The Effects Of Plastic Pollution On California
Plastic Pollution in California The beauty of California is slowly fading away and as
environmentalists would say, "There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed
to live in harmony with its surrounding" (Carson, 366). According to the findings revealed by
research foundations in California, marine life is and has been in great danger as a result of plastic
remains that accumulates in the Ocean. In his article Daniel Woods states, "Approximately eighty
percent of remains found in Oceans are made of plastic that originates from urban runoffs such as
plastic trash carried away from landfills, trucks, as well as garbage containers, marinas, ports and
construction trash" (Wood, 20). Furthermore, these results also revealed that marine remains where
made up of disposable plastic products that constitute food packaging as well as containers that are
ever present and contain precious resources that can be used unsustainably. These issues have
affected the state critically and have lead me to research the reasons behind the banning of plastic
pollution, their economic impact, harm resulting from plastic pollution, as well as federal concerns
on plastic contamination.
The reason behind banning plastic pollution in California was triggered by the fact that disposable
plastic bags as well as food containers were filling Oceans with a lot of plastic remains.
Additionally, California's tourism economy has suffered tremendously interfering with the forty

Our Disposable Society
As Americans, we are privileged to many luxuries. Not every country allows its citizens to start their
own businesses or provides the education it takes to run a company. Our free market system allows
for many different goods and services to compete fairly for people's dollars. The freedom given to us
by our forefathers grants the opportunity to choose between these goods and services. Put all these
realities together and it's no wonder we have so many different forms of products. A relatively recent
phenomenon that has subsequently emerged in our society is the prevalence of disposable products.
Because of their convenience, efficiency, and relatively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In fact, we throw away 2 billion disposable razors and 16 billion disposable diapers each year, this
number growing each year as our hyper consumption of disposable products continues. Roughly
eighty percent of all household trash goes to landfills, which are hazards unto themselves. Toxic
chemicals leak out of the landfills and contaminate ground water and surface water. Also, space for
new landfills is constantly needed, but no one wants a landfill near them, thus creating political
problems and angry citizens ( Bormann and Kellert 100–102). Although some disposable products,
such as plastic cups and cameras, can be recycled, the recycling rates are still quite low ( only thirty
percent of household waste gets recycled). Britt Anne Bernheim, in her article "Can We Cure Our
Throwaway Habits by Imposing the True Social Cost on Disposable Products?", brings up another
negative point about disposables. "The true social cost of a product includes both the cost of its
production and other costs that are not reflected in the product's market price. Examples of costs that
are absent from the products price include: the deferred cost of disposal..., and the future cost of
depleting domestic and foreign natural resources... Because the market price of disposable consumer
products does not reflect their true social cost, the difference must be borne by individuals who are
not involved in the production and consumption of those

Life Cycle Assessment ( Lca )
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a technique used to quantify environmental outcomes– energy,
materials used, and released wastes– assignable to a product. It assesses the environmental impacts
of their supply chain activities as a whole. By looking at the full picture of the activities, a firm such
as Procter and Gamble (P&G) could view the environmental tradeoffs of product innovation. In
efforts to sustain competitive advantage with their popular–selling item, disposable diapers, the use
of LCA aides in making decisions for producing greener products for its customers, and to reduce
environmental footprint. The public is becoming widely concerned with the products effects on
resources and the environment. "These effects occur at every stage in a product's life cycle–from the
extraction of the raw materials from the ground through the processing, manufacturing, and
transportation phases, ending with use and disposal or recycling" (Le–van,1995, p.7,). The present
study aims to evaluate the life cycle system of disposable diapers in efforts to assign understanding
of the sustainability benefits of Life Cycle Assessment.
An LCA–measured environmental improvements analysis in Pampers® diapers reported that, "the
sourcing and production of diaper materials contribute most to the environmental indicators
evaluated, accounting for ∼84% of all non–renewable energy uses and ∼64% of global warming
potential" (Weisbrod and Hoof,2011). The sustainable development study used LCA to

The Effects Of Disposable Bags On The Environment Essay
The amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases released by our activities and use for equipment
such as air conditioners is far more than ecosystems can absorb. Tree absorb in the gas that is
contributing to global warming. They release oxygen in to the atmosphere as well. Normal
fluorescents light consume more energy and waste energy resource. Vehicles are a major cause of
global warming. Cars and trucks account for nearly one–fifth of all US emissions, emitting around
24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global–warming gases for every gallon of gas. Plug unused
electronics consume electric energy. High–flow sink waste large amount of water. Disposable bags
may seem convenient but have proven to be a huge source of pollution. According to research
conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency, somewhere between five hundred billion and
one trillion disposable bags are used each year around the world.
We can save energy by purchasing locally grown and produced foods. The energy used to transport
foods from all over the world is extremely high. By buying locally, we can save fuel, as well as help
out our community economically. Eating local means, more money stays within our community.
Every dollar spent generates twice as much income for the local economy. Local produce is fresher
and tastes better because it is usually sold within 24 hours of being picked. If we buy produce at a
conventional grocery store, it may have been kept in storage for days or weeks. When we buy

Paper Towel Lab Report
Paper towels are invaluable product for cleaning up everyday spills in every household. The United
States is the largest consumer of paper towels. In the United States, 50% more paper towels are
consumed than Europe and five times more than Latin America. More importantly, we use it daily in
my household. With this in mind, I wanted to determine which product on the market absorbs the
most and cost effective. Many TV commercials state that their product works the best and therefore
I took matter into my own hands and decided to investigate this. My original hypothesis was that
Bounty, which has the most commercial advertising that I had seen, would be the most absorbent
and economical. The paper towel was invented by Arthur Scott who ... Show more content on

Here is the detailed procedure for conducting my experiment: Fill the measuring cup up with exactly
200 ml of water. Take two sheets of the first brand of paper towel. Fold and insert them into the
water. As you dip the towels, start your stopwatch. After 15 seconds, remove the towels from the
measuring cup and squeeze as much water as you can out of the towels into the other bowl. Measure
the water in the bowl with 15 ml measuring cup. Make a note of the volume extracted. Repeat 4
times for each brand and write in notebook. The purpose of this experiment was to find out if
Bounty was more absorbent than other leading brands. For bounty the average was 47 ml and for
Sparkle it was 42 ml. For Sam's Club Members Mark the average was 47 ml. lastly, the average for
Walmart generic was 37. My hypothesis was that Bounty would be the most absorbent. But after the
experiment, the result showed that Bounty was not better than low costing Sam's Club Members

their conclusion was similar to mine – they found out that leading brands are not necessarily better

What Is The Surplus Of Disposable Bonds?
The surplus of disposable income makes people want to become an investor or a saver by
transferring their excess money to an individual, a company or government that have little in order
to meet their immediate needs. This transfer is mostly carried out by a bank or broker and before
delving into becoming an investor, it is paramount to take a closer look at the different types of
investments, their market and understand how they work and how the diverse investors can plan
their investment goals and strategies. In this essay, I am going to discuss what bonds and stock
means, list their features, how they are traded, how to calculate an annual rate of return, et al.

Although, sometimes the shares of stock does not increase as the company's profit increases due to
different factors that have to do with the market or the economy.
There are two different types of stocks, namely, common stock and preferred stock; therefore they
have different features: dividend, corporate organization and control, preemptive rights, voting
rights and issues (common stocks), no voting right, convertible and receive higher claim on assets
and earnings (dividend) than common stocks. (The Economic Times, 2017) Immediately a company
finishes the initial public offering (IPO), the shares become public and traded in the secondary stock
market, where the buyers and sellers (the existing shareholders) of the stocks meet to decide on the
price to trade their shares. (Hayes, 2017)
Furthermore, the annual rate of return on investment, which is the return created from investment
over a particular period of time can be calculated by first knowing the income, the gain or loss in
value and the original value at the beginning of the year. Then, the percentage return can be
estimated by adding the income and the gain together, then divided by the original value {[income +
gain / original value} or {[income + (ending value – original value)] / original value} (Siegal &
Yacht, 2009, p. 232)

