A banquet in Mt.
Olympus – when
King Peleus and
sea nymph Thetis,
married each
other.
Everything started
when Eris, the
goddess of Discord,
was not invited in a
banquet at Mt.
Olympus and decided
to make trouble.
She threw into the
banqueting hall a
golden apple marked
“For the Fairest”.
The choice was
narrowed
down into
three:
Aphrodite,
Hera, & Pallas
Athena
Aphrodite
Pallas
Athena
Hera
The Three Goddesses
asked Zeus to judge
between them, but he
refused. Instead, he
told them to go to Mt.
Ida, near Troy, where a
young prince will give
the decision of who
among them is the
fairest.
Paris, a young prince also
called Alexander, though
a royal prince was doing
a shepherd’s work. He
was an excellent judge of
beauty. At this moment,
he was living with a
lovely nymph Oenone.
Prophecy: King Priam,
Paris’ father, had been
warned that this prince
would someday be the
ruin of his country – Troy.
There appeared 3
divinities in wondrous
forms, but he was asked
not to gaze at them, but
only to consider the
bribes each offered.
Nevertheless, the choice
was not easy.
Aphrodite:
“I promise
that the
fairest woman
in all the
world would
be yours.”
Hera:
“I will make
you the
Lord of
Europe and
Asia.”
Pallas Athena
“I will make
you lead the
Trojans
victory
against the
Greeks and
Paris chose Aphrodite
and her gave the
golden apple.
That was the Judgment
of Paris, famed
everywhere as the real
reason why Trojan War
began.
Helen was the fairest woman in
the world. All the young prince
in Greece wanted to marry him.
King Tyndareus was afraid to
choose one, so he exacted a
solemn oath.
He chose Menelaus, brother of
Agamemnon, and made him the
King of Sparta.
Prince Paris abducted Helen of Troy
Menelause came back only to see his wife gone.
Then he called upon all Greece to help him, The chieftains responded eager to cross the
sea and lay mighty Troy into ashes. However, Odysseus, King of the Island of Ithaca and
Achilles, son of Peleus and Thetis, were gone.
Odysseus did not want to leave his house and family to embark on romantic
adventure.
He pretended that he had gone mad. The King was plowing a field and sowing
it with salt instead of seed when a messenger from Greek Army saw him.
However, the messenger seized his son and put him directly in the way of the
plow. It was proven then that his wits came back and he was forced to join the
Army.
Achilles was hidden by his mother by sending him to the court of Lycomedes
and made him wear women’s clothes and hide among maidens.
Odysseus, disguised as a peddler, with ornaments and weapons.
While the girls flocked around trinkets, Achilles picked the swords and daggers.
A THOUSAND SHIPS CARRIED THE GREEK HOST TO TROY.
FIRST TRIAL:
They met at Aulis, a place of strong winds and dangerous tides, impossible to
sail.
However, the soothsayer – Calchas – declared that the gods spoke to him
“Artemis was angry. One of her beloved wild creatures, a hare, had been slain
by the Greeks”.
The sacrifice of Iphigenia – the eldest
daughter of Agamemnon.
Agamemnon went home
writing his wife that he had
set a marriage for Iphigenia
to Achilles. But when she
came to the wedding she
was carried to the altar to
be killed.
As they reached the mouth of Simois, one of the rivers of
Troy, the first man to arrive there was Protesilaus. However,
an oracle said that “He who landed first would be the first to
die”.
After Protesilaus was killed he was allowed to return
to his wife for only three hours before returning to
the underworld because they had only just married.
Thereafter was described as possibly having
committed suicide by stabbing herself, rather than be
without him.
Do you believe that if a a butterfly appears in
your home, it could be a person you love and
miss?
The Greek Army was very
strong, but the Trojan City was
strong, too.

Conflict between Achilles and
Agamemnon over a woman
When Apollo’s priest prayed to him to give him back his
daughter – Chryseis – whom the Greeks carried off and
given to Agamemnon.
Phoebus Apollo
shots fiery arrows
from his sun-chariot
down upon the
Greek Army, and
men sickened and
died.
In order to appease
Apollo, Chryseis
must be given back
to his father.
So Apollo called all
the chieftains for
assembly planning
to return the woman
to his father.
In exchange, Agamemnon took the maiden Briseis away
from Achilles tent – who was his prize of honor.
Thetis, Achilles’
mother, went to
him in anger
saying she already
went to Zeus and
asked him to give
victory to the
Trojans.

AJAX DIOMEDES
Prince Aeneas – son of
Aphrodite and the best
and bravest next to
Hector – almost died in
Diomedes’ hands, but
his mother lifted him.
However, Diomedes
wounded Aphrodite’s
hand and let Aeneas
fall.
Achilles refused to
fight, and returned
home. All of the
rewards the Greeks had
to offer could not
entice him to return to
battle; however, he
allowed his beloved
friend – Patroclus – to
fight in his place.
When Achilles received
word that Patroclus
was killed by Hector, he
returned to battle
swearing revenge on
Hector.
Achilles killed Hector and
dragged his body behind
the chariot to further
dishonor him.
Priam – King of Troy – came
to Achilles and beg him to
return Hector’s body to give
him a honorable burial. Only
then Achilles’ anger
subsided.
They lamnented Hector for nine –days. They burned his body
and set the urn in a hollow grave and piled great stones over it.
This was the funeral of Hector, tamer of Horses.
And with it the Iliad ends.
