12 Things You Should Know Before You Launch an AppMarie Outtier
You're launching an app? Great! Here's a summary of the 12 most important things you should know about before you launch.
This deck was presented at the Google Campus for entrepreneurs in London in May 2016.
There are two components to finding customers for your business. Combine the right mix of data, creativity and you have a full funnel with prospects waiting to purchase your product.
Recording of the Backbase webinar Building a Smarter Bank, with Ron Shevlin.
With technological developments and upstarts threatening to disrupt and displace established financial institutions, what should banks and credit unions do to defend their positions, and to grow and thrive in the new world of banking?
In short, it's about how to become a ‘smarter’ bank – smarter about developing customer trust and relationships, smarter about understanding consumers' needs and wants, smarter about using technology, smarter about marketing products and services, and smarter about making money.
In this webinar, Ron Shevlin, author of Smarter Bank, Snarketing Blogger & analyst at Cornerstone Advisors (before he worked at Aite Group and Forrester), provides a no-nonsense framework to address broad issues impacting banking's rapidly changing business model. The webinar addresses topics such as innovation, big data, customer engagement, mobile payments, personal financial management, and the changing financial behaviors of consumers, in particular, the Millennials.

This is a keynote presentation that I shared for the launch of the MaGIC Startup Academy in Malaysia. The theme is challenging startup conventions, or thinking in ways which are different than what is commonly accepted. It comes from my observation that startups - while doing things that are new and different - are often expected to follow a set path to success.
The presentation is divided into three parts:
1) The growth of the New York tech ecosystem and how it was unique from Silicon Valley
2) The opportunities for the Malaysian tech ecosystem (and all up-and-coming tech ecosystems) through the lens of a Challenger mentality
3) Nine ways that I've challenged conventional thinking in startup marketing and growth

As designers and agency owners we constantly manage the chaos of mastering a craft, being diverse, all the while trying to differentiate ourselves and adapting our processes and deliverables in an industry that changes at lightening speeds. As if the web wasn’t difficult enough, the advent of mobile product design and service design has created an entirely new industry and career paths, completely disrupting everything we knew about engagements, processes, deliverables, and expectations of design teams and agencies.
Face it, the industry is constantly changing and so should we. Let’s learn to embrace change and use it to intentionally position ourselves for constant reinvention and how to fashion the skills and environments necessary for creating meaningful products in the modern age and beyond.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
