Irradiance-adaptive PV Module Integrated Converter for High Efficiency and Po...Asoka Technologies
The strive for efficient and cost-effective photovoltaic systems motivated the power electronic design developed here. The work resulted in a DC-DC converter for module integration and distributed maximum power point tracking (MPPT) with a novel adaptive control scheme. The latter is essential for the combined features of high energy efficiency and high power quality over a wide range of operating conditions. The switching frequency is optimally modulated as a function of solar irradiance for power conversion efficiency maximization. With the rise of irradiance, the frequency is reduced to reach the conversion efficiency target. A search algorithm is developed to determine the optimal switching frequency step. Reducing the switching frequency may, however, compromise MPPT efficiency. Furthermore, it leads to increased ripple content. Therefore, to achieve a uniform high power quality at all conditions, interleaved converter cells are adaptively activated. The overall cost is kept low by selecting components that allow for implementing the functions at low cost. Simulation results show the high value of the module integrated converter for DC standalone and microgrid applications. A 400 W prototype was implemented at 0.14 Euro/W. Testing showed efficiencies above 95% taking into account all losses from power conversion, MPPT, and measurement and control circuitry.
Grid Tied Solar Micro-Converter with Optimizer Mode Operation for Weak-Grid O...IRJET Journal
This document summarizes a research paper that proposes a grid-tied solar micro-converter design that can operate in both grid-tied and island modes. It uses a double-mode flyback converter that can maximize power extraction from solar PV panels continuously in both modes. The converter aims to draw smooth input current with reduced filter size. Its ability to produce both DC and AC output provides flexibility when the grid may not be available for up to 80% of sunlight hours, while maintaining benefits of microinverters. Simulation results show the converter output in island and grid-tied modes matches simulation and hardware test results. The conclusion states this design is suitable for developing countries with weak grids by extracting maximum power from solar while supporting variable and bidirectional
Single-Stage Power-Factor-Correction Circuit with Flyback Converter to Drive ...Asoka Technologies
White light emitting diode (LED) with high brightness has attracted a lot of attention from both
industry and academia for its high efficiency, ease to drive, environmental friendliness, and long
lifespan. They become possible applications to replace the incandescent bulbs and fluorescent
lamps in residential, industrial and commercial lighting. The realization of this new lighting
source requires both tight LED voltage regulation and high power factor as well. This paper
proposed a single-stage flyback converter for the LED lighting applications and input power
factor correction. A type-II compensator has been inserted in the voltage loop providing
sufficient bandwidth and stable phase margin. The flyback converter is controlled with voltage
mode pulse width modulation (PWM) and run in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) so that
the inductor current follows the rectified input voltage, resulting in high power factor. A
prototype topology of closed-loop, single stage flyback converter for LED driver circuit designed
for an 18W LED lighting source is constructed and tested to verify the theoretical predictions.
The measured performance of the LED lighting fixture can achieve a high power factor greater
than 0.998 and a low total harmonic distortion less than 5.0%. Experimental results show the
functionality of the overall system and prove it to be an effective solution for the new lighting
applications.

The document provides the circuit diagram, operating principles, design considerations, and experimental results validating the performance of the proposed LED driver.
Power GaN 2017: Epitaxy, Devices, Applications, and Technology Trends 2017 Re...Yole Developpement
The GaN power device supply chain is acting to support market growth.
THE SUPPLY CHAIN FOR POWER GAN PREPARES FOR PRODUCTION
The supply chain is close to being settle for the Power GaN market and deals during 2017 show confidence that GaN will be a successful market. First of all, there have been big investments from the main foundries to increase their capacity to handle mass production. Navitas just announced the partnership with TSMC and Amkor to ramp production capacity. Moreover, BMW i Ventures has just invested in GaN Systems. The Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs is also interested in using GaN for clean and green technologies, also in collaboration with GaN Systems.
GaN manufacturers continue developing new products and provide samples to customers, as is the case with EPC and its wireless charging line. During 2017, Panasonic announced the mass production of its 650 V products and Exagan successfully produced its first high voltage devices on 8-inch wafers. Other players are in the final phase of R&D or qualification for their GaN products to be launched in 2018. In both cases, manufacturers and clients are pushing to use GaN HEMTs in emerging technologies.
Yole Développement differentiates the Power GaN supply chain into two main models: the Integrated Device Manufacturer (IDM) model and the foundry model. We think that both IDM and foundry models will co-exist while there are different needs on the market, for example in consumer and industrial applications. In addition to the existing models, China is introducing a model with an R&D research center or design center, an external epitaxial supplier and a foundry for manufacturing, to support large-scale demand in the future.
This report furnishes an overview of the GaN power industry, covering the value chain from epitaxy and device design to device processing. It updates the supply chain and there is an overview of the year’s investments.

Artificial Neural Network based Dynamic Voltage Restorer for Improvement of P...Asoka Technologies
This document discusses using an artificial neural network controller for a dynamic voltage restorer to improve power quality. It proposes an ANN-based controller to enhance the restoration and harmonics suppression capabilities of DVRs compared to PID and fuzzy logic controllers. Simulation results show the ANN controller mitigates voltage sags while reducing total harmonic distortion to just 13.5%, outperforming the other controllers. Contact information is provided for those interested in the simulation results.
In cascaded-type microgrid, the synchronization and power balance of distributed generators become two new issues that needs to be addressed urgently. To that end, an f-P/Q droop control is proposed in this letter, and its stability is analyzed as well. This proposed droop control is capable to achieve power balance under both resistive-inductive an resistive-capacitive loads autonomously. Compared with the inverse power factor droop control, an obvious advantage consists in extending the scope of application. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified by simulation results.
