12. ARURU CREATES ENKIDU TO COUNTER GILGAMESH
So, the people beg for gods’ help. Shamash, the
god of heaven, commands Aruru, the goddess of
creation, to create a man who can counter
Gilgamesh’s arrogance. So, Aruru shaped
Enkidu—a huge, hairy man who lived among the
herds of antelope and gazelles.
13. SHAMHAT TAMES ENKIDU AND INTRODUCED
GILGAMESH TO HIM
Upon learning Enkidu’s existence, Gilgamesh
sent Shamhat, a servant from Ishtar’s temple, to
the forest where Enkidu lives and seduce him.
But Shamhat was the first to fall in love with
Enkidu’s physique; they made love for 7 days and
Enkidu learned how to become a human.
14. ENKIDU CHALLENGES GILGAMESH IN URUK;
FROM THERE, THEIR FRIENDSHIP WAS BORN
Enkidu heard about Gilgamesh and his harsh
kingship from Shamhat. It made him angry that
he rushed to Uruk to put an end to his atrocities.
Gilgamesh and Enkidu fought—but their
strengths are almost on par. Still, Enkidu was
defeated. In the end, they became friends.
15. GILGAMESH AND ENKIDU KILLED HUMBABA,
THE GUARDIAN OF THE FOREST
One day, Gilgamesh decides to travel to the
Cedar Forest to kill its monster guardian,
Humbaba. To him, it is necessary for driving
away the evil and making himself more famous.
Enkidu objects—respecting Enlil, a universal god,
who made Humbaba the forest’s protector.
16. GILGAMESH SNUBS ISHTAR;
THE HEROES KILLED THE BULL OF HEAVEN
The heroes return home after their victory.
Gilgamesh refreshed himself and dressed so
kingly—kingly enough to attract Ishtar, the
goddess of sexual love and war. But Gilgamesh
insulted her as “inconstant”. With anger, Ishtar
she sent the Bull of Heaven to kill the heroes.
17. THE GODS DECREE ENKIDU MUST DIE TO PUNISH
HIM AND GILGAMESH
The night after killing the Bull of Heaven, Enkidu
had a nightmare—he saw the council of heavens
discussing the murder they did to Humbaba and
the Bull of Heaven. Indeed, Enlil decreed
Enkidu’s death. He suffered for 12 days before
meeting death, with Gilgamesh by his side.
18. GILGAMESH WANDERS THE WILDERNESS;
MOURNING THE DEATH OF ENKIDU
Gilgamesh, who has built strong friendship with
Enkidu, mourned for his death. He arranged his
funeral and asked the gods to take care of
Enkidu in the underworld. He left Uruk to grieve;
there he looked for Utnapishtim to learn how to
escape death through immortality.
20. UTNAPISHTIM EXPLAINS HOW HE AND HIS WIFE
BECAME IMMORTAL TO GILGAMESH
Gilgamesh survives the tunnel in the garden of
the gods. There, Siduri, goddess of wine and
wisdom, warns him against crossing the ocean
and advises him to retreat, but he refused.
Finally, Gilgamesh meets Utnapishtim, whom Enlil
blessed with immortality along with his wife and
settled in the distant east.
22. GILGAMESH FAILS TO BECOME IMMORTAL AND
SLEEPS SEVEN DAYS
Utnapishtim then sets a test for Gilgamesh: if he
can stay awake for seven days, perhaps the gods
will let him escape death. But because his
journey has exhausted him, Gilgamesh falls
asleep immediately and sleeps for seven days.
23. GILGAMESH FINDS, THEN LOSES, THE PLANT THAT
RESTORES YOUTH
Utnapishtim offers a consolation prize, directing
Gilgamesh to search the deep waters for a plant
that renews youth. Weighting his feet with
stones, Gilgamesh sinks into the deep water and
finds the plant.
25. URSHANABI AND GILGAMESH, NOW A WISE KING,
ARRIVE IN URUK
The men travel on until they reach Uruk, where
Gilgamesh, in language that echoes the
prologue, proudly shows Urshanabi what a
marvelous city his people have built.
