Food And Its Impact On Society
How mums decide what's healthy (summary)Jeremy Hollow
Throughout the year we conduct research as part of our Original Insights series.
These are projects we commission ourselves, to explore interesting questions and showcase social listening research as a tool for making better decisions.
Our starting point for this work was the realisation that food advice has become deafening. It feels like everyday there’s a new diet, new scare or a new miracle cure.
But, we all know it’s more complicated than the headlines make out.
Helping your family eat well and be healthy is a life-long, every day mission, one with many twists and turns.
So we decided to explore: how mums in the UK talk about being healthy, how and who they’re influenced by, and see what this means for brands.
And so our starting point became: how do UK mums decide what’s healthy?

Hamdard Laboratories (India), is a Unani pharmaceutical company in India (following the independence of India from Britain, "Hamdard" Unani branches were established in Bangladesh (erstwhile East Pakistan) and Pakistan). It was established in 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed in Delhi, and became
a waqf (non-profitable trust) in 1948. It is associated with Hamdard Foundation, a charitable educational trust.
Hamdard' is a compound word derived from Persian, which combines the words 'hum' (used in the sense of 'companion') and 'dard' (meaning 'pain'). 'Hamdard' thus means 'a companion in pain' and 'sympathizer in suffering'.
The goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him.
They had always maintained that working in old, traditional ways would not be entirely fruitful. A broader outlook was essential for a continued and meaningful existence. their effective team at Hamdard helped the system gain its pride of place and thus they made an entry into an expansive world of discovery and research.
Hamdard Laboratories was founded in 1906 in Delhi by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed and Ansarullah Tabani, a Unani practitioner. The name Hamdard means "companion in suffering" in Urdu language.(itself borrowed from Persian) Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed was born in Pilibhit City UP, India in 1883 to Sheikh Rahim Bakhsh. He is said to have learnt the complete Quran Sharif by heart. He also studied the origin of Urdu and Persian languages. Subsequently, he acquired the highest degree in the unani system of medicine.
Hakim Hafiz Abdul Majeed got in touch with Hakim Zamal Khan, who had a keen interest in herbs and was famous for identifying medicinal plants. Having consulted with his wife, Abdul Majeed set up a herbal shop at Hauz Qazi in Delhi in 1906 and started to produce herbal medicine there. In 1920 the small herbal shop turned into a full-fledged production house.
Hamdard Foundation was created in 1964 to disburse the profits of the company to promote the interests of the society. All the profits of the company go to the foundation.
After Abdul Majeed's death, his son Hakeem Abdul Hameed took over the administration of Hamdard Laboratories at the age of fourteen.
Even with humble beginnings, the goals of Hamdard were lofty; easing the suffering of the sick with healing herbs. With a simple tenet that no one has ever become poor by giving, Hakeem Abdul Majeed let the whole world find compassion in him. Unfortunately, he passed away quite early but his wife, Rabia Begum, with the support of her son, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, not only kept the institution in existence but also expanded it. As he grew up, Hakeem Abdul Hameed took on all responsibilities. After helping with his younger brother's upbringing and education, he included him in running the institution. Both brothers Hakeem Abdul Hameed and Hakim Mohammed
1. The Food We Eat
For Class V English PPT by M PADMA LALITHA SHARADA
2. ‘Food is vital for our survival. From the time
that we are babies, we need good food to grow
strong. Good food has many qualities.
Can you tell me what they are?’
asked Dr. Aruna.
Some children answered, ‘It is
natural.’ Other said, ‘ It is
nutritious.’
3. ‘Good,’ said Dr. Aruna. ‘Good food is a well-balanced
food which gives your body all that it needs.
4. Today, when there are so many different kinds of
food to eat, it is also important to remember that all
of them may not be healthy for us.
5. Do we choose to eat food for its taste alone, or do we choose to
eat food that helps us to be alert and have energy?’
6. Dr. Aruna continues,
‘Good food is truly tasty
because it has the
flavour of the things that
go into preparing it.
7. What do you
like to eat?
Can you say
whether
some of the
things that
you like to
eat are
healthy or
unhealthy?’
8. ‘We buy most of
the things we eat
from the market.
In school, we eat
hot and healthy
food that is made
for the noon meal
or what we bring
from home.’
9. ‘What do you eat
in the afternoon?
Soft idlis, tasty dosas,
fragrant sambar-rice,
spicy biriyani, eggs, fruit.
10. How good they sound! They are both mouth-watering and
healthy. But we don’t always eat healthy food,’ she said.
14. ‘What makes us feel the need to eat food that is
unhealthy? One reason for this is hidden in the time
that we watch television.
15. How much time do you spend watching TV?’
She asked. ‘Three hours?’ Many hands went up.
16. ‘What programmes do you
watch?’ She enquired.
The children named a few.
‘How often do you see
advertisements in these
programmes?’ She asked.
They did not know. She then
told them a scary fact.
17. ‘What do you see in the advertisements for food? How
often do you watch television, and pester your mother to
buy what you see there?
18. Most chocolates, chips, soft drinks, cakes and biscuits may not be
very healthy to eat. But the advertisements look very good.’
19. ‘There are advertisements that tell you that you will
become a ‘super hero’ if you have a particular drink.
Some may show you your favourite film star or sports
hero, who is very happy having a soft drink.
20. Though we all know that soft drinks are bad
for health, we feel like having them.
What would you like to do?’ asked Dr. Aruna and
ended her speech. The children clapped loudly.
21. Before she left, she gave them some suggestions: ‘Find
out what goes into the food you eat. Ask where the
food you eat comes from.
22. Think and reflect upon why you want to eat certain kinds
of food, even when you know they are not good for you.
23. Why does a packet of old chips stored in a shop for a long
time, in a colourful packet seems better than the fresh
chips that mother or granny makes?’
Banana Chips
24. All children were silent. They were thinking how many
times they laughed at their friends for being ‘old fashioned’
in their food habits.
