6. Packet switching
Method of transmitting data thru variety of different paths
User is billed by the data packets sent and;
Not the route or distance traveled (as opposed to circuit-
switching in leased/ dedicated phone lines)
Eliminates need for expensive dedicated lines
The Internet is a packet-switched network.
i.e.; Transmissions can route anywhere without regard to
distance.
In packet switching, the source and destination are
known, but the path automatically changes (it is variable).