How to Change a Baby's Diaper
INTRODUCCION
ATTENTION GETTER
How many people have had kids or taken care of babies before?
How many people actually have had the chance to change a baby 's diaper?
GOAL STATEMENT
I want you to think about this topic, and recognize that the act of changing diapers is anything but
nasty or insignificant, it is in fact something you may need to learn (or redo) sooner than what you
think, and when that time comes, I guarantee you want to be ready – and go for it!
THESIS STATEMENT
I will show you how to change a baby 's diaper by first telling you the supplies you need ahead of
time, second by using a step by step procedure and illustrations on how to do it, and third what are
the major considerations when it comes to using cloth or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Disposable People Summary
Kevin Bales' Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy explores the fact that slavery
still exists in many different forms throughout the world. Most people believe that slavery ended
with the abolition of the slave trade, however slavery just managed to evolve. In Bales' preface to
the 2012 edition, Bales mentions that he regrets using the terms 'new slavery' and 'old slavery.' Old
slavery is typically regarded as legal ownership where slaves were long–term investments. Slaves
were almost always ethnically different from their owners. Today, ownership of human beings is
illegal in every country. New slavery is fueled by greed and money. Slaves are not owned legally,
but are controlled by violence. These types of slaves are disposed ... Show more content on

Most of the prostitutes are bought at a young age from consensual parents, or recruited. Once the
brothel owner or pimp has them, they are beaten into submission and are raped until they are
controllable. Prostitutes are hardly paid anything for their services and most of their earnings will go
to the brothel owners and pimps. Prostitutes face various risks from being beaten, broken bones and
even contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Those that get too old, scarred or diseased to
continue working are discarded like trash to fend for themselves. This is a lot like old slavery where
the slaves were beaten, hardly made any money for their services and when they got too old they
were discarded or sold.
Mauretania has abolished slavery many times, yet still most "ex–slaves" do unpaid work for
clothing and food, but the government denies that this is slavery. The government states that they
aren't really slaves, they are just collateral. Sadly most of these people have accepted this way of life
because it offers them a sense of security because there is nothing else to do in such an
impoverished country. Same is true with old slavery. Those workers are made to work other people's
land, perform jobs for little more than just clothing and

first my response was ew I'm not reusing something from my period. Well after a bit longer my

far but they are great! They hold a large amount. I went to Disney walked around and I still stayed

Summary Of 'The Media Torrent And Disposable Feeling'
"Supersaturation, or, The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling"
I chose to read "Supersaturation, or, The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling" by Todd Gitlin. It
intrigues me by how correct he is about how technology is changing the world by offering things to
people they would not have had two hundred years ago. He argues that media is now widely
available to anyone anytime. Before the use of technology, media was not readily available to all
classes of people. Today, media is now available to all classes of people even those at the poverty
level. Media is undoubtedly one of the largest growing technologies in the world. The author gives
examples of media in the seventeenth century stating how little they have compared to the unlimited

In the past, people had to learn how to play an instrument, go see an acquaintance that did know
how to play or they could pay to go to the theater. Today that is not the case. If someone wants to
listen to music yet again all they need to do is pull out a phone, computer or tablet and music is there
at the push of a button. It is also easier for someone to play an instrument without actually learning
to play an instrument. Smule is an excellent example of a company that does just that, allows you to
play an instrument with out playing one. The company has come out with several different apps for
smart devices. One made for playing the piano is called Magic Piano. This app allows you to follow
the screen and as dots scroll down you push them with your finger. This gives the illusion of you
pressing keys on the piano. One other company came out with a game for your television game
console which gives you and your friends the illusion of being in a rock band. The game was
literally called Rock Band. This game came with drums, guitar and a microphone. Then each person
selected which instrument they wanted and followed the screen and strummed, hummed or banged

Write An Argumentative Essay On Alzheimer's
Deodorant plays an essential role in your daily routine, but while your deodorant may be keeping
you dry and odor–free, it could also be increasing your risks for serious health problems in the
future. When you turn your store–bought deodorant container over, you'll most likely see a long list
of ingredients you can't even pronounce, including one in particular that has gained a lot of press in
recent years, aluminum.
Why Aluminum?
Aluminum has been present in both deodorants and antiperspirant since the late 19th century. While
deodorant itself underwent various incarnations up until the late 1970s, aluminum has remained a
primary ingredient due to its unique abilities to interact with the skin and sweat glands. Alumium
ions impact the eccrine–gland ducts right near your skin's surface. These ions are drawn directly into

Looking closely at the brain, researchers found two to three times the levels of aluminum in those
impacted by Alzheimer's than in a normal brain. The element was also found in neurofibrillary
tangles within the brain, and rabbits injected with aluminum were more likely to form these tangles.
As research regarding this disease has progressed, less emphasis has been placed on tangles and
more on brain plaque and genetic risk factors in regards to disease development. However,
aluminum in products like deodorant and in drinking water sources may still play a contributing
role, even if it is not the primary

The Negative Aspects Of Living In A Disposable Society
It is a fact that disposable society is beneficial to a country since it can lead to innovation which
improves living standard. Is it undoubtedly a curse to live in a disposable society? What are the
negative aspects of living in a disposable society? According to one author, "Throwing away... may
soon lead us to feel that marriages are throw–away items as well and...on a global scale countries"
(Slade 228). Perhaps it is a curse to live in a disposable society because of cost, environmental and
social problems. If people live in a disposable society, they will find it a curse because they will face
cost problems. In particular, individuals are unfortunate to live in a consumerist society since they
will have expenditure problems. First of all, people decrease their cell phone life cycle as they
replace their phone with a newer model. If individuals saw there is an advertiser about the newest
model with a newer design(better function) (bigger storage) which motivate people to replace it.

Disposable Coffee Landfill
The love of coffee has the Australian people drinking 50,000 cups of coffee every half hour and in
one year that equals to approximately 3 billion takeaway cups (Sustainability Victoria, 2017). The
disposable coffee cups are then disposed of and are going into landfill. According to Richard Fine,
from Bio Pak, 90 per cent of disposable coffee cups end in landfill, with an estimated of 62,000
kilograms of plastic waste going into landfill per year (Whyte, 2016). The disposable cups are used
for only minutes, however, are in landfill for fifty years (Keep Cup, 2017). Potter (2017) also states

The Bag It : The Dangers Of Plastics?
Every time my family and I go grocery shopping we end up having numerous plastic bags after
unloading the food. For the most part we save these bags, keeping them underneath the sink in case
we need to use them for something else later on. However, we have done such a great job at saving
these bags that they have begun to take up space. As such, we have recently started throwing most of
them in the garbage. After watching the Bag It documentary in my English class I begin to realize
how much plastic we actually end up throwing away just in these plastic bags, and how wasteful it
is.
It has become rather common today to dismiss this danger of plastic bags to our environment. In the
documentary Bag It, Jeb Berrier makes a strong case against the use of plastic bags and plastic in
general. Jeb Berrier claims he is just an "average guy", who has a passion for this subject and wants
to make a change in the world. Although he does admit that plastic is quite useful, he mainly argues
against it. He takes a good hour and a half to inform the viewers of the danger of plastic in many
areas of life, and how exactly we can fix it. Filled with many statistics, interviews and video clips of
emotionally triggering subjects, Berrier makes a very convincing argument. His use of catchy,
almost silly music, makes his documentary less academic and allows the average person to relate
more efficiently to the somewhat dry subject.
This "average guy" takes us on a journey through at least a few

Disposable People Book Review
In Kevin Bales' novel, Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, he examines
modern slavery across the modern world in a number of different countries. For this report, I will be
looking at the book's fourth chapter entitled "Brazil – Life on the Edge". Its opening section details
how the Amazon rainforest's destruction has forced the migration of many people away from their
traditional homelands and, in some horrific cases, how this forced some of these people in slavery.
The groups I read about included enslaved native Brazilians, African–Americans, and the charcoal
miners of the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. The main yolk that the slaves of
Brazil burden under is that of charcoal miners, among other underground ... Show more content on

Most of these enslaved charcoal miners are in this position because of extreme poverty and
desperation, the offer that the slavers made was too good to refuse – as it gave the men a way to feed
their families. One of these men recalls how he was recruited by the slavers, his name is Renaldo.
He tells the story of how he grew up in a rural, poor area of the Brazilian countryside. When we was
of age, he went into the city to look for work, only to discover that there was too little work and too
much crime for him to stay there, so he decided to move to Minas Gerais where he heard work was
available. A "cat" (slaver) recruited him and some other men with offers of steady work, good food,
and fair wages. The offer was too good to refuse and so Renaldo and the other men piled into the
back of a truck and drove off into the countryside, along the way, they stopped at a café for lunch
and the "cat" paid for all their food. The men then proceeded to head to the charcoal mine and it is
there that they found out how horrible their situation would be in the mines – they would have to
pay off all of their food's debt, the cost of the trip, and the money the "cat" gave to their families.
This case is just one instance of the cruelty and dehumanization that a myriad of people experience

