Sale machines card and fingerprint
readers
 Group insurance for Defence services
Here’s what is going to be expensive!
 Cigarettes, tobacco, pan masala, bidis,
cheroots
 LED lamps
 Cashew nuts (roasted and salted)
 Aluminium ores and concentrates
 Polymer coated MS tapes used in
manufacturing of optical fibres
 Silver coins and medallions
The 10 themes highlighted by
The Finance Minister
* Farmers: For whom we have committed to
double their income in five years
* Rural population: Providing employment and
basic infrastructure
* Youth: Energising them through education skills
and jobs
* Poor and the underprevileged: Strengthening
the system of social security and affordable
housing
* Infrastructure for efficiency, productivity and
quality of life
* Financial sector: Growth and stability through
stronger institutions
* Digital economy for speedy accountability and
transparency
* Public service: Effective governance and efficient
service delivery through people’s participation.
H1 – B Work visa explained: The ‘What’, ‘Who’
and ‘How’
A Bill aimed at overhauling the work visa
program was on Tuesday introduced in the
US House of Representatives.
The latest work visa reforms, if passed by
majority vote in both houses of Congress,
will make it harder for those applying for
H1-B visas as the minimum wage has been
more than doubled, from $60,000 to
$130,000.
What is the High Skilled Integrity and
Fairness Act?
Introduced in the lower house by
California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren,
the Act will make it mandatory for
employers sponsoring H1-B visas for
immigrant workers to pay a minimum
wage of $130,000, 200 per cent higher
than the previous minimum wage of
$60,000.
Who will be affected?
The reforms are being introduced to protect
the interests of Americans against the
influx of foreign workers in the US job
market.
US issues 85,000 H1-B visas every year, a
sizeable chunk of the applicants are
Indians.
Indian students migrating to the states for
pursuing a higher degree and tech
companies that send their workers on off-
site projects will be among the most
affected by the changes to the visa policy.
How will this impact India?
The effects of the Act have already been felt
in the Indian markets, with share prices of
major tech companies plummeting.
Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Tech Mahindra
and HCL were among those badly hit.
The Act could also lead to a decrease in
interest in students flocking to American
universities, thereby minimizing the brain
drain.
Will my US visa be rejected?
As far as genuine students are concerned,
the Act also intends to build a “bridge” from
F-1 student status to Lawful Permanent
Residence.
So visas will not be denied solely on the
basis that the applicant intends to
immigrate to the US.
This applies for those holding O-1
(Extraordinary ability), P (Athletes, Artists
and Entertainers) and free trade visa
holders.
Does President Donald Trump have
anything to do with it?
Though Trump had advocated for applying
curbs on the number of H1-B visas issued
annually, he did not sign an executive
order, similar to the one on banning
immigration from seven majority-Muslim
countries.
The Bill, however, is likely to be passed as
the Republicans control both houses of the
Congress — the Senate and House of
representatives.

Samsung W2016 Duos Flip Phone

Samsung GALAXY X (Fold Phone)
You might think the Samsung Edge display is
cool, but something cooler is coming very
soon.
Samsung’s mythical foldable smartphone
might actually see the light of day, according
to a report from the Korea Herald.
The Herald’s source claims that the long-
rumoured flexible smartphone will be
launched in Q3 (third quarter – July to
September) this year, after three years of
development.
That, however, is dependent on Samsung
making a final decision on the device’s
“marketability and profitability”, which could
mean that it’s never released at all.
According to a source that spoke to the Korea
Herald, Samsung may roll out more than
‘100,000 units of fold – out devices’ later on
this year.
This device can reportedly be used as a 7 –
inch tablet when unfolded, so it’s unclear it’s
meant to be a phone or a tablet.
The company is still deliberating to unveil a
foldable device this year, and it will wait until
its ‘executive – level reshuffle’ – the shuffle
has been delayed to February or March as a
Samsung executive is currently involved in an
alleged bribery scandal involved the
frequently – impeached South Korean
president.

GATE Exam Pattern
Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
These questions are objective in nature and each question will have choice of four answers, out of
which the candidate has to mark the correct answer. Each question carries 1 or 2 marks questions in all
the sections.
Numerical Answer Questions
There will be no choices available for these types of questions. A Numeric Answer question carries 1 or
2 marks questions in all sections. The answer for these questions is a real number to be entered by using
mouse and virtual keypad displayed on the monitor. No negative marking for these questions.
TYPES OF QUESTIONS
GATE 2017 Exam consists of Multiple Choice Questions and Numerical Type Questions in
all papers & sections. Multiple Choice Questions will contain 4 options, of which only one is correct.
For Numerical Type Questions a numerical value as the answer should be entered using mouse and
virtual keyboard on the monitor. The following are type of Questions:
RECALL:
These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline. The candidate is expected
to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory directly or at most from a one-line
computation.
COMPREHENSION:
These questions will test the candidate's understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring
him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.
APPLICATION:
In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through
computation or by logical reasoning.
ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS:
These can be linked questions, where the answer to the first question of the pair is required in
order to answer its successor. Or these can be common data questions, in which two questions share the
same data but can be solved independently of one another.
COMMON DATA QUESTIONS:
Multiple questions may be linked to a common data problem, passage and the like. Two or three
questions can be formed from the given common data problem. Each question is independent and its
solution obtainable from the above problem data/passage directly. (Answer of the previous question is
not required to solve the next question). Each question under this group will carry two marks.
LINKED ANSWER QUESTIONS:
These questions are of problem solving type. A problem statement is followed by two questions
based on the problem statement. The two questions are designed such that the solution to the second
question depends upon the answer to the first one. In other words, the first answer is an intermediate step
in working out the second answer. Each question in such linked answer questions will carry two marks.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR GATE?
 GATE examination consists only of multiple and numerical answer type questions, hence only
correct answer fetches marks.
 Practice previous year question papers and analyze the weak topics and concentrate more on those
topics. Candidates must try to solve the papers in a given time limit to obtain an idea as to how
many questions are solved within the allotted time.
 Impart equal emphasis on both theory and numerical problems.
 Browse through the GATE syllabus for topics allotted more weightage and prepare them.
 Group Study is an effective way to brush up knowledge about technical topics with fellow
partners and also helps to explore new techniques and methods to better understand the topics.
 Do not make wild guess as there is negative marking associated with the questions.
 Prepare the list of important definitions, equations, derivations, theorems, laws in every subject.
 Pay more attention while attempting linked and common data questions.

