Climate Change Impacts: Where Does India Stand on Climate Change?
India is susceptible to natural calamities as the aftermath of climate change like warming temperatures and cyclones have
aggravated in recent times. Moreover, human activities are responsible for social climate change impact, which play a huge
role in destroying the ecology. Let us take a closer look at the current state of India's ecological and climate change impacts
and the progress that India has made to mitigate climate change impacts.
How Has The Climate Change Affected Indian Cities?
In India, there is a constant rise in land air surface temperatures. As a result, extreme weather has led to natural calamities,
resulting in increased occurrences of cyclones. Due to this, there has also been a rise in the population shift.
As per the Global Climate Risk Index, India stands in the seventh position on the list of countries most affected by climate
change.
While many measures have been taken positively, India's climate efforts are widely seen as far from the drastic measures
needed to respond to the climate emergency.
India is one of the top five countries worldwide, where the exposure to pollutants in the air has increased, leading to a rise in
deaths due to air pollution.
The rapid changes in India's climate causes:
Additionally, there is an impact on our natural ecosystems, agricultural output, and freshwater resources with escalating
damage to infrastructure. These signify serious consequences for biodiversity, food, water and energy security, and public
health.
Changes in the monsoon and its knock-on effects are perhaps the country's most important areas of concern. For example,
increasing extreme droughts are detrimental to groundwater recharge. On the other hand, disproportionate rainfall tends to
wash away fertile topsoil as run-off instead of seeping into the groundwater.
To mitigate the severity of climate change impacts, the Government of India has set up large-scale clean energy projects.
the severity of climate change impacts
Coming to the Indian Himalayan ranges, climate change has tremendously impacted the cryosphere, hazarding our
agriculture and ecosystems. A rise in temperature trend over the Himalayan Ranges and future projections show significant
warming. Snow cover has reduced since the 1960s, with an enhanced decreasing trend during the 1990s and varying trends
since 2000. Glaciers have lost mass at varying rates since the early 20th century, except for one region. There is an
observation of the heterogeneous response of glaciers to global warming regulated by regional deviations in topography,
debris cover, circulation, and rainfall. Extreme floods represent the most frequent natural disaster in the Himalayas. Research
has highlighted the momentous threat from glacial lakes -landslides integrated with grave rain and flooding, with flawed land-
use practices such as road-cutting and deforestation being additional drivers. Climate change has also emphasized
traditional subsistence in farming and food systems. Improving systematic and coordinated monitoring of climate and
related impacts is crucial for effective climate change adaptation and response strategies.
