Text-To-Self Connections

 1. 1. Text-To-Self-Connections: You read things that remind you of your own experiences . Coded on Post-It: T-S T-S This reminds me of…

 3. 3. “ 7 Arrested in School Cafeteria Food Fight” A food fight that started with fruit cup turned into a mealtime melee, serving up a full plate of arrests and injuries. Seven seventh-graders were arrested after a spat in a middle school cafeteria left two teachers and a detective with injuries Wednesday. The incident began at West Side Middle School after a girl dumped a fruit cup over a boy's head, police said. The two started fighting, then other students joined in, some jumping on tables and throwing food, police said. "What was described as a riot situation developed in the cafeteria," Sgt. Christopher Corbett said. A detective and two teachers suffered minor injuries breaking up the melee. Three girls and fours boys ranging in age from 12 to 14 were arrested on charges including breach of peace, assault and inciting a riot. All seven were released to their parents after promising to appear in juvenile court.
 4. 4. T-S This reminds me of the end-of-the-year tug of war last year. It was total chaos when all the students ran out on the floor! I was afraid that there was going to be a riot, and I knew that I'd be powerless to do anything about it.

 6. 6. “ Honey, Remember To Turn On The Rooster Booster...”

Make predictions about this true news article.

What is it about?

Who is involved?

How does it end?

Are people happy or sad when it’s all over?

Discuss with a neighbor.

 7. 7. “ Honey, Remember To Turn On The Rooster Booster...” Before leaving on vacation, a German couple set up a loudspeaker and timer with the sound of a crowing cock to blast their neighbors every morning. After complaints, police in the northern town of Itzehoe obtained a warrant to enter the house and discovered the gear with the speakers aimed at the neighbors and rigged to a timer. "The apparatus switched on between 2 and 4 o'clock in the morning and produced a cock crowing at an enormous volume. This would last for 20 minutes with breaks in between," police said. Police confiscated the gear and charged the vacationers, who are still away, with bodily harm and disturbing the peace. The neighbors had no history of antagonism.
 8. 8. T-S This reminds me of our neighbors the Buffalo Sisters. That's what we called the girls who lived in the apartment above our family when I was first going to college. All they did was pound around in their apartment and make noise. Things fell off our walls. We had to call the police.

 10. 11. Third Grade Stars Make predictions about the scene in this story. This passage is going to be about P.E. class. Based on your experiences of stories and P.E., what might happen? Discuss with a neighbor.
 11. 12. Third Grade Stars Carly was next. Her forward roll wasn't too bad, but she didn't land in the starting position. Then it was Mindy's turn. She looked at Amber with scared eyes. “I know I can't do this,” she whispered. “You go in front of me.” Amber wasn't sure she could do it either. “I'm going to be terrible at this,” she said. She crouched at the edge of the mat. Her knees were under her chin, her head tucked low. Palms flat on the mat, she leaned forward, then rolled. She finished in the starting position. She wasn't terrible after all! “ Yes!” she cried, jumping up and shaking one fist skyward. “Go, Mindy!” Looking like she had a stomachache, Mindy squatted on the mat. Her knees did not come as close to her chest as Amber's and her head wasn't low enough. She rolled at an angle, off the mat. David and Henry hooted with laughter.
 12. 13. T-S This reminds me of almost every day I ever spent in PE class. I could never do anything well, and I remember that people laughed at me a lot.
