The goals of this project are to: a) find and communication information about microbes to peers b) show understanding of microbe structure & function c) understand the variety of microbes in our environment Project Part I: Each student will choose two species of microbes for this project These microbes cannot be disease-causing. One species must be a bacterium. One species must be a fungus. You cannot use the same species as another student. Once you have selected both species you wish to use, email your choices to Dr. Nesbit. Your microbes must be *approved* by Dr. Nesbit before 11:00am on March 8th . I recommend choosing early to avoid a scramble or late penalty for submitting the same species as another student. The project submission should be two separate files uploaded to Blackboard by 11:00am on March 22nd. The files must be .pdf format of a one page infographic Infographics should be your work and meet the following guidelines: have good flow, design with images that is easy to read and follow state type of microbe (bacterium, fungus, protozoa, or archaea) state scientific name of microbe (Genus and species) provide detailed cellular features of microbe (shape, prokaryote/eukaryote, cell wall components, flagella, coenocytic/septate hyphae, vacuoles, additional organelles or inclusion bodies, etc.) provide detailed growth & reproduction conditions for the microbe (what environment is it found, does it need oxygen, does it grow in high temperatures or special salt, does it do binary fission or spores, what kind of spores, etc.) explain in detail what energy source & metabolism the microbe uses (For example: if the microbe uses fermentation, then say what is being fermented and what is produced during fermentation. Great knowledge and experience on microbiology are required for accurate bacteria identification.
Automation of bacteria identification is required because there might be a shortage of skilled
microbiologists and clinicians at a time of great need. We propose an automatic bacteria identification
framework that can classify three famous classes of bacteria namely Cocci, Bacilli and Vibrio from
microscopic morphology using the Naïve Bayes classifier. The proposed bacteria identification framework
comprises two steps. In the first step, the system is trained using a set of microscopic images containing
Cocci, Bacilli, and Vibrio. The input images are normalized to emphasize the diameter and shape features.
Edge-based descriptors are then extracted from the input images. In the second step, we use theNaïve
Bayes classifier to performprobabilistic inference based on the input descriptors. 64 images for each class
of bacteria were used as the training setand 222 images consisting of the three classes of bacteria and
other random images such as humans and airplanes were used as the test set. There are no images
overlapped between the training set and the test set. The system was found to be able to accurately
discriminate the three classes of bacteria. Moreover, the system was also found to be able to reject images
that did not belong to any of the three classes of bacteria. The preliminary results demonstrate how a
simple machine learning classifier with a set of simple image-based features can result in high
classification accuracy. The preliminary results also demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of our two-step

In contrast with ontology developers concerned with a symbolic or digital environment (e.g. the internet), I draw attention to some features of our 3-D spatio-temporal environment that challenge young humans and other intelligent animals and will also challenge future robots. Evolution provides most animals with an ontology that suffices for life, whereas some animals, including humans, also have mechanisms for substantive ontology extension based on results of interacting with the environment. Future human-like robots will also need this. Since pre-verbal human children and many intelligent non-human animals, including hunting mammals, nest-building birds and primates can interact, often creatively, with complex structures and processes in a 3-D environment, that suggests (a) that they use ontologies that include kinds of material (stuff), kinds of structure, kinds of relationship, kinds of process (some of which are process-fragments composed of bits of stuff changing their properties, structures or relationships), and kinds of causal interaction and (b) since they don't use a human communicative language they must use information encoded in some form that existed prior to human communicative languages both in our evolutionary history and in individual development. Since evolution could not have anticipated the ontologies required for all human cultures, including advanced scientific cultures, individuals must have ways of achieving substantive ontology extension. The research reported here aims mainly to develop requirements for explanatory designs. The attempt to develop forms of representation, mechanisms and architectures that meet those requirements will be a long term research project.

