The Five Pillars of Islam

Editor's Notes

  1. This slide uses animations. Pillars are used to hold up structures. In much the same way, the Five Pillars of Islam support the religion.
  2. This slide uses animations. First thing heard when born. Last thing heard before death.
  3. Pray five times a day. The towers are minarets. A muezzin would stand there and call the faithful to prayer. It is now often done by recording. Once can pray alone or--especially on Fridays--in large groups.
  4. When you pray, you are supposed to face Mecca. If you’re in Mecca, you’re supposed to face the Holy Kaaba. Hotels in the Middle East even include arrows designed to help guests know which way to face when they pray. The device is a qibla compass, designed to point toward Kaaba. You can even get electic clock radios with qibla built into them.
  5. It is an obligation on Muslims to pay 2.5% of their wealth to specified categories in society when their annual wealth exceeds a minimum level. 1. There are eight categories of people who may receive the collected Zakat: 2. The Poor (those who do not have enough to cover their basic needs. This includes anyone of any religion or race) 3. The Destitute (those with no property or income at all) 4. The Collectors 5. People Whose Hearts are to be Reconciled (Normally new Muslims or those close to becoming Muslim. Even non-muslims could be included) 6. Freeing Slaves 7. Debtors (to help those heavily indebted with paying their debts) 8. In the Way of Allah (normally taken to mean helping those fighting [jihad]) 9. Travellers (who find themselves in difficult circumstances)
  6. Ramadan is ninth month of Islamic calendar, and the month during which the Qur’an was revealed. Based on lunar calendar, so it shifts each year; sometimes it’s during the short days of winter, but sometimes it falls during summer. You can make it up later if you’re sick or traveling. Purity of thought and deed. No man/woman stuff during the day. Build discipline, evoke feelings of sympathy with those less fortunate.
  7. White garment and shaved head to show purity and rebirth. Stoning the devil. Walking around the holy Kaaba.
  8. This slide uses animations for each of the pillars. Check for understanding and confirm by clicking in a pillar.
