SOLAR WARRIOR FARM
We created Solar Warrior Farm, a small garden located at the Red Cloud
Renewable Energy Center on the Pine Ridge Reservation, to act as a living,
inspirational, educational demonstration site for the Lakota people. The garden
produces native and traditional foods such as, potatoes, cucumbers, squash,
tomatoes, corn, melons, peppers, carrots, and a variety of berries, all of which are
harvested and distributed to local Lakota families.
Solar Warrior Farm is not just a source of healthy food - it is a community
gathering space where knowledge can be passed from mentors to local residents
by way of simple gardening techniques. Throughout the season, host guest
instructors to lead workshops that provide tribal families with important
information about healthy eating, as well as hands-on practice in organic
gardening to inspire them to create and care for their own home gardens.
