'Family' is a single word, with many different
meanings. People have many ways of defining a
family and what being a part of a family means
to them. Families differ in terms of economic,
cultural, social, and many other facets, but
what every family has in common is that the
people who call it a family are making clear
that those people are important in some way to
the person calling them his family.
Filipino family is
a family of Philippineorigin. Philippine
families exhibit Filipino cultures, customs,
traits and values, of which the most important
value is family closeness.
The Filipino family typically consists of a father,
mother, children, extended family members like
grandparents, cousins and aunts and
uncles. Overall, they are a close-knit structure.
Consist of :
A family that extends beyond the nuclear family,
including grandparents, aunts, uncles, and
other relatives, who all live nearby or in one
household.
a type of extended family composed of parents, t
heir children, and the children's spouses and
offspring in one household.
“Ifyoudon’tsticktoyourvalueswhenthey’rebeing
tested,they’renotvalues;they’rehobbies.”
• Values are individual beliefs that motivate
people to act one way or another. They serve
as a guide for human behavior.
• Some values have intrinsic worth, such as
love, truth, and freedom. Other values, such
as ambition, responsibility, and courage,
describe traits or behaviors that are
instrumental as means to an end.
• The Filipino family consists of many
traditional values that have been treasured
and passed on for many generations already.
These values are incredibly beneficial.
While many values can be taught or instilled over
time, they are arguably more enduring when they are
picked up on their own. The Filipino family has
values that have been treasured and passed on for
many generations already. These values are believed
to be beneficial as it fulfill some of the basic needs
of people.
Paggalang (Respect)
- Filipinos are accustomed to using the words “po,”
“opo,” and “ho” when they are conversing with older
people or, sometimes, with those who are in a high role
or a prestigious member of society. Using these words is
customary in the Philippines, and it shows a sign of
respect if you do so.
Pakikisama (Helping Others)
- There is a general yearning to be accepted and well-
liked among Filipinos. This applies to one and his or her
friends, colleagues, boss, and even relatives. This desire
is what steers one to perform pakikisama.
Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya (Prioritizing Family)
Utang na Loob (Debt of Gratitude)
- Pagpapahalaga sa Pamilya. In other words: putting
importance on your family.
- This implies that a person will place a high regard on
their family and prioritize that before anything else.
- Utang na Loob means to pay your debt with gratitude.
- With utang na loob, there is usually a system of obligation.
When this value is applied, it imparts a sense of duty and
responsibility on the younger siblings to serve and repay the
favors done to them by their elders.
Hiya (Shame)
- Hiya means shame.
-This controls the social behaviors and interactions of a
Filipino. It is the value that drives a Filipino be obedient and
respectful to their parents, older siblings, and other
authorities.
The Filipino people are very traditional people. They
believe in many different kinds of customs and
follow lots of various traditions.
• The Filipino people are known to have close family ties.
This is why you may notice that when you are in the
Philippines, the people in a vicinity most of the time
know each other.
• The Filipino people will stay with their parents as long
as possible. If they would have to move out to a new
house, the homeowner will be asked to throw some
coins when he opens the front door.
The Filipino people are very religious as well. Therefore,
there are quite a lot of Filipino culture, customs and
traditions for the home and family that is based on
religious beliefs.
• During the morning, it is also customary for Filipino
people to open their east window. This is said to
bring God’s grace inside the house through the sun.
• It is also very important to make sure that there are
statues of Jesus or Mary in the house. It is also
important that they are facing the direction of the
front door.
