The Kitanemuk tribe lives in the Tehachapi Mountains of California. They eat acorns and pine nuts for food. Women wear aprons with red yarn while men and everyone wears basket hats. They live in lodges made of pine logs or brush structures. They have religious ceremonies led by their leader and mourn the dead for five days of silence.

oak or they eat some delicious pinion pine
nuts…Yummy!

 The Men on the other hand wear loin clothes
 EVERYONE wears basket hats

5.  The Kitanemuk Live in lodges of Pinion logs or
domed poles and brush wikiups. Sounds like
my kind of home!

6. The Kitanemuk believed that each person had
their own guardian spirit (an animal or a
mountain). That was envisioned as a youth.
They believed everything on earth was from
something earlier. And that a deer going wild
(for example) means that something fatal is
going to happen in the near future

7.  The Kitanemuk always told tales, myths,
legends etc. or even tales from other members
past histories.

8.  The Kitanemuk had religious ceremonies
where they would get together with the leader
and learn of their future etc.
 Another tradition, is where they would mourn
the person who died for 5 days straight of
silence.

9.  The Kitanemuk made basketry
 They also made ceremonial graves and
horseshoed shaped cloth, which they lay the
bodies’ ashes in.

missionary explorer named Francisco Garees in
1776. He took some back for a Spanish Mission