Disposable People Book Report
As I explored the way a society lives in an interconnectedness world, it brought two words into
mind. Interdependent and associated. An Interconnected world in a new globalized environment can
be explained by comparing something you do every day. These everyday rituals you make take apart
of are connected to our contemporary society we live in. To give some basic information on what I
will be discussing. To start off, there are a few key terms I am going to discuss to better enhance the
understanding of this topic. Globalization occurs when it "captures elements of a widespread
perception that there is a broadening, deepening and speeding up of world–wide interconnectedness

What I would like any one to get from this topic is that slavery could exist in a many forms to
deceive or mistreat people that are unaware of their rights while being enslavement. This new form
of slavery is bribed. Just because it is not visually seen to you does not mean it does not occur.
Contemporary enslavement occurs everywhere in this world. Also, I want it to be understood that
this new idea of slavery can be interrelated with three factors. The rapid growth in population, which
makes it hard for the government to physically keep track of how many people exist in today's
societies. Due to the rapid population growth, the population has flooded the world's labor markets
with millions of underprivileged, distressed people. Farmers are another target for people with the
power to enslave humans to dehumanize poor farmers due to the modernized agriculture. Rapid
economic change in evolving nations has elevated corruption and violence, abolishing social rules
that might once have sheltered the most vulnerable individuals. Disposable People connects well
with the topic of enslavement in the contemporary society because it gives readers a vivid image of
enslavement in post slavery and new slavery in this

with newly invested manufacturing technology in place, provides a great opportunity to preempt
competition and thus enhance its positioning. However, 1 Day Acuvue potentially flourishes by

Recommendation
We recommend that the company extend its promotional strategy used in the western regional
launch to the national launch by spending $12.8 million for advertising (=$1.6mil x 2 x 4 regions),
while continuing to offer $50 rebate and 5 day free trial. The price reduction to ECPs recommended
earlier will strengthen the "push" strategy by increasing their gross margin.
Distribution
A 1% change in ECP coverage (390 ECP) contributes to 5.4% increase in the number of new
customers (approximately 45,000), which in turn generates an incremental net contribution of
$20.75 million. Based on the experience from the Western regional launch, we recommend that
Vistakon increase their sales force nationwide in order to cover more ECPs and acquire more new
customers. In doing so, the company needs to compare the geographical dispersion of ECP with the
cost of hiring local sales representatives.
Conclusion
In summary, we recommend to Vistakon management the following:
1. Prioritize on "part time users" – as noted above, those who have high income and are therefore
relatively price insensitive, who have active lifestyles, and frequently travel on business
2. Charge 10% premium over previous cost per lens to customers
Price discriminate based on purchase volume (=volume discount)
Improve the gross margin of ECP by lowering price
3. Continue the advertising and promotion as it did in

Baby Bottoms And Environmental Conundrums: Disposable Diapers
In the article " Baby bottoms and environmental conundrums: disposable diapers and the

that disposable baby diapers cause harm to people and the environment when in landfills, and in
some cases they get shipped off to other countries when the landfills get filled. Diapers make up 5%
of household waste and 1% to 3% of solid waste in the United States (Marianne B Sutton; Michael

diapers when possible to minimize the amount of disposable diapers being thrown out. The
credibility of the authors is seen in the background of the authors. Marianne B Sutton and Michael

Disadvantages Of Disposable Diapers
P&G has invested hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising specifically to customers that

compared to cloth diapers – as they were made out to be. Research conducted by Arthur D. Little,
Inc. and commissioned by P&G concluded that laundering a cloth diaper over the course of its
lifetime consumes up to six times the water used to manufacture a single–use diaper. That water
consumption, P&G reiterated, was comparable in impact to the waste produced by disposables.
While these research and marketing efforts did not negate the debate entirely, it did manage to
dissipate the major fears in the minds of parents regarding the ... Show more content on

Through a longstanding partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), P&G is
collaborating to incorporate computational fluid dynamics based technology to develop software
tools that simulate how to insert and layer materials to enhance the performance of diaper design
and the manufacturing process. It is also offering this technology to its small and mid–sized
suppliers so that they can be cost efficient and provide better products.
If P&G and Pampers will maintain its dominance on the disposable diaper market into the future, it
will be determined by how carefully and continuously it will manage the ever–changing ecosystem.

Bag It : Documentary Review
"Bag It" Documentary Review
Every time my family and I go grocery shopping we end up having numerous plastic bags after
unloading the food. For the most part we save these bags, keeping them underneath the sink in case
we need to use them for something else later on. However, we have done such a great job at saving
these bags that they have begun to take up space. As such we have recently started throwing most of
them in the garbage. After watching the Bag It documentary in my English class I begin to realize
how much plastic we actually end up throwing away just in these plastic bags, and how wasteful it
is.
It has become rather common today to dismiss this danger of plastic bags to our environment. In the
documentary Bag It, Jeb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After Berrier saw the problem, he couldn't stop seeing it, plastic was everywhere! So, he took some
time to do research and show the world what the danger truly is with all this plastic. Yes, sure there
is plastic everywhere, so what? Why is this a problem? Berrier uses this documentary to explain just
that. To bring this big problem to the light, he covers three main topics: Single use disposable items
and the effect on our environment, ocean health, and human health.
The first question Jeb answers is why there is so much plastic around the world in our environment.
It starts with the mass production of single use disposable items. A "single use disposable item" is
simply an item that you can only use once and then it is disposed of. Berrier points out how so many
of our items we buy in today's society is, or is wrapped in this kind of single plastic. For example, as
the main issue of his documentary, plastic bags are single use disposable items, and are found in
almost every single store in America. In this part of the presentation he uses logos to get his point
across. Presenting facts such as this one: "the United States uses roughly– estimates are about 100
billion plastic bags per a year", which makes his argument more convincing. However, he does not
cite his sources very well, and never tells us where these facts are coming from, making his claims a
little less credible. While discussing this, he shows how even apples can

Product Packaging Of Disposable Razors
Product packaging is usually the first this one sees when shopping. Certain products are specifically
marketed toward men or women because many of these products can only be used by a man or a
woman. However, there are many products that are, or should be gender neutral, yet are still
marketed to a specific sex. I will address five such products and discuss how this expresses the
different expectations of men and women. The first of these products is disposable razors. This
handy product has taken the country by storm over the past thirty years or so. I remember when I
was growing up, disposable razors were mostly used by women and the packaging was quite gender
neutral. Yet now when I walked into the local drug store and walk down the razor isle there are so
many to choose from; and, they are gender specific. The packaging for razors marketed to men are
in black, dark blues, oranges and a multitude of greens. They have names like Flex, Mach, and
Metal, all names with a hard, uber–masculine feel. On the other side of the isle are the women's
razors. They sport names like Venus, Soleil, and Silk; all having an undeniably feminine feel. They
are generally packaged in one color, pink, which for most Americans is the color associated with
femininity. When one used to hear of "body wash", it was a female thing, i.e. women use body wash
and men use bar soap. This is so not true these days, with so many companies marketing body
washes for men. And, one such product that is a

Difference Between Cloth And Cloth Diapers
Cloth diapers versus disposable diapers there are many similarities and differences to consider. First
there is health & environmental, no matter the choice one makes it must be safe for your child and
our planet. Second there is conveniences and price which is a big concern for many working
families, and last but most important is comfort. So as we look at the differences and in some cases
similarities we will be able to make a clear decision on which one would best fit one's life style. As
we go through the similarities and differences we will see that the decision will be purely based on
personal preferences.
Cloth diapers have changes through the years since safety pins and special folding, they now have
Velcro and snap closures and are just about as quick to change as a disposable diaper. Cloth diapers
come in many different styles, flat, fitted, pockets and all–in–ones. Some of the biggest downfalls
with cloth diapers is the washing of the diaper and leaking because it does not have the absorption
that disposable diapers have. Cloth diapers are also hard to deal with when away from home because
you have to take the dirty ones with you. One of the most important aspects of cloth diapers are they
are safer for the environment because they do not have chemicals like dioxins in them like
disposable diapers do. Cloth diaper choices have gained popularity in recent years with so many
sizes and inserts." Cloth Diapers are environment–friendly dumping virtually nothing at landfills
and not contributing to pollution". ". (What to expect, 2017) Cloth diapers are made of cotton fiber,
microfiber, wool and hemp.
There are many advantages to using disposable diapers except for the environmental aspect because
"disposable diapers account for 3.4 million tons of landfill waste per year and do not decompose".
(What to expect, 2017) Disposable diapers are convenient when not at home, although disposable
diapers are very absorbent some babies might be allergic to the chemicals in the absorbent.
Disposable diapers are less likely to leak and therefore your babies will sleep longer through the
night, disposable diapers are more expensive, because when using cloth diapers you can use inserts
and reuse the same diaper

