2. 1929
• One of the first music videos was by Bessie Smith. This was
called St Louis Blues. Since television was fairly new in 1929;
the music video was shown in the theatres until 1931. She
had a hit on the song in 1929 and a man called Handy asked
her to appear in a movie.
3. 1950 and 1960’s
• In 1956 a man named Tony Bennett claimed he made the first music video. This was called
the stranger in paradise. This was filmed in Hyde park, London. He managed to distribute to
and played by the UK and USA on television stations. This caused Bennett to later claim that
he made the first music video.
• There was a huge development within the music industry. This would be because of the
development of technology. Around the 60’s the scopitone(a visual jukebox) was invented in
France. This allowed short films to be produced on. Many known French artists such as Serge
Gainsbourg and Francoise Hardy used this to produce their music films. Its use of this
invention made its way to other countries. This was the Cinebox in Italy and the Colour-Sonic
in the USA. These were patented.
• As stated above there was a huge development in the technology. Things such as TV and
Radio stations were becoming more well known which allowed music artist to produce and
distribute to a wider audience. This allowed the music industry to take off and become more
popular.
4. The Mid 1960’s and late 1960’s
This is when TV had a bigger impact within the music
industry. A hugely popular American TV show called the
Monkeys also had a huge influence on the music
industry. There use to be a band performing each
episode which inflected people to become artists. Also
within the 1960’s the defining work by the Beatles also
had a huge impact on the development of modern music
video. Their first major motion picture was called A hard
Days Night. This was created in 1964 and directed by
Richard Lester. The music segments in the film arguably
set out the basic visual vocabulary of today's music. Also
influneced a vast variety of different musicians.
5. 1980
• In 1981 MTV goes on air for the first time ever. The first words was spoken by one of MTV creators John
Lack. He said Ladies and Gentlemen rock and roll. The Buggles was the first music video to air on the new
cable television channel. This was only initially available only to households in parts of New Jersey. MTV
went to revolutionize the music industry and become an influential source of pop culture and
entertainment throughout the Us and other countries across the world. Most countries had MTV branded
channels. In the early days of MTV early days, its programming consisted of basic music videos which
were introduced by VJs (video jokeys) These were recorded free by recording companies. As the record
industry realised the promotional vehicle of MTV. They invested a lot of money in making creative, cutting
edge videos. In the 1980’s MTV was used as a instumental in promotion well known stars such as Michael
Jackson and Madonna.
6. Present.
• The music video has changed a lot from the past. There are more variety of was
you can listen to music. This is due to the technology developing so fast. We can
now download and share new music videos to our friends. This could be done over
social networking sites. There are also apps such as Spotify where you can create
different playlist to listen to your favourite song. This has changed a lot from 30
years ago. This would be because of the technology and this allowed certain
things to develop. We now do not listen to music on a CD often. However if you go
back 10 years ago. CD’s were hugely popular.