TOURISM
HONG KONG Night View
Hong Kong
Ditch the shopping malls and skyscrapers and delve into the city’s rich cultural
heritage with a visit to one of Hong Kong’s top five temples.
Nowhere is better to learn all there is to know about the hopes, dreams, fears and
superstitions of this city’s industrious urbanites – especially true during Chinese
New Year and important lunar calendar festival dates.
While some places of worship have been given a glossy new makeover, many of
Hong Kong’s oldest temples have been serving as important community gathering
points for hundreds of years.
The Five Famous temples in Hong Kong
1. Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple
With its bold, red pillars and ornamental latticework, Wong Tai Sin displays all the
qualities of the archetypal Taoist Chinese temple. Colorful and noisy, worshipers come
year round to pray for good fortune and divine guidance from the “Great Immortal
Wong.” Crowds flock here during the Chinese New Year to offer incense, make wishes
and visit fortune tellers in hopes of an auspicious and prosperous year to come. Visiting
the temple during this time may be interesting from a cultural perspective, but it is
certainly not for the faint-hearted. Throngs of people push their way through the
winding temple complex in a cloud of smoky incense towards the main altar and gather
around stalls selling charms and amulets of all shapes and sizes. It is certainly a once in a
lifetime experience, but alternatively, an early morning weekday visit will serve just fine.
2. Chi Lin Nunnery and Lian Garden
At Diamond Hill, only one subway stop away from the Wong Tai Sin temple, you’ll find
the peaceful and serene Chi Lin Nunnery.
In stark contrast to its colorful and brash Taoist neighbor, the Buddhist nunnery exudes
calm and tranquility with smooth stone balustrades, lotus ponds and stunning wooden
architecture. Inspired by Japanese and Tang Dynasty temples, the elegant series of halls
and walkways were constructed without the use of nails, using a complex design of
counterweights and dowels.
Across the road, the Nan Lian Garden is a scenic oasis amid towering high-rise
apartments looming up along the hillside. A relaxing stroll past ancient bonsai trees, koi
ponds and meticulously landscaped gardens is the perfect antidote for those needing
some time out from the hustle and bustle of the city.
3. Ten Thousand Buddhas Monestery
Although calling itself a monastery, the name is a bit of a misnomer as there are no
resident monks at this eclectic Sha Tin temple.
Follow the steep winding path up the hillside, flanked by 500 life-sized Arhand statues
to reach the main complex and its 9-story pagoda.
Here you’ll supposedly find more than 13,000 Buddha statues – but at this point, who’s
counting? – and a few bodhisattvas on horseback for good measure.
The main attraction, however, is the preserved body of Yuet Kai, the monastery’s
supremely devout founder.
Embalmed in lacquer, plastered with gold leaf and dressed in robes, the upright body
currently sits on display in a glass case inside the main monastery building.
4. Man Mo Temple
Stepping into the Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road is like entering another world, a
realm inhabited by the venerable deities of Man (God of Literature) and Mo (God of
War) who are worshiped here.
Rays of sunlight cut through the rising smoke of giant incense coils hanging low from
the ceiling and down onto the altars of the 10 judges of the underworld.
Make sure to take in all the details – the lines of descending green Shekwan roof tiles
represent bamboo and longevity, while the antique sedan chairs inside were used to
carry statues of the gods during festival processions.
5. Lam Tsuen Tin Hau Temple & Wishing Trees
This quaint collection of villages in Tai Po has been drawing visitors to its Tin Hau
Temple and two wishing trees for hundreds of years.
Traditionally, festival goers would write their wishes on joss paper and tie it to an
orange, which was then tossed up towards one of the banyan tree’s highest boughs – the
higher the branch the better the odds of your wish coming true!
As the practice became more popular, authorities stepped in to help preserve the trees
and visitors are now encouraged to tie wishes to wooden racks nearby instead.
Steps away you’ll find a small Tin Hau temple, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea,
which can typically be found in any ancient fishing community in Hong Kong or along
the Chinese coastline.
Sit down with a fortune teller here if you want to find out about that wish.