How Do Preemie Diapers
Pampers are the number one selling diaper brand. They now introduced the preemie diaper in 2002.
Preemie diapers were specifically tailored for premature babies at the lowest of one to two pounds.
The creator, Susan Ludwig's inspiration behind it all was after the birth of her third child. At the
time, she was rooming with another mother who had premature baby and felt lost and heartbroken.
Seeing this woman in distress gave her the idea of this type of diaper, after all, preemie babies are
"the most delicate and most fragile." ("Pampers" 1). After asking many nurses to critique on the
diaper they currently use; they had finally come up with the perfect diaper ("Pampers" 1). The
Pampers diapers advertisement by Saatchi and Saatchi promoting the newest Preemie diapers give
the best examples of how the Pampers company really allures their consumers by using emotion
(pathos), credibility (ethos), and reasoning (logos). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As the advertisement goes on, more and more premature babies are being shown, their parents and
families at the hospital spending time with them. The ad then cuts to one of the family's home. The
advertisement then shows a recently completed nursery with a banner saying "Welcome Home".
Afterwards, a premature baby is shown starting to smile as the screen cuts to say "Everyday is a
fight when you arrive early" "and we're proud to be in your corner". Then the preemie diaper is
shown before a mother starts to give her first diaper change to her baby. At last, The babies are

The Disposable Rockets By Curtis Sittenfield And John Updike
Two writers, Curtis Sittenfield and John Updike have written pieces that are insightful works about
the lives of men and women. The works are written in different styles. While Sittenfield's Your Life
as A Girl describes the struggles of a girl growing up, Updike's the Disposable Rockets describes the
physical and psychological charactericts of men while also briefly describing his own life
experiences. Both of these writings express a similar controlling idea about the harmful effects that
social pressures can have on the lives of men and women. Similarities can also be seen in these two
works when the frustration of dealing with one's own body is expressed. A controlling idea that links
both of these work together is that the expectations placed on men and women by society can be
damaging. This idea is seen in Disposable Rocket when Updike asserts that the social pressure to
men to behave recklessly can cause harm, "The number of men who do lasting damage to their
young bodies is striking; war and car accidents aside, secondary–school sports, with the approval of
parents and the encouragement of brutish coaches, take a fearful toll of skulls and knees" (Updike,
1993. 2). The pressure to men to act recklessly clearly has a large margin for error. Reckless actions
such as war, sports, and various stunts can lead to serious injury and death. Clearly we can see that
the societal pressure placed on men to behave in a reckless way can have a detrimental effect on

Diapers Lab Report
Purpose:
The purpose of this experiment was to figure out which brand of diapers has the highest absorbency,
out of Huggies, Pamper and the no name brand.
Hypothesis:
I believe that the Huggies diaper will be the best overall. I believe this because; it is the most
expensive, most inflated, and is the densest. The structure also seemed to have the ability to hold
more fluid compared to the others, this made it very reliable.
Materials:
~ Three (or more if you wish) brands of diapers *We used Huggies, Pampers, and the no name
brand.
~ Writing utensils
~ Water *We used approximately 1L
~ Food colouring (optional) *We used different colours for each trail.

~ Huggies became heavy; but kept the water in even after we squeezed it.
NO NAME
~ First interval, absorbed surprisingly fast.
~ 2nd driest from the bottoms.
~ Didn't collect as much at the side compared to the other two.
~ When we squeezed it, it held up pretty well. Conclusion:
The purpose of the experiment was to determine which brand of diapers has the highest absorbency,
out of Huggies, Pamper and the No Name brand. Our experiment was simple. It consisted of three
different trials; in each, we changed a variable. In the first trail, we poured the 60mL through three
interval, we let the 20mL sit for two minutes, between the sections. During the second trial, we
poured the whole 60mL at one. Finally, in the last trial we poured three segments of 80mL, waiting
about 30 second to 70 second in between. I found it interest that how big of an impact the little

2) (Jane McConnell, 1998, "The Joy of Cloth Diapers") Disposable diapers subjects your babies skin
to a chemical by–product of the paper bleaching process known as Dioxin. Trace quantities may
exist in the diapers themselves and the chemical has been known to cause birth defects, liver
damage, and skin diseases.
3) Babies exposed to questionable chemicals. Sodium polyacrylate (Jane McConnell, 1998, "The
Joy of Cloth Diapers) this is what makes "superabsorbent" diapers so absorbent. This material
absorbs up to 100 times its weight in water. (Candace Brecevic, 2000, "Disposing of Disposables")
Studies show that when this chemical becomes wet it is even more absorbent and pulls moisture
from baby's body. Sodium polyacrylate is the same substance that was removed from tampons in
1985 because of its link to toxic shock syndrome. No studies have been done on the long–term
effects of this chemical being in contact with a baby's reproductive organs 24 hours a day for
upwards of two years.
4) Feel dry when wet. Less frequent changing. Longer exposure to bacteria from urine, which can
cause diaper rash or other bacterial infections. Plastic does not breath to let out the ammonia formed
in the bacterial breakdown of urine.
5) With all the chemicals (2000, "Disposable Diapers Linked to Asthma") A Study published in the

Diaper Rash Essay
A great concern for parents is how to protect their baby's bottoms. It is easy for little ones to become
susceptible to irritated bottoms known as diaper rash. Diaper rash is often related to the care of the
bottom throughout the day. A study of one month old infants found 54% of those using single–use
diapers had rashes and 16% severe rashes. Only 18% of those using cloth had rashes and 0% had
severe rashes. (Weiner, F., Journal of Pediatrics, Sept. 1979.)
Diaper Rash Causes
Irritation due to constant wetting and wiping dry the skin as well as exposure to different
environmental substances will cause the skin to breakdown. Small children will develop redness,
infections, small bumps and roughness spots on the bottom. The most common irritants are residues
from different types of soap, exposure to stool and urine to long, bacteria from stool or urine,
perfumes, certain types of baby wipes, strong detergents and even certain types of disposable
diapers. It is best to avoid all products with alcohol or lanolin on small children's bottoms. The first
year of life parents can expect for their baby's bottom to be quite sensitive, and there will need to be
extra protection for it.

However, there are times such as when a baby is trying new foods, teething, or have been exposed to
a soil diaper too long that you will notice this problem. When small babies are teething alkaline is
most likely to produce and be present in the urine; this will lead to breakdown and irritation. If a
child is allergic to a new food, they might also have a problem with irritation. There is no doubt if
you leave a child to long in a soil diaper, there are negative consequences for the little one. Many
times that bottom will become immediately red and rash will

Beta Cells : The Disposable Rise Of Diabetes
The researchers from the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State University
developed a non–invasive solution that may control glucose level more responsively. The friendly–
option solution uses artificial beta cells, which releases insulin into the bloodstream when glucose
levels rise.
The AβCs are encased by a two–layered lipid membrane like a natural cell and imitates the natural
function of the body to control blood sugar. A normal person has a pancreas with beta cells that store
insulin, a hormone that keeps the blood sugar from getting high, and releases it when needed. But
people with type 1 diabetes and some with type 2 diabetes have dysfunctional or deficiency in beta
cells, which causes the uncontrollable rise of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. Pen – Pens use needles as well to deliver insulin but easier to use compared with syringes. Its
main advantage is that you can see how much insulin is left in the cartridge. However, pens are
expensive and not all insulin formulas have pen forms.
3. Pump – Pumps are like pagers worn on your belt or in a pocket. It supplies the body with insulin
24 hours a day through a needle attached to a flexible plastic tube. You can boost the insulin amount
by pressing a button. The main advantage of this device is the steady release of insulin to manage
glucose level better. Disadvantages of using the device include troublesome because you need to
attach the pump all the time and changing of the needle to reduce the risk of infection.
4. Jet Injector – Jet injectors use very high pressure to push fine spray of insulin through the skin
pores. The main advantage of jet injectors is it does not require any needle to work. The drawbacks
are the uneven amount of insulin received by the body and may hurt more than needles.
5. Inhaler – Inhalers contain a rapid–acting insulin and must be used before meals. The main
advantage of this device is that the drug peaks in the bloodstream in about 15 to 20 minutes, and
clears the body in two to three hours. The main disadvantage of this device is it cannot be used by
people who smoke or have chronic lung disorders.

