SIGNIFICANT IMPLICATION
NOLLYWOOD MOVIES
Nollywood, a term coined following the style of Hollywood drew
inspiration from the US film industry Hollywood) and Bollywood
( the Indian film industry), is the generic name for the Nigerian
Film industry. The global attention currently enjoyed by
Nollywood is due to efforts to create a distinct film tradition.
Started out of performing Arts some 40 years ago and its ONE OF
THE LARGEST in the world, SOME MOVIE PUNDITS CLAIM IT’S
THE SECOND LARGEST MOVIE INDUSTRY IN THE WORLD.
DOMINANCE: it is a condition that exists when one person or
group has power over another. For instance, Nollywood movies in
general is believed to dominate West Africa

FACTORS
REGIONAL INTEGRATION
LARGER POPULATION
BIGGER ECONOMY
INVESTMENT
CREATIVITY
GOVERNMENTAL SUPPORT
The Nigerian government has contributed very little to the growth
of this industry in terms of funding or the provision of a favorable
environment.
Thus far, the industry has advanced by virtue of individual efforts of
dominant producers and marketers. Although Nigerian films have
been viewed as cultural products of the nation, the indifference of
the government toward the industry has denied it the status of a
foreign exchange cultural currency that enhances the industry and
the government itself.
GHANA’S CULTURE AND MOVIE INDUSTRY
E.B Taylor defined culture as “ that Complex whole
which includes KNOWLEDGE, BELIEF, ART, MORALS,
LAWS, CUSTOMS, and many other capabilities and habit
acquired by members of society”
Culture means the total body of tradition borne by a
society and transmitted from generations to
generation. It does refer to the norms, values, standards
by which people act, and includes the distinctive
attributes of every society
Ghana’s culture is largely hinged on our tradition, language, music,
dance, clothing and festivals. Culture plays a major role in the
growth and development of the Ghanaian economy. Especially
through our Arts Shelter and entertainments. Our culture is also made
up of number of products and services which involves visual
performance, Literary and other creative activities.
Over the years Ghanaian movies have portrayed the Ghanaian cultural
values and has served as a representation of our cultural identity.
GHANA FILM INDUSTRY
CORPORATION (GFIC)
Ghana was once a leader when it comes to movie production in the sub
region of West Africa. Especially in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1948 , the
Gold Coast Film Unit was set up within the Information Services
Department ISD. Shortly After Independence Dr. Kwame Nkrumah
created the State Film Industry which later became the GHANA FILM
INDUSTRY CORPORATION (GFIC). Nkrumah built the very first
complete Film facility which then included the Information Services
Department Unit.
In the early days of filmmakers Stalwarts:
Rev. Hesse Tom Riberto
R.A. fenuku
Some of the early movies include;
EARLY MOVIES THAT PORTRAYED
OUR CULTURE
“Dede” (the very first starring video movie)
I Told You So
The Road to Kukurantumi
A Stab in the Dark
Baby Thief
Kanana
IMPLICATIONS
It is obvious that the emergence of Nollywood
movies in Ghana has dire consequences on our Culture,

Language
Music
Clothing
Transportation (Okada)
Food
ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION: Many movie experts believe that Ghana’s Movie industry
Could progressively generate and contribute to our GDP, thus Gross Domestic Product.
However, the infiltration of Nollywood movies in Ghana has rather caused and impeded
the Ghana movie industry
INTEREST IN BROADCASTING NOLLYWOOD MOVIES BY GHANA’S TELEVISION
Over the years there has been growing interest of the Ghana’s Television in showing
Nollywood movies as compared to that of Ghanaian films this has also stimulated the
The Negative implication on our culture.
EMPLOYMENT: This could be said to be a positive effect because through Nollywood
Movies, workers in the creative industry in Ghana collaborate with their Nigerian
Counterpart to produce movies. Moreover movie vendors in Ghana capitalize on the
mass production of Nollywood movies in Ghana ,
Culture is dynamic therefore, the infiltration of Nollywood
movies in Ghana should be used to improve or develop
ourselves while maintaining our indigenous Ghanaian culture.
The argument has always been made that Ghana seems to
adopt the hybrid social systems where there is an appreciable
Level of inculcating other cultures into our social system. The
need to maintain and invest in the Ghanaian movie industry
cannot be Over-emphasised.