Madras Rajagopala Radhakrishnan Naidu (14 April
1907 – 17 September 1979), popularly known by his stage

career on stage in his early years, he acted in films from the
1930s to the 1970s, and then, giving up films, he went back
to his first love, the stage.
Radha gained popularity with the success of his stage
play Ratha Kanneer. His performance in the 1954 film

name in Tamil Nadu.
He was survived by his wives M. R. Saraswathi, M. R.

from his chair and shot twice at Ramachandran's left ear.
Both bullets got lodged in Ramachandran's neck. Radha
then turned the gun on himself and tried to shoot himself,
but the bullet just scratched his right temple. Radha and
Ramachandran were admitted to the Government General
Hospital, Chennai, where they survived after proper
treatment.[3]
The only eye witness for the shooting event
was producer Vasu.
As majority of the evidences were against Radha, he was
sentenced to a seven year term. At the High Court hearing,
considering his age, the sentence was reduced to three and
a half years.
Death:
After being released from jail, Radha died of jaundice on

January 1922
Region: Golkonda, Hyderabad State
Death: 21st
October 1998 (76 years)
Titles: ‘Lion’ of Bollywood
Children: Shahid Ali Khan, Zahid Ali Khan and
Abid Ali Khan
Hamid Ali Khan (27 January 1922 – 21 October 1998[1]
),
better known by his stage name Ajit, was a prolific Hindi
film actor. He acted in over two hundred movies in almost
four decades.
Ajit, who ran away from home to Mumbai after selling his
college books, started his career in films in the 1940s. Luck
did not favour him in the initial stages.
He began with the 1946 movie Shahe Misra, acting
opposite Geeta Bose, and also did films such
as Sikander (van mala), Hatimtai (1947), Aap
Beeti (Khursheed) and many more.
Ajit switched over to play the villain. His first movie as a
villain was Suraj, followed by films such
as Zanjeer and Yaadon Ki Baaraat.
Famous Dialogues:
“Saara Shehar Mujhe Lion ke naam se jaantha hei” –
Kalicharan
“Lily! Don’t be silly..!” – Yaadon Ki Baraat
“Mona Darling” – Zanjeer
His dialogue delivery remains popular even to this date.
Acting Style:
Ajit almost always portrayed the sophisticated, educated,
well groomed evil mastermind, albeit heartless villain. Ajit
was presented in striking western attire, the "bold" checked
suits, matching overcoats, white leather shoes, wide
sunglasses, jewellery accessories etc.
He always had a savvy female accomplice, usually named
"Mona." Some of his popularity in present time is due to
the innumerable jokes and parodies made on his famous
lines by comedians.
Death:
Another "villain" Amrish Puri said Ajit's death is a sad loss
to films. "Ajit developed his own style of acting and
delivery of dialogue. We still remember his style of acting
which is guidance to the new generation of actors." Prem
Chopra.
He is still remembered for bringing the most famous
villains in the history of Indian cinema to life including
Amrish Puri, Pran, Prem Chopra and Amjad Khan.

is a façade as he is a terror called LION in the

Not even his close friend IG P. N. Khanna (Prem

David Shepherd – The umpire of 20th
Century
The job of an umpire in cricket is mentally the
toughest in the game. Concentrating on each ball,
he takes note of each balls and standing still near
the stumps. The umpire also bears the risk of
getting hurt, but also enjoys the greatest view. He
is the most fortunate fanatic of the games. It is not
too often, fans remember an umpire very well.
One among the sparse is David Shepherd.
David Shepherd was born in Devon, England on
27th
December, 1940. He played minor counties in
England, until he was selected to represent
Gloucestershire in 1965. He played until 1979. He
was never in contention for the national call, but
was a regular in the Gloucestershire XI. He was a
fine timer of the ball, as he had to rely on it
because of the shape of his body. He made 13
hundreds in his county career.
He took to umpiring in 1981. He officiated in a
first-class match. Soon he was recognized as one
of the fairest umpire in the business. Within two
years of officiating in first class match, he was in
the umpire panel for the 1983 World Cup. His
international umpiring started from 1983 and
spanned over 22 years. His first test was in 1985,
when he officiated in the fourth Ashes test that
year.
He kept up the Spirit of the game through all his
years. He was never shy of warning players for
breaching the rules.
He once removed Waqar Younis from bowling in
a match, as he bowled two beamers. It was the first
of its kind. He was respected by fans and players
on and off the field. His round shaped body was
very well recognized among cricket fraternity.
Shep, as he called by his peers, was a very
superstitious person. In cricket, an individual or a
team score of 111 or the multiples of the same is
termed as ‘Nelson’. It is considered as unfortunate
for the batsman or the team. Therefore, he lofts
one of his foots from the ground, which he
considered to bring good luck for the batsman or
the team.
He is also known for his signaling. His shake of the
hands while signaling fours was mocked by fans
all over the world. His ‘out’ signal would display a
sense of solidarity. He was the part of the first
panel of ICC Elite panel of neutral umpires in
2002. He was given a guard of honor by New
Zealand and Australian players when the two
countries met in 2005. His last match happened in
June 2005, in a match between West Indies and
Pakistan. Brian Lara presented him with a bat
thanking him for his service towards the game.
International Cricket Council paid its tribute to
David Shepherd by giving his name for the trophy
in the umpire of the year awards as a part of ICC
annual awards.
Wasim Akram – Concept of Pendulum
Define Pendulum. It is defined as a
weight suspended from a pivot, so that it can
swing freely. Compare the pendulum to a
bowler, the pivot as the body, bob as cricket
ball and rod as hands. You will probably get to
the image of WasimAkram.
Thanks to Imran Khan, Akram was one
of the prodigies of Imran’s Pakistan in his early
days. Akram was there whenever Imran
needed him. The impact of Imran Khan was
huge in WasimAkram. In every interview,
Wasim never forgets to mention Imran. If
Imran was the founder of reverse swing,
Akram is the greatest exponent of it. To be
specific, Akram was a better reverse-swing
bowler than a conventional swing bowler.
Anyone can swing a cricket ball, why is
Akram, the special one? Very few in the history
have managed to bowl the out-swing from
round the wicket with the control over line
and length as good as Akram. In the 1992
World cup, Wasim did the same in the finals
against Chris Lewis of England. That was to me,
the best wicket for a bowler, bowling from the
round the wicket.
In a funny note, I would like to share an
incident from Akram’s career. Pakistan was
playing against Srilanka in Australia for The
World Series Cup in 1989.
Roshan Mahanama was in strike. Wasim
released the ball, wide of the batsman. But,
after pitching in off-stump line, the ball went
straight to find the batsman's abdomen guard.
Mahanama was shaken a bit. Taking few
stretches, he was back to face the next ball. It
again hit the same spot, to which he was
grounded.
What makes him even more admirable is
that he was diagnosed with diabetes in 1997.
He was at the peak of his career. He fought
with diabetes and worked even harder and still
living fit.
After calling it a day in his cricket career,
he started to impart his skills to the
youngsters. If you ever type swing bowling in
youtube, there will be at the least 2-3 videos
featuring WasimAkram in the home page. His
stint as the Bowling Consultant of Kolkata
Knight Riders is a huge bonus to fast bowlers in
the KKR camp, eventually Indian Cricket Team,
successful products being Mohammed Shami
and UmeshYadav.
There are many moments in history,
where we would have liked to be a part of, but
unfortunately we aren't. Watching
WasimAkram bowl at his peak form in live
was one such thing.