Cloth Diapers Research
My topic is the diaper. My central idea is disposable and cloth diapers for babies. Disposable diapers
were important because you didn't have to wash your diapers anymore and they were good for the
go. These were so successful because everyone needed them for their babies because they were easy
to use. The site Diaper Jungle said, "Cloth diapers were generally the only option available." Which
leads to everyone buying them for gere babies. First, www.diaperjungle.com said, "The first
disposable absorbent pad used as a diaper was made from unbleached creped cellulose tissue (held
in rubber pants) in 1942." So the first waterproof cloth diapers didn't come until 1946. So from 1946

Pampers Case Study
Pampers: Let's Wipe Baby Butts Pampers is an extremely well–known business that pioneered the
technology that is disposable diapers. When one is watching television, diaper advertisement are
almost exclusive to disposable varieties. This was not the case just fifty years ago during the era that
Pampers first hit the market; reusable cloth diapers were the preferred method of parents just two
generations ago. Pampers has revolutionized the family, economy, environment and culture as a
whole in western societies. Picture the heart–warming scene of a grandfather changing his infant
grandson's diaper in the 1950s. Just as the baby is cute and charming as any other, what is contained
by his diapers is just as unsightly and unpleasant as any other. Lucky for present day parents, this
grandfather decided to use his engineering mindset to create an easier and more sanitary method of
diapers using his own grandchildren as testers ("History" 1). The grandfather described is Victor
Mills. Mills worked for Procter & Gamble Co. at this time and used his connections to the company
to create what is now known Pampers disposable diapers. Pampers first hit the market in 1961 and
have since changed parenting. In the 1960s, Pampers first began new, inventive methods to keeping
babies dry and comfortable. Then, in the 1970s, Pampers replaced the pin with tape to improve
safety and produced more varieties such as toddler, newborn and premature infant sizes. The 1980s
and 1990s saw even more

The Disposable People In The Handmaid's Tale By Margaret...
"Disposable people", a prominent theme of The Handmaid's Tale, is a concept that describes the
people who are possessed as property and are exploited under the owner's control. The Handmaid's
Tale, which is one of the best–sellers of Margaret Atwood written in West Berlin and Alabama in the
mid–1980s, is a narration of Offred about the futuristic society of Gilead where the population is
severely reduced and in an attempt to raise it, the government captures fertile women and trains
them into Handmaids. In the book, people who are considered to be valuable or disposable

The punishment for the people at the bottom of society is a suspended sentence or being tortured to
death. "The three bodies hang there, even with the white sacks over their heads looking curiously
stretched, like chickens strung up by the necks in a meatshop window; like birds with their wings
clipped, like flightless birds, wrecked angels." (Atwood 319) This is a tremendous punishment not
only because it ends the life of a person, but it is also a scary lesson for others. The images of
prisoners hanging on the Wall in Salvagings referring to Nazi regime during the period 1933–1945
led by Hitler. Besides, this execution shoes the state's harshness toward crimes in society and
demonstrates that Gilead is always concerned about its citizens' safety. As a result, those throw–
away people cannot change their lives, especially the innocent. The next punishment is being sent to
the Colonies, the hell of the world, when they attempt to oppose the government or take action
against the genders. "It was about life in the Colonies. In the Colonies, they spend their time
cleaning up. They're very clean–minded these days. Sometimes it's just bodies, after a battle. The
ones in city ghettoes are the worst, they're left around longer, they get rottener. This bunch doesn't
like dead bodies lying around, they're afraid of a plague or something. So the women in the Colonies
there do the burning. The other Colonies are worse, though, the toxic dumps and the radiation
spills." (Atwood 287) The inhumanity of Gileadean government is evident through this quotation.
The people there are never considered human beings because they have no right and are exploited
until death as slaveries. Indeed, the Gilead state symbolizes a brutal dictatorship. And the most
barbarous punishment that not only the disposable people but also the entire citizens suffer is the
psychological torture.

Disposable Soma Theory Of Aging
An Overview of Historical Theories of Human Evolution & Aging
Disposable Soma Theory of Aging
The relationship between infertility and lifespan is unique because it serves as a juncture of the
fields of evolutionary biology and epidemiology. As such, relevant theories regarding the bond
between fertility and longevity define their models in an evolutionary context, and depend on
studies that examine population demographics to support them. Given that these theories are
evolutionary in their perspective, they usually gravitate around the trade–off or "compromise"
dogma widely accepted within the field of evolutionary biology. One such example is the
Antagonistic Pleiotropy Theory of Aging developed by George Williams in 1957. Antagonistic

It is essential to note that infertility is not itself a disease, but rather, is associated with a variety of
afflictions in both men and women. Some groundbreaking studies have even identified instances of
increased fitness after the conclusion of the reproductive lifespan. Lahdenperä et. al. is quick to
point out that the females of most animal species reproduce until they die, whereas contrastingly,
human females continue to thrive even after ceasing reproduction, or after the onset of menopause
(2004). As mentioned earlier, an individual's reproductive success is highly dependent on their
offspring's probable reproductive success. Keeping this definition of reproductive success in mind,
Lahdenperä et. al. used multi–generational demographic records of Finns and Canadians between
the 18th and 19th century to outline their theory that women gain fitness by increasing post–
reproduction lifespan (2004). Through analyzing the data of these 18th–19th century Canadians and
Finns, Lahdenperä et. al. found that women with longer post–reproductive life spans have more
grandchildren, and thus have enhanced fitness (2004). The study attributes this relationship to the
fact that post–reproductive mothers enhance their offspring's reproductive success by allowing them
to breed earlier and more often, while also providing maternal guidance and

