The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. MAN’S ORIGIN AND FITRAH
1) Definition of fitrah :
• The word fitrah comes from the Arabic radicals’ fa ta ra
(verb).
• Literal meaning: creation; the causing a thing to exist
for the first time.
• Technical meaning:
i. Man has been born as a believer in Allah the Almighty
(30:30). It is the natural tendency for human to believe
in Allah regardless of their belief including the atheist.
ii. Man comes to this world without any stain of sin.
3. MAN
• Man is the creation of Allah that made up of two
elements which are physical body and the spirit.
(Dual nature)
• Physical body represents clay. It is mortal.
• The spirit is something that immortal that leaves
body upon death of an individual.
• Man is the creature who needs resources of the
material world for his personal growth and social
fulfilment.
4. THE ORIGIN OF MAN
Al-Baqarah 2:30:
• Allah said to His angels that He wanted to create a being that made of clay.
• The angels asked why Allah would create another creation that will shed blood and
corrupt when they are there to glorify Allah.
• They were not questioning. But, they were asking to seek knowledge. They were
confused.
• The angels did not understand the reason behind creating another creation when
they are going to shed blood and corrupt.
• God did not explain that to them because they will not understand until they see.
• So all Allah said was this; “ I know which you just do not know”
• So Allah created Adam a.s.
5. THE CREATION OF MAN IN
ISLAM
1. The creation of Adam a.s (the first human being that Allah created).
[There were some water added to that clay]
Dust/ Soil Clay Clay turned into dark and black
Allah blew the soul Allah fashioned it into the form of
human being.
• Mentioned by Allah in Quran (32:7) , (38:71-72).
6. 2. The creation of Adam’s children
Allah placed the sperm drop in woman’s womb.
Allah made the drop into an alaqah. (blood clot)
Allah changed the alaqah into a lump.
Allah made out of the lump into bones.
And covered it up with flesh.
Grow and come into being and attain the human’s form.
Allah will blow the soul into that body.
• Quran (23: 12- 14)
7. MAN’S POSITION AND ROLE ON
EARTH
• Man is the best creation of Allah theAlmighty.
“We have indeed created man in the best of moulds”
(95:4).
We have honoured the sons of Adam; provided them
transport on land and sea; given them for sustenance
things good and pure; and conferred on them special
favours above a great part of our creation (17:70).
9. i) SERVANTS OF ALLAH
• ‘IbḖdullḖh / ʿabdu llāh = God’s servant
• Everything exist for purpose i.e : water for the land,
land for plants, plants for animal, animal for human
and human for….?
• Question : For whom does man live and work?
• Answer : Man is created for Allah, to know and
worship Him
11. ▪ Worshipping Allah alone is the ultimate purpose.
▪ Allah is the Creator of man who created, granted us live with numerous
bounties.
▪ Thus, man is indebted to his creator which leads us to total submission and
obedience towards Him.
▪ It is illogical, disgraceful, prohibited for man to worship His creatures : the
sun, the moon, the star, the spirits, the idols (shirk).
▪ The servant of Allah is different from other creations because the word
ʿabdu llāh implies the satisfaction of God by our deeds and qualities.
▪ In Surah al-Furqan 63 – 77 Allah describes 13 unique qualities which raise a
human being from the level of ordinary creation.
12. “And the servants of (Allah)
Most Gracious are those: Who…..
1. Walk on
earth with
humility
2. Response to
the ignorant
with ‘peace’
3. Spend
nights in
worship
4. Ask safety
from hellfire
5. Spend
money wisely
6. Do not
make partners
with God
13. 7. Do not kill
without reason
8. Do not commit
adultery
9. Do not witness
any falsehood
10. Do not drop
deaf & blind on the
signs of God
11. Pray for
righteous wives /
husbands &
children
14. 12. Wish to be
the leaders of the
pious believers
13. Patient &
consistent
15. ii) Prophets / Messengers
1) The concept of nubuwwah.
i. The word ‘Nabi’ derived from ‘Naba’ = to inform
ii. The word 'Rasul’ is derived from 'Risalat'
• ‘Risalat' = to send; and 'Rasul' = one who is sent.
• Allah created man for a noble purpose: to worship Him and
lead a virtuous life based on His teachings and guidance.
• Allah had chosen from every nation a prophet or more to
convey His Message to people.
16. The Difference between Nabi and
Rasul
• The words ‘Nabi’ and ‘Rasul’ are used interchangeably in the Qur’an.
• The same person sometimes called as Nabi & sometimes as Rasul.
• The prophet has 2 capacities:
i. Rasul : the Messenger of Allah who is given with a new Shariah (Law),
commanded by Allah to deliver to all mankind.
ii. Nabi : the Prophet of Allah who has given revelation or news concerning
themselves or their communities.
• Rasul is also a Nabi, but Nabi may not necessarily be a Rasul.