ENGINEERING FROM NATURE
Imagine a lotus leaf-like surface from which a water drop rolls off
automatically and takes along with it any accumulated dust. Nandini Bhandaru
of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has helped turn this vision into
reality, developing a water and oil repellent surface which presents a potential
low-cost self-cleaning solution for solar cell panel street lights and glass facades
in high rise buildings.
In the process, she has won Indian Science Congress Association's 'Young
Scientist Award' in 'Engineering Science' category for 2017. Bhandaru, who led
the research funded by the Centre's Department of Science and Technology along
with industry bodies, told ET that these "Nanostructures" can be fabricated on a
large scale for less than Rs 100 while machine-made patterns cost Rs 30,000 to
Rs 1 lakh for the same area.
A nanoparticle is about a thousandth as wide as a human hair. Bhandaru's
research is especially relevant in a country like India where dust and dirt often
tend to be oily in nature and gets accumulated easily. "Having nanostructure
coatings can enormously help in keeping the surfaces clean and even help
maintain high efficiency in case of solar cells," Bhandaru said.
Street lights are generally at such heights that it is inconvenient to clean
them. The dust and deposits reduce the efficiency of the lights. By using this
technology, the surface of street lights that gathers dust is altered, making it
easier to clean. When water is poured, the dust and deposits effortlessly flow
down. Besides, the presence of nanostructures can alter the property of the solar
street lights by making them antireflective. The solar lights currently mostly
reflect and absorb solar light, according to Bhandaru.
The Bhandaru led group is also engaged in developing Oleophobic or oil
repellent anti-fingerprint surfaces, which can be used widely in touch screen
devices. The key focus of its research is on developing solutions at nanoscale
which find wide application in areas such as electronic devices, data storage
media, optoelectronic devices and cancer therapeutics.
"The gravity is the most important force, but in the nano world this has no role.
Hence it is easier to change properties completely at nanoscale," Bhandaru
said. Most of the products developed by the group have been patented and the
group is now working to scale up the techniques for industrial collaborations and
product manufacturing.
T. MADHANAGOPAL
As she reached the start of the road, she sensed
herself getting more alert. Her thoughts of getting
home soon were overshadowed by her urge for
safety. Something about the road felt wrong.
Edison Road seemed very dull amidst the city that
cheered every person easily by its looks. Partially
broken branches hung from the trees giving an
eerie look to the already drab environment.
Densely packed trees concealed every little inch
of land on either side of the road. The road was
very rarely in use, making maintenance a non-
mandatory phenomenon. Dry leaves covered the
road partially, causing dry friction against her
tyres, evident from the gentle hiss that originated.
Street lights were obviously unnecessary on such
a stretch. But the road transport department had
made it a point to place street lights every 100
meter. The low-range street lights alternated with
dull areas making it a perfect location to shoot
horror movies. To add to her woes, the
penultimate day also turned out to be a full moon
day. Spooky! That was the only word that
Aaradhana could come up with.
She had covered about 3 Kilometer when her eyes
suddenly spotted a man standing very close to the
centre of the road. He was holding a stick taller
than him on his right hand, its bottom end
touching the road. She could not tell if he was
lean or stout, because he seemed to be covered by
a blanket. She was not sure if she should stop
near him. Little sweat beads rolled over her fair
skin. She felt her grip on the throttle loosen.
She was not in complete control of herself. She felt
her fear engulf her with all its might. For a split
second, she considered taking a U-Turn and going
back. Gathering courage from every part of her
body, she raised the throttle as she whizzed past
the man. It was after all, a scare crow. The fact
that it was not someone who might have harmed
her must have obviously calmed her nerves, but it
did not. Her fear increased instead. She could feel
her blood pressure rise with every meter she
crossed.
Aaradhana had crossed the first 5 kilometer
when she suddenly felt the vibration from her
bike getting reduced. She checked the fuel level
indicator. The dial was very much near to the “E”
mark. Oh! Not now. She had to get fuel somehow
to power her bike on. Though she was not very
much familiar with that part of the city, she knew
that the nearest fuel station was 500 meter away.
She took out her water bottle, drank it empty,
locked her bike and started walking to the fuel
station with the empty bottle. She reached the fuel
station 10 minutes later. She had not met a single
human being in the past 30 minutes and the
sudden appearance of human beings before her
totally stressed her brain. She went straight to the
fuel filling lot without even looking at the people
there. Suddenly she heard something being
dropped and it ran chills through her spine. She
filled the fuel as fast as she could and started
walking back to her bike.

