Moreover, uses such as conducting research work and entertainment have become popular over time. Nevertheless, it is important to ensure that people do not rely too much on technological devices. Despite its significant integration into people’s lives, the overuse of technology can have some adverse effects on individuals and the societyFirst, overusing technology hinders the development of cognitive processes. According to Hatch (19), it affects development of the brain especially among children and adolescents and can cause CPA (Continuous Partial Attention) condition. Giving internet access freely to young children without adult supervision/consent can put themselves and family at risk of internet stalkers, child predators, cyber bullying, and identity theft. As stated, “Parental monitoring of children’s media influences children’s sleeping habits, school routine, social and aggressive behaviors, and that these impacts are reconciled through the amount of time spent watching and contact with media violence. Parental monitoring of media has defensive impact on a wide variety of academic, social, and physical child habits.” Doing my research, I learned that a lot of parents give internet access freely to their child and don’t think about the effects it will have on their developmental skills and health.

The role of technology is increasing in various spheres of life and children have not been left behind as it plays a critical role in their lives. As globalization takes place, many early childhood education systems are developing a curriculum geared towards imparting tech skills for improved communication using digital devices to enhance their thinking. Besides, it is crucial to explore the relationship between technologies, emotions and resultant behaviors of toddlers since the amount of time they spent online has increased significantly. However, the digital environment exposes the children to vices such as cyberbullying that threatens to ruin the good reputation that the internet is offering to kids. Monitoring toddlers and technology is a significant process because it ensures that children gain new skills, improve their internet cognition, and are protected from cyberbullying.
Accordingly, technology plays a critical role in the development of new skills for children in their early years of development. In the article, “The Right Technology for Kids at Every Age,” Tahnk asserts that each baby development milestone is presently accompanied by technological aspects such as smartphones which helps to recognize the ways in which digital tools can be embedded in the minds of toddlers that helps to form ideas on literacy useful in the later stages of life (1). She declares that “if you a parent, you will be anxious to document a baby’s first steps, smiles, and as the toddlers start or go on with schooling, they already have an extensive understanding of comprehending meaningful interpretations of digital tools” (Tahnk, 1). Equally, Radesky in his article, “Mobile and Interactive Media Use by Young Children: The Good, the Bad, and the Unknown,” reports that most toddlers aged three to five years have access to a technological device in their homes and understand how to access information online (2). He found out that “most of the households that have toddlers have access to tablets which exposes the children to technology allowing them to learn new skills daily” (Radesky, 2). Thus, access to technology is allowing toddlers to learn new skills in a monitored environment in the home and school setting.

Since the introduction of electronic devices, the world has shifted into a new technological era with great assistance from the development of the internet. The technology then became more portable and commercial, which made the mechanisms more accessible, affordable and evidently more desirable. The popularity of these internet associated devices rose quickly and still continue to rise, as it becomes the norm for individuals to own at least one electronic device. The purpose of these devices it to assist with an individual’s daily task along with many more possibilities, and because of its influential power, questions like how it affected with the development of humans in the modern era begin to surface.
The purpose of this study is to discover how the interactions and communications between humans have evolved since the involvement of internet and electronic technology. This topic has peaked interest of many researchers, and popular themes concerning the topic includes relationships and intimacy between individuals via the internet from computers and phones. Some previous research that has been chosen to be used as references all follow along a similar pattern, regarding the sample size and diversity, methodology, and theoretical influences.
One method that is popular to the researchers in the field of sociology is known as Ethnography, which is “the systematic description of human behaviour and organizational culture based on first-hand observation” (Howard, 2002, p.553). But because of the new technological advancement, using such a traditional procedure may be unable to fully analyze the subject. One research decided to adapt to the technologic subject and develop a different form of Ethnography to accommodate any flaws the tradition method had; the new methodology is called Network Ethnography.
Network ethnography involves with passive or active observation, extended immersion, and in-depth interviews, following the processes of ethnographical research methods. The contribution Network ethnography provides is that it does not limit the researcher into choosing territorial field sites, but also has the opportunity to select multiple social networks as field sites.
Another reason why they believe Network Ethnography is a valid method of examining social behaviour and different technological mediums is that a researcher can manage sample bias whether it be extreme, snowball or any other sampling method. Although there is ongoing discussion about the ways and means of measuring the size of the gap, both in the U.S. and worldwide, generally the indicators of availability, access and utilization of Communications Technologies (ICTs) and the ICT Development Index (IDI)1 are used in research to determine the "gap between individuals, households, businesses and geographic areas at different socio-economic levels with regard both to their opportunities to access information and communication technologies and to their use of the Internet for a wide variety of activities” (Understanding the Digital Divide, 2001).