The Effects Of Plastic Pollution On California

  • 1. The Effects Of Plastic Pollution On California Plastic Pollution in California The beauty of California is slowly fading away and as environmentalists would say, "There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surrounding" (Carson, 366). According to the findings revealed by research foundations in California, marine life is and has been in great danger as a result of plastic remains that accumulates in the Ocean. In his article Daniel Woods states, "Approximately eighty percent of remains found in Oceans are made of plastic that originates from urban runoffs such as plastic trash carried away from landfills, trucks, as well as garbage containers, marinas, ports and construction trash" (Wood, 20). Furthermore, these results also revealed that marine remains where made up of disposable plastic products that constitute food packaging as well as containers that are ever present and contain precious resources that can be used unsustainably. These issues have affected the state critically and have lead me to research the reasons behind the banning of plastic pollution, their economic impact, harm resulting from plastic pollution, as well as federal concerns on plastic contamination. The reason behind banning plastic pollution in California was triggered by the fact that disposable plastic bags as well as food containers were filling Oceans with a lot of plastic remains. Additionally, California's tourism economy has suffered tremendously interfering with the forty ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Disposable Society Heather McCoy SOC 247 Professor Eck Research Proposal Our Disposable Society As Americans, we are privileged to many luxuries. Not every country allows its citizens to start their own businesses or provides the education it takes to run a company. Our free market system allows for many different goods and services to compete fairly for people's dollars. The freedom given to us by our forefathers grants the opportunity to choose between these goods and services. Put all these realities together and it's no wonder we have so many different forms of products. A relatively recent phenomenon that has subsequently emerged in our society is the prevalence of disposable products. Because of their convenience, efficiency, and relatively ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In fact, we throw away 2 billion disposable razors and 16 billion disposable diapers each year, this number growing each year as our hyper consumption of disposable products continues. Roughly eighty percent of all household trash goes to landfills, which are hazards unto themselves. Toxic chemicals leak out of the landfills and contaminate ground water and surface water. Also, space for new landfills is constantly needed, but no one wants a landfill near them, thus creating political problems and angry citizens ( Bormann and Kellert 100–102). Although some disposable products, such as plastic cups and cameras, can be recycled, the recycling rates are still quite low ( only thirty percent of household waste gets recycled). Britt Anne Bernheim, in her article "Can We Cure Our Throwaway Habits by Imposing the True Social Cost on Disposable Products?", brings up another negative point about disposables. "The true social cost of a product includes both the cost of its production and other costs that are not reflected in the product's market price. Examples of costs that are absent from the products price include: the deferred cost of disposal..., and the future cost of depleting domestic and foreign natural resources... Because the market price of disposable consumer products does not reflect their true social cost, the difference must be borne by individuals who are not involved in the production and consumption of those ... • 5. Life Cycle Assessment ( Lca ) Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a technique used to quantify environmental outcomes– energy, materials used, and released wastes– assignable to a product. It assesses the environmental impacts of their supply chain activities as a whole. By looking at the full picture of the activities, a firm such as Procter and Gamble (P&G) could view the environmental tradeoffs of product innovation. In efforts to sustain competitive advantage with their popular–selling item, disposable diapers, the use of LCA aides in making decisions for producing greener products for its customers, and to reduce environmental footprint. The public is becoming widely concerned with the products effects on resources and the environment. "These effects occur at every stage in a product's life cycle–from the extraction of the raw materials from the ground through the processing, manufacturing, and transportation phases, ending with use and disposal or recycling" (Le–van,1995, p.7,). The present study aims to evaluate the life cycle system of disposable diapers in efforts to assign understanding of the sustainability benefits of Life Cycle Assessment. An LCA–measured environmental improvements analysis in Pampers® diapers reported that, "the sourcing and production of diaper materials contribute most to the environmental indicators evaluated, accounting for ∼84% of all non–renewable energy uses and ∼64% of global warming potential" (Weisbrod and Hoof,2011). The sustainable development study used LCA to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Effects Of Disposable Bags On The Environment Essay The amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gases released by our activities and use for equipment such as air conditioners is far more than ecosystems can absorb. Tree absorb in the gas that is contributing to global warming. They release oxygen in to the atmosphere as well. Normal fluorescents light consume more energy and waste energy resource. Vehicles are a major cause of global warming. Cars and trucks account for nearly one–fifth of all US emissions, emitting around 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and other global–warming gases for every gallon of gas. Plug unused electronics consume electric energy. High–flow sink waste large amount of water. Disposable bags may seem convenient but have proven to be a huge source of pollution. According to research conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency, somewhere between five hundred billion and one trillion disposable bags are used each year around the world. We can save energy by purchasing locally grown and produced foods. The energy used to transport foods from all over the world is extremely high. By buying locally, we can save fuel, as well as help out our community economically. Eating local means, more money stays within our community. Every dollar spent generates twice as much income for the local economy. Local produce is fresher and tastes better because it is usually sold within 24 hours of being picked. If we buy produce at a conventional grocery store, it may have been kept in storage for days or weeks. When we buy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Paper Towel Lab Report Paper towels are invaluable product for cleaning up everyday spills in every household. The United States is the largest consumer of paper towels. In the United States, 50% more paper towels are consumed than Europe and five times more than Latin America. More importantly, we use it daily in my household. With this in mind, I wanted to determine which product on the market absorbs the most and cost effective. Many TV commercials state that their product works the best and therefore I took matter into my own hands and decided to investigate this. My original hypothesis was that Bounty, which has the most commercial advertising that I had seen, would be the most absorbent and economical. The paper towel was invented by Arthur Scott who ... Take two sheets of the first brand of paper towel. Fold and insert them into the water. As you dip the towels, start your stopwatch. After 15 seconds, remove the towels from the measuring cup and squeeze as much water as you can out of the towels into the other bowl. Measure the water in the bowl with 15 ml measuring cup. Make a note of the volume extracted. Repeat 4 times for each brand and write in notebook. The purpose of this experiment was to find out if Bounty was more absorbent than other leading brands. For bounty the average was 47 ml and for Sparkle it was 42 ml. For Sam's Club Members Mark the average was 47 ml. lastly, the average for Walmart generic was 37. My hypothesis was that Bounty would be the most absorbent. But after the experiment, the result showed that Bounty was not better than low costing Sam's Club Members Mark paper towels. Many other people had also conducted similar experiments as mine. For some, their conclusion was similar to mine – they found out that leading brands are not necessarily better than the low cost ones on the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. What Is The Surplus Of Disposable Bonds? The surplus of disposable income makes people want to become an investor or a saver by transferring their excess money to an individual, a company or government that have little in order to meet their immediate needs. This transfer is mostly carried out by a bank or broker and before delving into becoming an investor, it is paramount to take a closer look at the different types of investments, their market and understand how they work and how the diverse investors can plan their investment goals and strategies. In this essay, I am going to discuss what bonds and stock means, list their features, how they are traded, how to calculate an annual rate of return, et al. (Hayes, 2017) Furthermore, the annual rate of return on investment, which is the return created from investment over a particular period of time can be calculated by first knowing the income, the gain or loss in value and the original value at the beginning of the year. Then, the percentage return can be estimated by adding the income and the gain together, then divided by the original value {[income + gain / original value} or {[income + (ending value – original value)] / original value} (Siegal & Yacht, 2009, p. 232) When I buy a share of stock for $100 that pays no dividend ... • 17. Disposable People Summary Kevin Bales' Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy explores the fact that slavery still exists in many different forms throughout the world. Most people believe that slavery ended with the abolition of the slave trade, however slavery just managed to evolve. In Bales' preface to the 2012 edition, Bales mentions that he regrets using the terms 'new slavery' and 'old slavery.' Old slavery is typically regarded as legal ownership where slaves were long–term investments. Slaves were almost always ethnically different from their owners. Today, ownership of human beings is illegal in every country. New slavery is fueled by greed and money. Slaves are not owned legally, but are controlled by violence. These types of slaves are disposed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of the prostitutes are bought at a young age from consensual parents, or recruited. Once the brothel owner or pimp has them, they are beaten into submission and are raped until they are controllable. Prostitutes are hardly paid anything for their services and most of their earnings will go to the brothel owners and pimps. Prostitutes face various risks from being beaten, broken bones and even contracting sexually transmitted diseases. Those that get too old, scarred or diseased to continue working are discarded like trash to fend for themselves. This is a lot like old slavery where the slaves were beaten, hardly made any money for their services and when they got too old they were discarded or sold. Mauretania has abolished slavery many times, yet still most "ex–slaves" do unpaid work for clothing and food, but the government denies that this is slavery. The government states that they aren't really slaves, they are just collateral. Sadly most of these people have accepted this way of life because it offers them a sense of security because there is nothing else to do in such an impoverished country. Same is true with old slavery. Those workers are made to work other people's land, perform jobs for little more than just clothing and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Summary Of 'The Media Torrent And Disposable Feeling' "Supersaturation, or, The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling" I chose to read "Supersaturation, or, The Media Torrent and Disposable Feeling" by Todd Gitlin. It intrigues me by how correct he is about how technology is changing the world by offering things to people they would not have had two hundred years ago. He argues that media is now widely available to anyone anytime. Before the use of technology, media was not readily available to all classes of people. Today, media is now available to all classes of people even those at the poverty level. Media is undoubtedly one of the largest growing technologies in the world. The author gives examples of media in the seventeenth century stating how little they have compared to the unlimited access ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the past, people had to learn how to play an instrument, go see an acquaintance that did know how to play or they could pay to go to the theater. Today that is not the case. If someone wants to listen to music yet again all they need to do is pull out a phone, computer or tablet and music is there at the push of a button. It is also easier for someone to play an instrument without actually learning to play an instrument. Smule is an excellent example of a company that does just that, allows you to play an instrument with out playing one. The company has come out with several different apps for smart devices. One made for playing the piano is called Magic Piano. This app allows you to follow the screen and as dots scroll down you push them with your finger. This gives the illusion of you pressing keys on the piano. One other company came out with a game for your television game console which gives you and your friends the illusion of being in a rock band. The game was literally called Rock Band. • 23. Write An Argumentative Essay On Alzheimer's Deodorant plays an essential role in your daily routine, but while your deodorant may be keeping you dry and odor–free, it could also be increasing your risks for serious health problems in the future. When you turn your store–bought deodorant container over, you'll most likely see a long list of ingredients you can't even pronounce, including one in particular that has gained a lot of press in recent years, aluminum. Why Aluminum? Aluminum has been present in both deodorants and antiperspirant since the late 19th century. While deodorant itself underwent various incarnations up until the late 1970s, aluminum has remained a primary ingredient due to its unique abilities to interact with the skin and sweat glands. • 25. The Negative Aspects Of Living In A Disposable Society It is a fact that disposable society is beneficial to a country since it can lead to innovation which improves living standard. Is it undoubtedly a curse to live in a disposable society? What are the negative aspects of living in a disposable society? According to one author, "Throwing away... may soon lead us to feel that marriages are throw–away items as well and...on a global scale countries" (Slade 228). Perhaps it is a curse to live in a disposable society because of cost, environmental and social problems. If people live in a disposable society, they will find it a curse because they will face cost problems. In particular, individuals are unfortunate to live in a consumerist society since they will have expenditure problems. First of all, people decrease their cell phone life cycle as they replace their phone with a newer model. If individuals saw there is an advertiser about the newest model with a newer design(better function) (bigger storage) which motivate people to replace it. According to a 2016 study, Global smartphone sales reached 1500 million units in 2015 from 140 million units in 2008 at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 40.3% from 2008 to 2015 = The smartphone industry had gone to 1500 million units in 2015 from 140 million units in 2008. According to Richard Fine, from Bio Pak, 90 per cent of disposable coffee cups end in landfill, with an estimated of 62,000 kilograms of plastic waste going into landfill per year (Whyte, 2016). • 31. The Bag It : The Dangers Of Plastics? Every time my family and I go grocery shopping we end up having numerous plastic bags after unloading the food. For the most part we save these bags, keeping them underneath the sink in case we need to use them for something else later on. However, we have done such a great job at saving these bags that they have begun to take up space. As such, we have recently started throwing most of them in the garbage. After watching the Bag It documentary in my English class I begin to realize how much plastic we actually end up throwing away just in these plastic bags, and how wasteful it is. It has become rather common today to dismiss this danger of plastic bags to our environment. In the documentary Bag It, Jeb Berrier makes a strong case against the use of plastic bags and plastic in general. Jeb Berrier claims he is just an "average guy", who has a passion for this subject and wants to make a change in the world. Although he does admit that plastic is quite useful, he mainly argues against it. He takes a good hour and a half to inform the viewers of the danger of plastic in many areas of life, and how exactly we can fix it. Filled with many statistics, interviews and video clips of emotionally triggering subjects, Berrier makes a very convincing argument. His use of catchy, almost silly music, makes his documentary less academic and allows the average person to relate more efficiently to the somewhat dry subject. Disposable People Summary In Disposable People, Kevin Bales tells the story of one man working as a slave in a Pakistani brick kiln: His brother–in–law had left the kiln in search of better work, as a result this man was taken captive by the owner of the kiln where the brother–in–law had worked. "I had never been to this kiln before in my life and I had never worked there; I didn't owe this man any money ... The kiln owner just said that was tough, he was holding my brother and me as ransom against my brother–in–law's debt. At the kiln they made me work and told me that if I tried to escape they would beat me or shoot me." Bales also describes how victims are entrapped in charcoal production in Brazil: Recruiters, called gatos(cats), come to the abundant slums in eastern ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Disposable People Book Review In Kevin Bales' novel, Disposable People: New Slavery in the Global Economy, he examines modern slavery across the modern world in a number of different countries. For this report, I will be looking at the book's fourth chapter entitled "Brazil – Life on the Edge". Its opening section details how the Amazon rainforest's destruction has forced the migration of many people away from their traditional homelands and, in some horrific cases, how this forced some of these people in slavery. The groups I read about included enslaved native Brazilians, African–Americans, and the charcoal miners of the states of Mato Grosso do Sul and Minas Gerais. The main yolk that the slaves of Brazil burden under is that of charcoal miners, among other underground ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most of these enslaved charcoal miners are in this position because of extreme poverty and desperation, the offer that the slavers made was too good to refuse – as it gave the men a way to feed their families. One of these men recalls how he was recruited by the slavers, his name is Renaldo. He tells the story of how he grew up in a rural, poor area of the Brazilian countryside. When we was of age, he went into the city to look for work, only to discover that there was too little work and too much crime for him to stay there, so he decided to move to Minas Gerais where he heard work was available. A "cat" (slaver) recruited him and some other men with offers of steady work, good food, and fair wages. The offer was too good to refuse and so Renaldo and the other men piled into the back of a truck and drove off into the countryside, along the way, they stopped at a café for lunch and the "cat" paid for all their food. The men then proceeded to head to the charcoal mine and it is there that they found out how horrible their situation would be in the mines – they would have to pay off all of their food's debt, the cost of the trip, and the money the "cat" gave to their families. This case is just one instance of the cruelty and dehumanization that a myriad of people experience throughout the world, every single ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