CATHERINE & DHRUV
Episode 1
Chapter 4
July 19th, 2009 : Aysun was 23 then.
She was visiting Chennai for the very first
time. She had trusted the locals. She had been
pure and innocent. Chennai had raped her.
Her integrity, destroyed. Her reputation,
destroyed. She was raped physically and
mentally. The locals hadn't supported her, the
police, neither. Her life had never been the
same ever since. Now, she was here to return
the favor. She was here to rape Chennai.
Dhruv reached home by 7A.M.
Catherine hugged him as soon as she opened
the door. Every single time she saw Dhruv was
a gift. She knew how many of Dhruv's
coworkers had been martyred. She
remembered Ram often. They were pretty
close. His death was shrouded in mystery.
Details were hushed up. All she knew was that
he was killed and buried. She kissed Dhruv's
forehead and ushered him inside. She held his
hand and thanked Jesus.
One of the most irritating aspects of
working in RAW was that Dhruv couldn't
divulge any details to anyone.
Even to Catherine.
Anyone might be watching. Dhruv had seen
Ram at the airport. How could he not
recognize that face? His closest buddy wasn't
dead. That was news to celebrate, if there
weren't bigger matters in his hands.
Catherine sensed Dhruv's restlessness.
Blue saree won't work this time. Something
special perhaps? Not right now. She decided to
just let him be. Her surprises won't work when
RAW ops were going on.
Aysun reached THE RESIDENCY and
checked in at room 334. Everything was pre-
planned. John would meet her there. The
Glock had been retrieved and she would get it
when they met. She bathed and dressed. John
knocked the door. 2 knocks, a pause, then 2
knocks again.
Ram was in close pursuit. He had
followed John for 3 hours. He watched as John
entered room 334. He checked the hotel
records and wondered “Aysun? Who is this?
From Turkey? Strange”. “Time to inform my
superiors”.

  • 8. Editor’s Note Wish you a very warm welcome. We often face problems of being spoken harshly either by our friends, family and relatives. Let me tell you a small story. Once upon a time there lived a farmer who never controlled his tongue and was harsh. One day he insulted his neighbor. Realizing his mistake, he went to the preacher to ask for forgiveness. The preacher told him to take a bag of feathers and drop them in the center of the town. The farmer did as he was told. Then the preacher asked him to go and collect the feathers and put them back in the bag. The farmer tried but couldn’t as the feathers had all blown away. When he returned with empty bag, the preacher said, “The same thing is true about your words. You dropped them rather easily but you cannot retrieve them, so be very careful in choosing your words.” So it is necessary to think as much as you can before you speak. And at times it is much better if we do not speak when not necessary. Because, “Words can only be forgiven and not forgotten.” Shoaib Makki T.J. stmakki3@gmail.com Editor – In – Chief The MAGEX Weekly To submit an article or give content for any field: Email: magexweekly@gmail.com To avail free subscription: Enter your email address in: http://www.mahsabmarketing.com/magazine.html Design and Editing: Shoaib Makki T.J. • 10. UNION BUDGET 2017 – What’s getting cheaper and what’s getting expensive!!! This time around, the budget did not impact the price of commodities and consumer items across the board. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley presented the Union Budget and Railway Budget for 2017-18 in parliament on Wednesday. Here is a list of what gets cheaper and what gets dearer in the new financial year. This time around, the budget did not impact the price of commodities and consumer items across the board. Though the reduced impact on price changes may also be attributed to the GST that is awaiting rollout, GST subsumes nearly all central and state indirect taxes and the government may look to let GST guide the change once it kicks in. Here’s what has got cheap!  Booking train tickets online – No change in train fares and removal of service charge while booking tickets on IRCTC website along with competitive pricing of tickets  RO membrane elements for purifiers for household use  Liquefied natural gas (LNG)  Solar tempered glass used in solar panels– the budget gives a big push on solar energy and assured electricity to all by 2019.  Fuel cell based power generator systems and wind-operated energy generators
  • 11.  Vegetable tanning extracts that are used for tanning leather products  Point of Sale machines card and fingerprint readers  Group insurance for Defence services Here’s what is going to be expensive!  Cigarettes, tobacco, pan masala, bidis, cheroots  LED lamps  Cashew nuts (roasted and salted)  Aluminium ores and concentrates  Polymer coated MS tapes used in manufacturing of optical fibres  Silver coins and medallions The 10 themes highlighted by The Finance Minister * Farmers: For whom we have committed to double their income in five years * Rural population: Providing employment and basic infrastructure * Youth: Energising them through education skills and jobs * Poor and the underprevileged: Strengthening the system of social security and affordable housing * Infrastructure for efficiency, productivity and quality of life * Financial sector: Growth and stability through stronger institutions * Digital economy for speedy accountability and transparency * Public service: Effective governance and efficient service delivery through people’s participation.
  • 12. H1 – B Work visa explained: The ‘What’, ‘Who’ and ‘How’ A Bill aimed at overhauling the work visa program was on Tuesday introduced in the US House of Representatives. The latest work visa reforms, if passed by majority vote in both houses of Congress, will make it harder for those applying for H1-B visas as the minimum wage has been more than doubled, from $60,000 to $130,000. What is the High Skilled Integrity and Fairness Act? Introduced in the lower house by California Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren, the Act will make it mandatory for employers sponsoring H1-B visas for immigrant workers to pay a minimum wage of $130,000, 200 per cent higher than the previous minimum wage of $60,000.
  • 13. Who will be affected? The reforms are being introduced to protect the interests of Americans against the influx of foreign workers in the US job market. US issues 85,000 H1-B visas every year, a sizeable chunk of the applicants are Indians. Indian students migrating to the states for pursuing a higher degree and tech companies that send their workers on off- site projects will be among the most affected by the changes to the visa policy. How will this impact India? The effects of the Act have already been felt in the Indian markets, with share prices of major tech companies plummeting. Infosys, TCS, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and HCL were among those badly hit. The Act could also lead to a decrease in interest in students flocking to American universities, thereby minimizing the brain drain.
  • 14. Will my US visa be rejected? As far as genuine students are concerned, the Act also intends to build a “bridge” from F-1 student status to Lawful Permanent Residence. So visas will not be denied solely on the basis that the applicant intends to immigrate to the US. This applies for those holding O-1 (Extraordinary ability), P (Athletes, Artists and Entertainers) and free trade visa holders. Does President Donald Trump have anything to do with it? Though Trump had advocated for applying curbs on the number of H1-B visas issued annually, he did not sign an executive order, similar to the one on banning immigration from seven majority-Muslim countries. The Bill, however, is likely to be passed as the Republicans control both houses of the Congress — the Senate and House of representatives.