1. Yes, i do agree with Hazelton and gelderblom that the electron microscopy should be the diagnostic tool of choice. I agree with this because after reading some articles i have found that the electron microscopy is fast and realiable. When you are trying to identify a disease or viral outbreak, you are going to need something that will give you fast results that you can trust. I also think when using the electron microscopy that you should use another tool to back your findings.
2. I agree with the statement, electron microscopy has two advantages over enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and nucleic acid amplification tests. After a simple and fast negative stain preparation, the undirected, “open view” of electron microscopy allows rapid morphologic identification and differential diagnosis of different agents contained in the specimen. Details for efficient sample collection, preparation, and particle enrichment are given. Applications of diagnostic electron microscopy in clinically or epidemiologically critical situations as well as in bioterrorist events are discussed. Electron microscopy can be applied to many body samples and can also hasten routine cell culture diagnosis. To exploit the potential of diagnostic electron microscopy fully, it should be quality controlled, applied as a frontline method, and be coordinated and run in parallel with other diagnostic techniques. Future human-like robots will also need this. Since pre-verbal human children and many intelligent non-human animals, including hunting mammals, nest-building birds and primates can interact, often creatively, with complex structures and processes in a 3-D environment, that suggests (a) that they use ontologies that include kinds of material (stuff), kinds of structure, kinds of relationship, kinds of process (some of which are process-fragments composed of bits of stuff changing their properties, structures or relationships), and kinds of causal interaction and (b) since they don't use a human communicative language they must use information encoded in some form that existed prior to human communicative languages both in our evolutionary history and in individual development. Since evolution could not have anticipated the ontologies required for all human cultures, including advanced scientific cultures, individuals must have ways of achieving substantive ontology extension. The research reported here aims mainly to develop requirements for explanatory designs. The attempt to develop forms of representation, mechanisms and architectures that meet those requirements will be a long term research project.

Joseph Campbell, an American mythological researcher, wrote a famous book entitled The
Hero with a Thousand Faces. In his lifelong research Campbell discovered many common patterns
running through hero myths and stories from around the world. Years of research lead
Campbell to discover several basic stages that almost every hero-quest goes through (no matter
what culture the myth is a part of). He calls this common structure “the monomyth.”
George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, claims that Campbell’s monomyth was the inspiration
for his groundbreaking films. Lucas also believes that Star Wars is such a popular saga because it
taps into a timeless story-structure which has existed for thousands of years.
Many followers of Campbell have defined the stages of his monomyth in various ways,
sometimes supplying different names for certain stages. For this reason there are many different
versions of the Hero’s Journey that retain the same basic elements.

Heroes exist in a world is considered ordinary or uneventful by those who live there. Often
the heroes are considered odd by those in the ordinary world and possess some ability or

Fantastic quests don’t happen in everyday life. Heroes must be removed from their typical
environment. Most heroes show a reluctance to leave their home, their friends, and their life to
journey on a quest. But in the end they accept their destiny.
Usually there is a discovery, some event, or some danger that starts them on the heroic path.
Heroes find a mystic object or discover their world is in danger. In some cases, heroes happen
upon their quest by accident. Campbell puts it like this, “A blunder—the merest chance—reveals
an unsuspected world.”
The new world the hero is forced into is much different than the old one. Campbell describes
this new world as a “fateful region of both treasure and danger…a distant land, a forest, a
kingdom underground, beneath the waves, or above the sky, a secret island, lofty mountaintop,
or profound dream state…a place of strangely fluid and polymorphous beings, unimaginable
torments, superhuman deeds, and impossible delight”. This description may seem pretty vague,
but think of all the various fantasy realms characters have entered throughout the years:
Middle-Earth, Oz, Narnia, Wonderland. It could even be outer space, a
haunted house, or the Matrix. Regardless of the details, the new world is sure to be filled with
adventure.

The result of these trials may be favorable or unfavorable. It depends on your reasons/your purpose.

The goals of this project are to: a) find and communication information about microbes to peers b) show understanding of microbe structure & function c) understand the variety of microbes in our environment Project Part I: Each student will choose two species of microbes for this project These microbes cannot be disease-causing. One species must be a bacterium. One species must be a fungus. You cannot use the same species as another student. Once you have selected both species you wish to use, email your choices to Dr. Nesbit. Your microbes must be *approved* by Dr. Nesbit before 11:00am on March 8th . I recommend choosing early to avoid a scramble or late penalty for submitting the same species as another student. The project submission should be two separate files uploaded to Blackboard by 11:00am on March 22nd. The files must be .pdf format of a one page infographic Infographics should be your design with images that is easy to read and follo detailed cellular features of microbe (shape, prokaryote/eukaryote, cell wall components, flagella, coenocytic/septate hyphae, vacuoles, additional organelles or reproduction conditions for the microbe (what environment is it found, does it need oxygen, does it grow in high temperatures or special salt, does it do binary fission or spores, what kind of metabolism the microbe uses (For example: if the microbe uses fermentation, then say what is being fermented and what is produced during fermentation.