An Interconnected world in a new globalized environment can be explained by comparing something you do every day. These everyday rituals you make take apart of are connected to our contemporary society we live in. To give some basic information on what I will be discussing. To start off, there are a few key terms I am going to discuss to better enhance the understanding of this topic. Globalization occurs when it "captures elements of a widespread perception that there is a broadening, deepening and speeding up of world–wide interconnectedness in all aspects of life, from the cultural to the criminal, the financial ... What I would like any one to get from this topic is that slavery could exist in a many forms to deceive or mistreat people that are unaware of their rights while being enslavement. This new form of slavery is bribed. Just because it is not visually seen to you does not mean it does not occur. Contemporary enslavement occurs everywhere in this world. Also, I want it to be understood that this new idea of slavery can be interrelated with three factors. The rapid growth in population, which makes it hard for the government to physically keep track of how many people exist in today's societies. Due to the rapid population growth, the population has flooded the world's labor markets with millions of underprivileged, distressed people. Farmers are another target for people with the power to enslave humans to dehumanize poor farmers due to the modernized agriculture. Rapid economic change in evolving nations has elevated corruption and violence, abolishing social rules that might once have sheltered the most vulnerable individuals. Case Study of Vistakon and Disposable Contact Lenses Case Study of Vistakon and Disposable Contact Lenses Vistakon is a well–established, overwhelming market leader in the disposable contact lens industry, based on strong brand equity and channels of distribution. Additionally, as a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, Vistakon has considerable resources at its disposal. The launching of 1 Day Acuvue, with newly invested manufacturing technology in place, provides a great opportunity to preempt competition and thus enhance its positioning. However, 1 Day Acuvue potentially flourishes by cannibalizing the company's existing product lines such as Acuvue and Surevue. With a major portion of its sales ($250 million) coming from these products, Vistakon faces significant risk in launching 1 Day ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recommendation We recommend that the company extend its promotional strategy used in the western regional launch to the national launch by spending $12.8 million for advertising (=$1.6mil x 2 x 4 regions), while continuing to offer $50 rebate and 5 day free trial. The price reduction to ECPs recommended earlier will strengthen the "push" strategy by increasing their gross margin. Distribution A 1% change in ECP coverage (390 ECP) contributes to 5.4% increase in the number of new customers (approximately 45,000), which in turn generates an incremental net contribution of $20.75 million. Based on the experience from the Western regional launch, we recommend that Vistakon increase their sales force nationwide in order to cover more ECPs and acquire more new customers. In doing so, the company needs to compare the geographical dispersion of ECP with the cost of hiring local sales representatives. Conclusion In summary, we recommend to Vistakon management the following: 1. Prioritize on "part time users" – as noted above, those who have high income and are therefore relatively price insensitive, who have active lifestyles, and frequently travel on business 2. Charge 10% premium over previous cost per lens to customers

