This document summarizes research into the impact of information technology (IT) on life satisfaction. Regression analysis of surveys in 39 countries and the UK found that IT has a direct, positive impact on life satisfaction, even after controlling for other factors. Qualitative interviews revealed that IT increases a sense of freedom and control, improving well-being. The benefits are greatest for disadvantaged groups and new IT users. Social uses of IT, like social networking, enhance life satisfaction by facilitating social contact. Overall, the research finds that increasing access to IT can significantly improve life satisfaction, particularly for disadvantaged groups.