  • 17. Samsung GALAXY X (Fold Phone) You might think the Samsung Edge display is cool, but something cooler is coming very soon. Samsung’s mythical foldable smartphone might actually see the light of day, according to a report from the Korea Herald. The Herald’s source claims that the long- rumoured flexible smartphone will be launched in Q3 (third quarter – July to September) this year, after three years of development. That, however, is dependent on Samsung making a final decision on the device’s “marketability and profitability”, which could mean that it’s never released at all. According to a source that spoke to the Korea Herald, Samsung may roll out more than ‘100,000 units of fold – out devices’ later on this year. This device can reportedly be used as a 7 – inch tablet when unfolded, so it’s unclear it’s meant to be a phone or a tablet. The company is still deliberating to unveil a foldable device this year, and it will wait until its ‘executive – level reshuffle’ – the shuffle has been delayed to February or March as a Samsung executive is currently involved in an alleged bribery scandal involved the frequently – impeached South Korean president.

  • 23. Hong Kong Ditch the shopping malls and skyscrapers and delve into the city’s rich cultural heritage with a visit to one of Hong Kong’s top five temples. Nowhere is better to learn all there is to know about the hopes, dreams, fears and superstitions of this city’s industrious urbanites – especially true during Chinese New Year and important lunar calendar festival dates. While some places of worship have been given a glossy new makeover, many of Hong Kong’s oldest temples have been serving as important community gathering points for hundreds of years.
  • 24. The Five Famous temples in Hong Kong 1. Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple With its bold, red pillars and ornamental latticework, Wong Tai Sin displays all the qualities of the archetypal Taoist Chinese temple. Colorful and noisy, worshipers come year round to pray for good fortune and divine guidance from the “Great Immortal Wong.” Crowds flock here during the Chinese New Year to offer incense, make wishes and visit fortune tellers in hopes of an auspicious and prosperous year to come. Visiting the temple during this time may be interesting from a cultural perspective, but it is certainly not for the faint-hearted. Throngs of people push their way through the winding temple complex in a cloud of smoky incense towards the main altar and gather around stalls selling charms and amulets of all shapes and sizes. It is certainly a once in a lifetime experience, but alternatively, an early morning weekday visit will serve just fine.
  • 25. 2. Chi Lin Nunnery and Lian Garden At Diamond Hill, only one subway stop away from the Wong Tai Sin temple, you’ll find the peaceful and serene Chi Lin Nunnery. In stark contrast to its colorful and brash Taoist neighbor, the Buddhist nunnery exudes calm and tranquility with smooth stone balustrades, lotus ponds and stunning wooden architecture. Inspired by Japanese and Tang Dynasty temples, the elegant series of halls and walkways were constructed without the use of nails, using a complex design of counterweights and dowels. Across the road, the Nan Lian Garden is a scenic oasis amid towering high-rise apartments looming up along the hillside. A relaxing stroll past ancient bonsai trees, koi ponds and meticulously landscaped gardens is the perfect antidote for those needing some time out from the hustle and bustle of the city.
  • 26. 3. Ten Thousand Buddhas Monestery Although calling itself a monastery, the name is a bit of a misnomer as there are no resident monks at this eclectic Sha Tin temple. Follow the steep winding path up the hillside, flanked by 500 life-sized Arhand statues to reach the main complex and its 9-story pagoda. Here you’ll supposedly find more than 13,000 Buddha statues – but at this point, who’s counting? – and a few bodhisattvas on horseback for good measure. The main attraction, however, is the preserved body of Yuet Kai, the monastery’s supremely devout founder. Embalmed in lacquer, plastered with gold leaf and dressed in robes, the upright body currently sits on display in a glass case inside the main monastery building.
  • 27. 4. Man Mo Temple Stepping into the Man Mo Temple on Hollywood Road is like entering another world, a realm inhabited by the venerable deities of Man (God of Literature) and Mo (God of War) who are worshiped here. Rays of sunlight cut through the rising smoke of giant incense coils hanging low from the ceiling and down onto the altars of the 10 judges of the underworld. Make sure to take in all the details – the lines of descending green Shekwan roof tiles represent bamboo and longevity, while the antique sedan chairs inside were used to carry statues of the gods during festival processions.
  • 28. 5. Lam Tsuen Tin Hau Temple & Wishing Trees This quaint collection of villages in Tai Po has been drawing visitors to its Tin Hau Temple and two wishing trees for hundreds of years. Traditionally, festival goers would write their wishes on joss paper and tie it to an orange, which was then tossed up towards one of the banyan tree’s highest boughs – the higher the branch the better the odds of your wish coming true! As the practice became more popular, authorities stepped in to help preserve the trees and visitors are now encouraged to tie wishes to wooden racks nearby instead. Steps away you’ll find a small Tin Hau temple, dedicated to the Goddess of the Sea, which can typically be found in any ancient fishing community in Hong Kong or along the Chinese coastline. Sit down with a fortune teller here if you want to find out about that wish.