  • 46. Disadvantages Of Disposable Diapers P&G has invested hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising specifically to customers that appreciate the convenience of disposable diapers. However, one of its greatest risks is whether these consumers will continue to value the convenience of disposable diapers, or if they will eventually be convinced that the damage to the environment is more important. Much of P&G's efforts in the recent years have focused on addressing this specific issue. P&G turned to consulting and research firms to prove that disposable diapers were not as evil compared to cloth diapers – as they were made out to be. Research conducted by Arthur D. Little, Inc. and commissioned by P&G concluded that laundering a cloth diaper over the course of its lifetime consumes up to six times the water used to manufacture a single–use diaper. That water consumption, P&G reiterated, was comparable in impact to the waste produced by disposables. For the most part we save these bags, keeping them underneath the sink in case we need to use them for something else later on. However, we have done such a great job at saving these bags that they have begun to take up space. As such we have recently started throwing most of them in the garbage. After watching the Bag It documentary in my English class I begin to realize how much plastic we actually end up throwing away just in these plastic bags, and how wasteful it is. It has become rather common today to dismiss this danger of plastic bags to our environment. In the documentary Bag It, Jeb ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After Berrier saw the problem, he couldn't stop seeing it, plastic was everywhere! So, he took some time to do research and show the world what the danger truly is with all this plastic. Yes, sure there is plastic everywhere, so what? Why is this a problem? Berrier uses this documentary to explain just that. To bring this big problem to the light, he covers three main topics: Single use disposable items and the effect on our environment, ocean health, and human health. The first question Jeb answers is why there is so much plastic around the world in our environment. It starts with the mass production of single use disposable items. A "single use disposable item" is simply an item that you can only use once and then it is disposed of. Berrier points out how so many of our items we buy in today's society is, or is wrapped in this kind of single plastic. For example, as the main issue of his documentary, plastic bags are single use disposable items, and are found in almost every single store in America. In this part of the presentation he uses logos to get his point across. Presenting facts such as this one: "the United States uses roughly– estimates are about 100 billion plastic bags per a year", which makes his argument more convincing. However, he does not cite his sources very well, and never tells us where these facts are coming from, making his claims a little less credible. • 50. Product Packaging Of Disposable Razors Product packaging is usually the first this one sees when shopping. Certain products are specifically marketed toward men or women because many of these products can only be used by a man or a woman. However, there are many products that are, or should be gender neutral, yet are still marketed to a specific sex. I will address five such products and discuss how this expresses the different expectations of men and women. The first of these products is disposable razors. This handy product has taken the country by storm over the past thirty years or so. I remember when I was growing up, disposable razors were mostly used by women and the packaging was quite gender neutral. Yet now when I walked into the local drug store and walk down the razor isle there are so many to choose from; and, they are gender specific. The packaging for razors marketed to men are in black, dark blues, oranges and a multitude of greens. They have names like Flex, Mach, and Metal, all names with a hard, uber–masculine feel. On the other side of the isle are the women's razors. They sport names like Venus, Soleil, and Silk; all having an undeniably feminine feel. They are generally packaged in one color, pink, which for most Americans is the color associated with femininity. When one used to hear of "body wash", it was a female thing, i.e. women use body wash and men use bar soap. This is so not true these days, with so many companies marketing body washes for men. • 52. Difference Between Cloth And Cloth Diapers Cloth diapers versus disposable diapers there are many similarities and differences to consider. First there is health & environmental, no matter the choice one makes it must be safe for your child and our planet. Second there is conveniences and price which is a big concern for many working families, and last but most important is comfort. So as we look at the differences and in some cases similarities we will be able to make a clear decision on which one would best fit one's life style. As we go through the similarities and differences we will see that the decision will be purely based on personal preferences. Cloth diapers have changes through the years since safety pins and special folding, they now have Velcro and snap closures and are just about as quick to change as a disposable diaper. Cloth diapers come in many different styles, flat, fitted, pockets and all–in–ones. Some of the biggest downfalls with cloth diapers is the washing of the diaper and leaking because it does not have the absorption that disposable diapers have. Cloth diapers are also hard to deal with when away from home because you have to take the dirty ones with you. One of the most important aspects of cloth diapers are they are safer for the environment because they do not have chemicals like dioxins in them like disposable diapers do. Cloth diaper choices have gained popularity in recent years with so many sizes and inserts." Cloth Diapers are environment–friendly dumping virtually nothing at landfills and not contributing to pollution". ". (What to expect, 2017) Cloth diapers are made of cotton fiber, microfiber, wool and hemp. There are many advantages to using disposable diapers except for the environmental aspect because "disposable diapers account for 3.4 million tons of landfill waste per year and do not decompose". (What to expect, 2017) Disposable diapers are convenient when not at home, although disposable diapers are very absorbent some babies might be allergic to the chemicals in the absorbent. Disposable diapers are less likely to leak and therefore your babies will sleep longer through the night, disposable diapers are more expensive, because when using cloth diapers you can use inserts and reuse the same diaper ... Preemie diapers were specifically tailored for premature babies at the lowest of one to two pounds. The creator, Susan Ludwig's inspiration behind it all was after the birth of her third child. • 56. The Disposable Rockets By Curtis Sittenfield And John Updike Two writers, Curtis Sittenfield and John Updike have written pieces that are insightful works about the lives of men and women. The works are written in different styles. While Sittenfield's Your Life as A Girl describes the struggles of a girl growing up, Updike's the Disposable Rockets describes the physical and psychological charactericts of men while also briefly describing his own life experiences. Both of these writings express a similar controlling idea about the harmful effects that social pressures can have on the lives of men and women. Similarities can also be seen in these two works when the frustration of dealing with one's own body is expressed. A controlling idea that links both of these work together is that the expectations placed on men and women by society can be damaging. This idea is seen in Disposable Rocket when Updike asserts that the social pressure to men to behave recklessly can cause harm, "The number of men who do lasting damage to their young bodies is striking; war and car accidents aside, secondary–school sports, with the approval of parents and the encouragement of brutish coaches, take a fearful toll of skulls and knees" (Updike, 1993. 2). The pressure to men to act recklessly clearly has a large margin for error. Reckless actions such as war, sports, and various stunts can lead to serious injury and death. Sodium polyacrylate (Jane McConnell, 1998, "The Joy of Cloth Diapers) this is what makes "superabsorbent" diapers so absorbent. This material absorbs up to 100 times its weight in water. Diaper rash is often related to the care of the bottom throughout the day. A study of one month old infants found 54% of those using single–use diapers had rashes and 16% severe rashes. This was not the case just fifty years ago during the era that Pampers first hit the market; reusable cloth diapers were the preferred method of parents just two generations ago. Pampers has revolutionized the family, economy, environment and culture as a whole in western societies. Picture the heart–warming scene of a grandfather changing his infant grandson's diaper in the 1950s. Just as the baby is cute and charming as any other, what is contained by his diapers is just as unsightly and unpleasant as any other. Lucky for present day parents, this grandfather decided to use his engineering mindset to create an easier and more sanitary method of diapers using his own grandchildren as testers ("History" 1). The grandfather described is Victor Mills. Mills worked for Procter & Gamble Co. at this time and used his connections to the company to create what is now known Pampers disposable diapers. Pampers first hit the market in 1961 and have since changed parenting. In the 1960s, Pampers first began new, inventive methods to keeping babies dry and comfortable. Then, in the 1970s, Pampers replaced the pin with tape to improve safety and produced more varieties such as toddler, newborn and premature infant sizes. The 1980s and 1990s saw even more ... • 77. The Disposable People In The Handmaid's Tale By Margaret... "Disposable people", a prominent theme of The Handmaid's Tale, is a concept that describes the people who are possessed as property and are exploited under the owner's control. The Handmaid's Tale, which is one of the best–sellers of Margaret Atwood written in West Berlin and Alabama in the mid–1980s, is a narration of Offred about the futuristic society of Gilead where the population is severely reduced and in an attempt to raise it, the government captures fertile women and trains them into Handmaids. In the book, people who are considered to be valuable or disposable depending on their fertility, genders, and influence on society. Therefore, distinguishing human beings as commodities leads to the consequences of a death sentence, being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The punishment for the people at the bottom of society is a suspended sentence or being tortured to death. "The three bodies hang there, even with the white sacks over their heads looking curiously stretched, like chickens strung up by the necks in a meatshop window; like birds with their wings clipped, like flightless birds, wrecked angels." (Atwood 319) This is a tremendous punishment not only because it ends the life of a person, but it is also a scary lesson for others. The images of prisoners hanging on the Wall in Salvagings referring to Nazi regime during the period 1933–1945 led by Hitler. Besides, this execution shoes the state's harshness toward crimes in society and demonstrates that Gilead is always concerned about its citizens' safety. As a result, those throw– away people cannot change their lives, especially the innocent. The next punishment is being sent to the Colonies, the hell of the world, when they attempt to oppose the government or take action against the genders. "It was about life in the Colonies. In the Colonies, they spend their time cleaning up. They're very clean–minded these days. Sometimes it's just bodies, after a battle. The ones in city ghettoes are the worst, they're left around longer, they get rottener. This bunch doesn't like dead bodies lying around, they're afraid of a plague or something. So the women in the Colonies there do the burning. The other Colonies are worse, though, the toxic dumps and the radiation spills." (Atwood 287) The inhumanity of Gileadean government is evident through this quotation. The people there are never considered human beings because they have no right and are exploited until death as slaveries. Indeed, the Gilead state symbolizes a brutal dictatorship. And the most barbarous punishment that not only the disposable people but also the entire citizens suffer is the psychological torture. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 81. Disposable Soma Theory Of Aging An Overview of Historical Theories of Human Evolution & Aging Disposable Soma Theory of Aging The relationship between infertility and lifespan is unique because it serves as a juncture of the fields of evolutionary biology and epidemiology. As such, relevant theories regarding the bond between fertility and longevity define their models in an evolutionary context, and depend on studies that examine population demographics to support them. Given that these theories are evolutionary in their perspective, they usually gravitate around the trade–off or "compromise" dogma widely accepted within the field of evolutionary biology. One such example is the Antagonistic Pleiotropy Theory of Aging developed by George Williams in 1957. Antagonistic pleiotropy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is essential to note that infertility is not itself a disease, but rather, is associated with a variety of afflictions in both men and women. Some groundbreaking studies have even identified instances of increased fitness after the conclusion of the reproductive lifespan. Lahdenperä et. al. is quick to point out that the females of most animal species reproduce until they die, whereas contrastingly, human females continue to thrive even after ceasing reproduction, or after the onset of menopause (2004). As mentioned earlier, an individual's reproductive success is highly dependent on their offspring's probable reproductive success. Keeping this definition of reproductive success in mind, Lahdenperä et. al. used multi–generational demographic records of Finns and Canadians between the 18th and 19th century to outline their theory that women gain fitness by increasing post– reproduction lifespan (2004). Through analyzing the data of these 18th–19th century Canadians and Finns, Lahdenperä et. al. found that women with longer post–reproductive life spans have more grandchildren, and thus have enhanced fitness (2004). The study attributes this relationship to the fact that post–reproductive mothers enhance their offspring's reproductive success by allowing them to breed earlier and more often, while also providing maternal guidance and ...
