  • Cutural Understanding, Also Cross- Power of place = Footfall Third place = An open non commercial alternative. A democratic right for everyone independent of income level. A free service. The values of libraries, museums and archives are often mentioned but seldom discussed. Searching Google the values of libraries you get few hits and trying Archives and Museums even fewer. There are estimates on economical value which that for example on libraries get 4-7 dollars ROI.
  • How do we present all searches and findings. What are the criteria for a succesful hunt for information. How do we build our solutions. How hold the hands of our user to make them find the treasures we offer. You cant hold hands with a central bureaucrat.
  • There are a tremendous amount of treasures out there. The potential use, especially virtually, could be rocketing. Having the right instruments we could foster the use of these objects from oblivion to exper.ience
  • In the Flickr Commons Flickr acts as a virtual shopping window but behind Flickr there is the real thing, the store, the original base is something different. LOC and Swedish National Museum use Flickr and of course a lot of smaller projects do. A very good idea in many ways because Flickr has the status it has and is used by millions of people. The challenge with this is to get the people who really know about this to comment and these comments to stand out from the generic ones (like this one). The quality comments that count should be governed by the institution of origin and not by Flickr. Comments need to be local. It gives the IMPACT that we are looking for.
  • The point – you must have full and total control over your data. Dont ever give it up!

  • These things go in waves. It is not unusual that Central is in fashion during recessions. Central solutions gives synergy but you should always be aware of the motivation for your local presence. The central plans and projects should benefit YOUR communication with your users. The government cannot foster local power. It can though build the infrastructure to interconnect the local forces. The open and formatted data infrastructure should make YOUR SITE a better place. As citizens we need our local cultural institutions live and vibrant inspiring our contributions. The local institutions can though update and interact with central soultions.