He is the most fortunate fanatic of the games. It is not too often, fans remember an umpire very well. One among the sparse is David Shepherd. David Shepherd was born in Devon, England on 27th December, 1940. He played minor counties in England, until he was selected to represent Gloucestershire in 1965. He played until 1979. He was never in contention for the national call, but was a regular in the Gloucestershire XI. He was a fine timer of the ball, as he had to rely on it because of the shape of his body. He made 13 hundreds in his county career. He took to umpiring in 1981. He officiated in a first-class match. Soon he was recognized as one of the fairest umpire in the business. Within two years of officiating in first class match, he was in the umpire panel for the 1983 World Cup. His international umpiring started from 1983 and spanned over 22 years. His first test was in 1985, when he officiated in the fourth Ashes test that year. He kept up the Spirit of the game through all his years. He was never shy of warning players for breaching the rules. He once removed Waqar Younis from bowling in a match, as he bowled two beamers. It was the first of its kind. He was respected by fans and players on and off the field. His round shaped body was very well recognized among cricket fraternity. Shep, as he called by his peers, was a very superstitious person. In cricket, an individual or a team score of 111 or the multiples of the same is termed as ‘Nelson’. It is considered as unfortunate for the batsman or the team. Therefore, he lofts one of his foots from the ground, which he considered to bring good luck for the batsman or the team. He is also known for his signaling. His shake of the hands while signaling fours was mocked by fans all over the world. His ‘out’ signal would display a sense of solidarity. He was the part of the first panel of ICC Elite panel of neutral umpires in 2002. He was given a guard of honor by New Zealand and Australian players when the two countries met in 2005. His last match happened in June 2005, in a match between West Indies and Pakistan. Brian Lara presented him with a bat thanking him for his service towards the game. International Cricket Council paid its tribute to David Shepherd by giving his name for the trophy in the umpire of the year awards as a part of ICC annual awards.
  • 44. Wasim Akram – Concept of Pendulum Define Pendulum. It is defined as a weight suspended from a pivot, so that it can swing freely. Compare the pendulum to a bowler, the pivot as the body, bob as cricket ball and rod as hands. You will probably get to the image of WasimAkram. Thanks to Imran Khan, Akram was one of the prodigies of Imran’s Pakistan in his early days. Akram was there whenever Imran needed him. The impact of Imran Khan was huge in WasimAkram. In every interview, Wasim never forgets to mention Imran. If Imran was the founder of reverse swing, Akram is the greatest exponent of it. To be specific, Akram was a better reverse-swing bowler than a conventional swing bowler. Anyone can swing a cricket ball, why is Akram, the special one? Very few in the history have managed to bowl the out-swing from round the wicket with the control over line and length as good as Akram. In the 1992 World cup, Wasim did the same in the finals against Chris Lewis of England. That was to me, the best wicket for a bowler, bowling from the round the wicket. In a funny note, I would like to share an incident from Akram’s career. Pakistan was playing against Srilanka in Australia for The World Series Cup in 1989. Roshan Mahanama was in strike. Wasim released the ball, wide of the batsman. But, after pitching in off-stump line, the ball went straight to find the batsman's abdomen guard. Mahanama was shaken a bit. Taking few stretches, he was back to face the next ball. It again hit the same spot, to which he was grounded. What makes him even more admirable is that he was diagnosed with diabetes in 1997. He was at the peak of his career. He fought with diabetes and worked even harder and still living fit. After calling it a day in his cricket career, he started to impart his skills to the youngsters. If you ever type swing bowling in youtube, there will be at the least 2-3 videos featuring WasimAkram in the home page. His stint as the Bowling Consultant of Kolkata Knight Riders is a huge bonus to fast bowlers in the KKR camp, eventually Indian Cricket Team, successful products being Mohammed Shami and UmeshYadav. There are many moments in history, where we would have liked to be a part of, but unfortunately we aren't. Watching WasimAkram bowl at his peak form in live was one such thing.
  • 46. ENGINEERING FROM NATURE Imagine a lotus leaf-like surface from which a water drop rolls off automatically and takes along with it any accumulated dust. Nandini Bhandaru of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur has helped turn this vision into reality, developing a water and oil repellent surface which presents a potential low-cost self-cleaning solution for solar cell panel street lights and glass facades in high rise buildings. In the process, she has won Indian Science Congress Association's 'Young Scientist Award' in 'Engineering Science' category for 2017. Bhandaru, who led the research funded by the Centre's Department of Science and Technology along with industry bodies, told ET that these "Nanostructures" can be fabricated on a large scale for less than Rs 100 while machine-made patterns cost Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh for the same area. A nanoparticle is about a thousandth as wide as a human hair. Bhandaru's research is especially relevant in a country like India where dust and dirt often tend to be oily in nature and gets accumulated easily. "Having nanostructure coatings can enormously help in keeping the surfaces clean and even help maintain high efficiency in case of solar cells," Bhandaru said.
