The Learning Environment and Academic
Performance of the students in
University of Mindanao
Rationale
Learning environment is a critical part of effective and successful instruction. Effective
classroom management, which initiates with well-organized and efficient lesson planning
preparation, helps a teacher to teach and students to learn. Students perform well in an
optimistic classroom atmosphere and an environment in which they feel welcome. From
a student point of view, effective and successful classroom management provides
students with opportunities to socialize while learning interesting content. From a teacher
point of view, effective classroom management involves preventive discipline and
interesting instruction (Lang and Hebert, 1995).
Thesis Statement:
This study aimed to determined the profile of learning environment and the Academic
performance of the students.
Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:
1. What is the profile of the learning environment of the students in terms of:
1-1. Learning resources, and
1-2. Learning support
Thesis Statement:
2. What is the level of academic performance of the students in University of Mindanao?
3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the learning environment and the
academic performance of the students?
Review of Related Literature
Karemera (2003) concludes that students performance is significantly associated with satisfaction with academic
environment and the facilities like the books of the library, computer lab and many more in the institute. Robert
Sampson found that a proper use of facilities provided by the institution to the student is a good match between
students learning style and would improve their academic performance.
Hannah,(2013) The classroom still remains to be the main learning
environment in the schools although learning can take place in other venues. On this
premise, it is imperative that educators strive to make the classroom the best venue for
students to attain their full potential in academic performance.of the learning environment and the academic
performance of the students?
Learning Resources
According to Pianta, Steinberg and Rollins (1995) The quality of the interactions that
students have with their teacher predicts later academic success. The Classroom
Attributes such as the interaction of a students to his/her classmates, the relationship
of the students and the teacher, the rules and regulation inside the classroom, the
behavioral status of a students, and classroom beliefs all influence of the development
academic performance of students. Because of the part of attributes it influence the
students to do better in their academic features that will lead them to the academic
success and through this attributes inside the classroom the students would be gain
more knowledge and good behavioral attitude because the students encourage to be a
good model to his/her companions and still motivated to achieve the goal of academic
success.
Learning Resources
Learning Support
According to Pianta’s (1995) Teacher and students relationship theory posits that
teacher shape students experience in school having penetrated the traditional teaching
method / stratigles of a professional teacher in terms of the academic skills of the
students, Teacher recondition the students activity level, teachers teach the students
communication skills on how to interact other people, Provide a behavioural support to
guide students and teach a coping skills to easily understand the lessons.
Through this learning support that the teacher must provide to the students, the
relationship pf the teacher and his/her students would be easily grow and the student
would be motivated because of the learning methods / strategies that the teacher has
been provided and through this the academic performance of a students would be
more admirable and this kind of students can be a benevolent model to others and
serve the students for a better academic performance.
A research by Sunday, A.A. (2012) the result indicated that students with
adequate laboratory facilities in students perform better than those in school
with less or without facilities, this simply because laboratory forms part of
enrich the physical school environment. It was also discovered that poor
facilities and inadequate space, as well as the arrangement of items including
seats in the classroom, library and laboratory, would affect the organisation of
learning environment.
Learning Support
Learning support
Denial, K.K. Felix, K. (2014) examined the impact of the school environment and peer influence
on the students’ academic performance. The study assessed school environment factors and
peer influence in term of the level of psychological impact they have on learners.
Learning Support
A research by Sunday, A.A. (2012) revealed that there is a significant
relationship between physical school environment and students’ academic
performance in University. To him, the physical school environment has some
influences on students’ academic achievement in University. The physical
facilities, human resources, and the relationship among them determine the
physical environment of the school.
