Projection Indexes for HDF5 Datasets

S3 VFD

Running complex data queries in a distributed system
With the always-growing amount of data, it is getting increasingly hard to store and get it back efficiently. While the first versions of distributed databases have put all the burden of sharding on the application code, there are now some smarter solutions that handle most of the data distribution and resilience tasks inside the database.
This poses some interesting questions, e.g.
- how are other than by-primary-key queries actually organized and executed in a distributed system, so that they can run most efficiently?
- how do the contemporary distributed databases actually achieve transactional semantics for non-trivial operations that affect different shards/servers?
This talk will give an overview of these challenges and the available solutions that some open source distributed databases have picked to solve them.
Earth Science Platform
Science platforms are made up of (at least) four planks: data formats, services, tools and conventions. I focus here on formats and conventions, specifically the HDF5 format, already used in many disciplines, and the Climate-Forecast and HDF-EOS Conventions. Many science disciplines have already agreed on HDF as the preferred format for storing and sharing data. It is well established in high performance computing and supports arbitrary grouping and annotation. Community conventions are critical for useful data on top of the format. The Climate-Forecast (CF) conventions were created for relatively simple gridded data types while the HDF-EOS conventions originally considered more complex data (swaths). Making simple conventions more complex makes adoption more difficult. Community input and the need for stable data processing systems must be balanced in governance of conventions.

Data mesh is a relatively recent term that describes a set of principles that good modern data systems uphold. A kind of “microservices” for the data-centric world. While the data mesh is not technology-specific as a pattern, the building of systems that adopt and implement data mesh principles have a relatively long history under different guises.
In this talk, we share our recommendations and picks of what every developer should know about building a streaming data mesh with Kafka. We introduce the four principles of the data mesh: domain-driven decentralization, data as a product, self-service data platform, and federated governance. We then cover topics such as the differences between working with event streams versus centralized approaches and highlight the key characteristics that make streams a great fit for implementing a mesh, such as their ability to capture both real-time and historical data. We’ll examine how to onboard data from existing systems into a mesh, modelling the communication within the mesh, how to deal with changes to your domain’s “public” data, give examples of global standards for governance, and discuss the importance of taking a product-centric view on data sources and the data sets they share.

Are you considering converting your daily batch ETLs into a new and exhilarating realtime framework? We’ll help you look before you leap as we take a deep dive into the unique operational challenges entailed in transitioning data processing paradigms.
As batched data pipelines consume data from well defined time intervals and write results to partitioned data storage, batched jobs are often idempotent, so the failure recovery is simply rerunning the faulty job instances. Batched data processes are triggered at a certain frequency (e.g. daily or hourly), so the data latency is determined by both the job scheduler and job run time. Therefore, many advanced data use cases, such as frequency capping, requires event streaming to enable real-time data insights. Event streaming applications process unbounded input data in real-time and append output to message queues and/or tables to be further processed. However, real-time data insights are no free meal - because event streaming comes with many unique engineering challenges, such as handling late-arriving and duplicate events, implementing event-time partitioning, and backfilling historical data after failures. In addition, batched-driven and even streaming are not incompatible to each other but can often be better together, as the Delta and Kappa Architecture are commonly adopted in modern data systems.