  • 47. Street lights are generally at such heights that it is inconvenient to clean them. The dust and deposits reduce the efficiency of the lights. By using this technology, the surface of street lights that gathers dust is altered, making it easier to clean. When water is poured, the dust and deposits effortlessly flow down. Besides, the presence of nanostructures can alter the property of the solar street lights by making them antireflective. The solar lights currently mostly reflect and absorb solar light, according to Bhandaru. The Bhandaru led group is also engaged in developing Oleophobic or oil repellent anti-fingerprint surfaces, which can be used widely in touch screen devices. The key focus of its research is on developing solutions at nanoscale which find wide application in areas such as electronic devices, data storage media, optoelectronic devices and cancer therapeutics. "The gravity is the most important force, but in the nano world this has no role. Hence it is easier to change properties completely at nanoscale," Bhandaru said. Most of the products developed by the group have been patented and the group is now working to scale up the techniques for industrial collaborations and product manufacturing. T. MADHANAGOPAL
  • 48. As she reached the start of the road, she sensed herself getting more alert. Her thoughts of getting home soon were overshadowed by her urge for safety. Something about the road felt wrong. Edison Road seemed very dull amidst the city that cheered every person easily by its looks. Partially broken branches hung from the trees giving an eerie look to the already drab environment. Densely packed trees concealed every little inch of land on either side of the road. The road was very rarely in use, making maintenance a non- mandatory phenomenon. Dry leaves covered the road partially, causing dry friction against her tyres, evident from the gentle hiss that originated. Street lights were obviously unnecessary on such a stretch. But the road transport department had made it a point to place street lights every 100 meter. The low-range street lights alternated with dull areas making it a perfect location to shoot horror movies. To add to her woes, the penultimate day also turned out to be a full moon day. Spooky! That was the only word that Aaradhana could come up with. She had covered about 3 Kilometer when her eyes suddenly spotted a man standing very close to the centre of the road. He was holding a stick taller than him on his right hand, its bottom end touching the road. She could not tell if he was lean or stout, because he seemed to be covered by a blanket. She was not sure if she should stop near him. Little sweat beads rolled over her fair skin. She felt her grip on the throttle loosen. She was not in complete control of herself. She felt her fear engulf her with all its might. For a split second, she considered taking a U-Turn and going back. Gathering courage from every part of her body, she raised the throttle as she whizzed past the man. It was after all, a scare crow. The fact that it was not someone who might have harmed her must have obviously calmed her nerves, but it did not. Her fear increased instead. She could feel her blood pressure rise with every meter she crossed. Aaradhana had crossed the first 5 kilometer when she suddenly felt the vibration from her bike getting reduced. She checked the fuel level indicator. The dial was very much near to the “E” mark. Oh! Not now. She had to get fuel somehow to power her bike on. Though she was not very much familiar with that part of the city, she knew that the nearest fuel station was 500 meter away. She took out her water bottle, drank it empty, locked her bike and started walking to the fuel station with the empty bottle. She reached the fuel station 10 minutes later. She had not met a single human being in the past 30 minutes and the sudden appearance of human beings before her totally stressed her brain. She went straight to the fuel filling lot without even looking at the people there. Suddenly she heard something being dropped and it ran chills through her spine. She filled the fuel as fast as she could and started walking back to her bike. To be continued… Chakara Rajan M.
  • 49. CATHERINE & DHRUV Episode 1 Chapter 4 July 19th, 2009 : Aysun was 23 then. She was visiting Chennai for the very first time. She had trusted the locals. She had been pure and innocent. Chennai had raped her. Her integrity, destroyed. Her reputation, destroyed. She was raped physically and mentally. The locals hadn't supported her, the police, neither. Her life had never been the same ever since. Now, she was here to return the favor. She was here to rape Chennai. Dhruv reached home by 7A.M. Catherine hugged him as soon as she opened the door. Every single time she saw Dhruv was a gift. She knew how many of Dhruv's coworkers had been martyred. She remembered Ram often. They were pretty close. His death was shrouded in mystery. Details were hushed up. All she knew was that he was killed and buried. She kissed Dhruv's forehead and ushered him inside. She held his hand and thanked Jesus. One of the most irritating aspects of working in RAW was that Dhruv couldn't divulge any details to anyone. Even to Catherine. Anyone might be watching. Dhruv had seen Ram at the airport. How could he not recognize that face? His closest buddy wasn't dead. That was news to celebrate, if there weren't bigger matters in his hands. Catherine sensed Dhruv's restlessness. Blue saree won't work this time. Something special perhaps? Not right now. She decided to just let him be. Her surprises won't work when RAW ops were going on. Aysun reached THE RESIDENCY and checked in at room 334. Everything was pre- planned. John would meet her there. The Glock had been retrieved and she would get it when they met. She bathed and dressed. John knocked the door. 2 knocks, a pause, then 2 knocks again. Ram was in close pursuit. He had followed John for 3 hours. He watched as John entered room 334. He checked the hotel records and wondered “Aysun? Who is this? From Turkey? Strange”. “Time to inform my superiors”. To be continued… Arvind Srinivasan
