This document outlines "The Four Last Things" - Death, Judgment, Heaven, and Hell. It provides details on each:
Death is inevitable for all and is a consequence of original sin. Judgment consists of the Particular Judgment that occurs after death and the General Judgment that will happen at the end of the world. Hell is a place of eternal punishment involving separation from God and fire, with degrees of punishment corresponding to one's sins. Heaven involves the direct vision of God and degrees of happiness corresponding to one's holiness on Earth. Purgatory is described as a temporary place for purification for those not fully cleansed of sin.

God gave us His Word for a purpose. God wants us to be with Him in heaven. To do this we must change from serving Satan to serving God. God gave His Word so we would know how to live our lives. God gave His Word so we would change.
In talking about the humanity of Christ we must not rely on our reason alone rather we look in the eyes of faith so that we may see the truth clearly. On the other hand, we cannot separate the reason and faith for they must go hand in hand.
As St. Augustine says, faith seeks understanding. Moreover, scripture presents to us the evidences to prove the humanity of Christ. This will be our guide to have an idea on the life of Christ. In addition, the truth by which our early fathers of the church passed on to us will be part of this topic. The error of the teaching of some early Christians will also be included.
Contents of this presentation:
1. What is Christ?
- Direct statements of the Eternity and Deity of the Son of God
- Implications that the Son of God is Eternal

4. Arguments for Christ’s Divinity
Mainstream christian theology seems to support ideas about death and resurrection that are remarkably similar to those of ancient Greek and other middle eastern pagan philosophies. This seems to be at odds with what the protestant cannon represents about the issue.
This slide is a summary overview of what judeo-christian texts highlight about the issue.
The attached power point is for a lesson given by Dr. Douglas Jacoby at the 2012 ICEC at UCLA October 20, 2012. Doug taught about the biblical doctrine of heaven, Hades and hell. He also presented a number of the important views on this subject in Judaism and in the early church, as well as reflecting on some of the views held today on this important topic.
This is vol. 3 of a study of Jesus as a hell fire preacher. Many have studied and written on this passage of Scripture dealing with the rich man in hell, and so we have much to learn about hell from it.
This is vol. 2 of Jesus being a hell fire preacher. This story of the rich man and Lazarus is very popular in preaching and in the study of what Jesus preached about hell.

Renewed in Grace
In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

3. DEATH
This is the dissolution of the union
between the soul and the body
This must happen to everybody, I
repeat everybody
4. REMEMBER THESE ABOUT DEATH
Death is a punishment for sin
Gen 2:17
Gen 3:19
Rom 5:12
Rom 6: 12
5. GENESIS 2: 17
“But of the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil
you shall not eat, for in the
day that you eat of it you
shall die."
6. DEATH
Death is the moment on which our
eternity depends
John 9: 4: “We must work the works of
him who sent me while it is day;
night is coming when no one can
work.”
7. THIRD FACT ABOUT DEATH
No one is certain about the time and circumstance of
death
Luke 12: 40: “You also must be
ready, for the Son of Man is
coming at an unexpected
hour."
9. JUDGMENT
This is the account of the soul before God. At the
end of time, God will sit on his judgment throne or
seat and judge all men.
There are two kinds of judgment.
- Particular Judgment
- General Judgment
10. PARTICULAR JUDGMENT
Immediately after death the soul stands before the
tribunal of Christ to face the particular judgment.
Luke 16:22
Luke 23: 43
11. LUKE 16: 22
“The poor man died and was
carried away by the angels to
be with Abraham. The rich
man also died and was
buried.”
12. GENERAL JUDGMENT
At the end of the world, all men will stand before
the judgment seat of God and give an account
of what they did on earth
General judgment does not change ones state
during particular judgment
13. HELL
Pope Benedict XII states:
“ We also define that, according to God’s general ordinance, the souls
of those who depart this life in actual mortal sin descend
straightaway after death into Hell, where they suffer its torments; yet
nonetheless, in the day of judgment all will appear before the tribunal
of Christ, there to render an account of their actions.”
14. HELL IN SCRIPTURE
Matt. 3: 10-12
Matt 22: 13
Matt 25: 41
“Then the king said to the attendants, Bind him hand
and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where
there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Mt 22:13
15. WHERE IS HELL
Hell is certainly a place, and it seems from
scripture that it is within the earth, though there
are many theories on this point.
The story of Core, Dathan, and Abiron.
Numbers 16: 31- 33
16. NUMBERS 16:31-33
And as he finished speaking all these words, the ground
under them split asunder; 32 and the earth opened its
mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and
all the men that belonged to Korah and all their goods.
33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive
into Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they
perished from the midst of the assembly.
17. The church has decided nothing definite
on the subject on where Hell is.
The most important thing is what St.
Chrysostom talks of: “ We must not ask
where Hell is, but how we are to avoid it.”
18. THE PAINS OF HELL
There is basically two pains or
punishment in hell.
- The pain of loss
- The pain of sense
19. PAIN OF LOSS
This is the loss of the direct vision
of God
This means a total separation of all
the powers of the soul from God,
where the soul has not even the
slightest rest.
20. PAIN OF SENSE
This possibly consist of the torment of fire.
While the fires of the Hell is a physical reality, it is not a
material fire like that which we are familiar with in
everyday life.
The fires of Hell is able to cause torment to both the body
and soul.
It burns without consuming and without needing a
continuously renewed supply of fuel.
21. THE DEGREES OF PUNISHMENT
NOT ALL THE PAINS OF THOSE IN HELL ARE
EQUAL.
The worse one’s life earthly life has been, the more
sufferings one suffers.
Rom 2:6 “For he will render to every man according
to his works”
22. HEAVEN
In Scripture it is used to denote the place of the angels and
the souls of righteous people.
Mt 5: 3-12
1 John 3: 2 “Beloved, we are God's children now; it does
not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he
appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he
is.”
23. WHERE IS HEAVEN
It is uncertain where heaven is.
But about heaven we know that
it is a place outside and beyond
the limits of this earth.
24. HAPPINESS IN HEAVEN
Essentially the happiness of heaven is seeing God
immediately and directly, clearly and distinctly, face to
face, as He is in himself.
This direct vision of God is called beatific vision.
In heaven the blessed also get to know and understand
all the mysteries they believed here on earth
25. DEGREES OF HAPPINESS IN HEAVEN
During their time on earth, the righteous obtain for
themselves greater capacity to know and love God.
John 14:2 “In my Father's house are many
rooms; if it were not so, would I have told you
that I go to prepare a place for you?”
Mt 16: 27
26. PURGATORY
It is a place where souls suffer for a time after death on
account of their sins.
Those who go to purgatory are those who departed this
life in venial sin; or that they have not fully paid the debt
of temporal punishment due to those sins of which the
guilt has been forgiven.
27. PURGATORY IN SCRIPTURE
2 Macc 12: 43- 46
“He also took up a collection, man by man, to the amount of two thousand
drachmas of silver, and sent it to Jerusalem to provide for a sin offering. In
doing this he acted very well and honorably, taking account of the
resurrection. For if he were not expecting that those who had fallen would
rise again, it would have been superfluous and foolish to pray for the dead.
But if he was looking to the splendid reward that is laid up for those who fall
asleep in godliness, it was a holy and pious thought. Therefore he made
atonement for the dead, that they might be delivered from their sin.”
1 Cor 3: 10- 15
28. THE PAINS IN PURGATORY
Souls in purgatory suffer
pain of loss and pain of
sense.