• A prophet is always a Nabi by birth, but a prophet become Rasul when he
officially receives the message and declares it : Prophet Muhammad SAW
• Rasul is higher in rank than nabi because the Rasul brings a divine legislation
with him.
17. • Numerous prophets were sent down by Allah (one was sent down to every
community to ensure that all receive the message and thus cannot claim
ignorance on the Day of Judgement – it is only fair)
•The Quran mentions the names of 25 prophets and indicates there were
others. It says:
“Of some messengers We have already told you the story; of others We have
not; - and to Moses God spoke direct.”
(An-Nisa: 164)
18. Books of Allah
• Tawrat – sent to Prophet Musa (Moses), peace be
upon him.
• Zabur – sent to Prohet Daud (David), peace be
upon him.
• Injeel – sent to Prophet Isa (Jesus), peace be upon
him.
• Al-Quran – sent to Prophet Muhammad, peace be
upon him.
19. • To be role model to human
• To convey divine message to the people
• To explain the divine to the people
• To correct people’s wrong doings
• To act as a role model – qudwatun hasanah
“Surely there was a good example for you in the Messenger ofAllah, for all
those who look forward to Allah and the Last Day and remember Allah much.”
(SurahAl-Ahzab:21)
20. Relevance to Man’s Life
1) It is the second primary source of Islam
The Prophet (SAW) said :
“ I have left you with two things. You will never get astray so long as you remain
attached to them; i.e. the Holy Quran and my Sunnah”
2) The Prophet never told any lies.Whatever he said is revelation from Allah (SWT).
“Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. It is not but a revelation revealed.”
[Quran 53:3-4]
3) Obedience to the Prophet is obedience to Allah and disobedience to him considered
disobedience to Allah
“ He who obeys the Messenger, obeys Allah; but if any turn away,We have not sent thee to
watch over their. (evil deeds)”
Surah An-Nisa: 80
21. The Termination of Nubuwwah
“Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but he
is the messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets; and
Allah is Aware of all things.”
[Surah Al-Ahzab: 40]
22. • Prophets are necessary for conveyingAllah's instructions and
guidance to mankind.
• We have no way of knowing why we were created if there is no
messenger.
• Questions about God, angels, paradise, hell, etc. cannot be
answered without revelation from the Creator and Knower of
the unseen.
• Those answers must be authentic and must be brought by
individuals whom we trust and respect. That is why,
messengers are the select of their societies in terms of moral
conduct and intellectual ability.
23. iii) KHALIFAH AL-ARL (Vicegerents of the
Earth)
Definition :
• Khalifah is an Arabic word derived from the root word Kha La
Fa
• In English called as Caliph or vicegerents.
• Literally, it means to succeed or to replace a person due to his
absence, death or as an honour to the successor.
• Technically, it is used to describe a representative of the Earth
or a successor to Prophet’s position as the political, military, and
administrative leader of the Muslims.
24. And (mention, O Muhammad), when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I
will make upon the earth a successive authority."They said, "WillYou place
upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare
Your praise and sanctifyYou?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do
not know.”
(Al-Baqarah: 30)
25. Why Allah choose Man as a Khalifah ?
1) Man has the ability to learn
• Man was created with brain and intellectual to learn
and think about the surrounding of his life.
• Man has potential to use his intellect that will
change the world to a better place to live.
• Knowledge i.e: tauhid, ibadah,law and science.
• Unlike animal, they do not have capability to think
but they have desire.
26. And He taught Adam the Names, all of them, then presented them to
the angels and said, “Tell me the names of these, if you are truthful.”
(Al-Baqarah: 31)
27. 2) Man has freedom to choose
• Be able to choose and making their own decision.
• Man has the capability to identify between right
and wrong action.
• It depends on them to choose whether they want to
follow their iman or their lust.
• Contradict with angels which always follow Allah’s
commandments.
28. IndeedWe have guided him to the way ,
be he grateful or ungrateful.
(Al-Insan: 3)
29. 3) Man Has Ability to Construct
• With knowledge, man can construct and improve the
condition of the Earth that suits with their needs.
• Man has numerous skills that can be polished to
administer the world.
• Man has to work hard to achieve the stage of
civilization.
• Muslims should be more competitive with non-Muslims
to regulate this world.
30. It is He who has made you successors on the earth, and raised some of
you in rank above others so that He may test you in respect to what He
has given you. Indeed your Lord is swift in retribution, and indeed He is
all-forgiving, all-merciful.
(Al-An’am: 165)
31. Duties as a Khalifah
1) To develop divine attributes in himself
• Man has to follow Allah’s commandments as been told in Quran
2) To institute peace and assurance of the community
• Provide an organized system of administration in a country, society
will be in well-ordered.
3) To implement the Law (Shariah) of Allah
• Practice the divine law that is complete and comprehensive to the
society such as hudud, qisas, diyat and takzir.
4) To manage and develop the earth
