The document analyzes music videos from two 1980s bands, The Jam and The Bitterest Pill. It summarizes some of the shots in the videos, including close-ups of band members performing and long shots showing all members. It notes that the second video mixed performance and narrative shots better to tell a more interesting story, while the first video repeated shots with little variety.
This is a storyboard of are music video project before filming it is all due to change afterwards although we are hoping to stick to it as much as possible
1. The Jam Analysis
Looking at fellow 80’s band The Jam
as they appeal to a similar fan base
and have a similar genre.
2. Town Called Malice
This shot shows a band
member playing the guitar
in a close up shot.
This second still from the video
shows a long shot of all the band
members in a performance shot.
This is a shot they use often
throughout the video and is a low
angle close up of the lead singer
performing. There is very little in
the way of narrative shots.
Although a lot of the shots were repeated and there wasn’t much variety I feel I saw and learned a few things
from this video which I could suggest to the group when we come to film. Things like the second picture in
which all the band members are seen.
3. The Bitterest Pill
This video opens with a tracking
shot of an old looking room, there
are no lyrics at this point so it isn’t
related to them yet.
There is mid shot of the lead singer
performing however this has more of a
narrative feel than the previous video as he
isn’t with his other band members and isn’t
in a plain room this time.
This is a close up narrative shot
and shows a man and woman
kissing close together. The shot
lasts for about 5 seconds before
zooming out.
This video showed better how performance and narrative can be mixed to create
a more interesting story.
