This document outlines the development of a research design for studying how competition and cooperation among tourism stakeholders influences sustainability on small oceanic islands. It will use a qualitative embedded multiple case study approach with three data sources per case. The research questions examine how World Heritage listing, cultural/socioeconomic contexts, and other factors shape stakeholder interactions and sustainability. Case sites will be natural or mixed World Heritage-listed, small, inhabited oceanic islands that successfully conserve natural heritage. Challenges include overcoming mainland biases and allowing an inductive process.
The document summarizes the findings from a mission to assess destination management in Da Nang, Hue, and Quang Nam provinces in Vietnam. Key findings include:
1) The three provinces are at different stages of tourism development, with Da Nang growing rapidly but risking oversupply and stagnation, Hue facing problems of short stays and stagnation, and Quang Nam needing to spread tourism beyond Hoi An.
2) Each province faces issues like seasonality, training staff, managing popular sites, and integrating festivals with tourism. Opportunities exist to promote longer stays, develop new attractions, and improve marketing.
3) Current marketing is done individually by each province, but a joint approach

The Global Partnership for Sustainable Tourism is an international initiative dedicated to promoting sustainability in the tourism industry worldwide. It brings together stakeholders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors to implement successful projects, endorse innovative solutions, and share knowledge. The partnership screens projects based on their contribution to sustainability themes like climate change, biodiversity, and local socioeconomic development. Its goal is to transform tourism by encouraging policies and practices that balance environmental protection, community well-being, and economic growth.
This paper explores the effects of different mechanisms for controlling the number of tourists in small-oceanic-island tourist destinations on the sustainability of their development. It uses a resilience and complex adaptive systems perspective, interrogating the extent to which specific mechanisms can contribute to greater economic globalisation, monopolisation and shifting patterns of competition and cooperation among local and global stakeholders.
A new pathway to sustainability in malaysiaNordin Hasan
This document discusses the need for a new sustainability paradigm in Malaysia and outlines developments that have led to this need. [1] It describes how early sustainability efforts in Malaysia were segregated across environmental, economic, and social pillars. [2] Rio+20 and initiatives like Future Earth call for a more integrated approach to sustainability science that considers interactions between these pillars. [3] Achieving sustainability will require transdisciplinary research collaborations to understand social and environmental dynamics and identify pathways for transformation towards sustainability.

The Göncöl Foundation is a non-profit environmental foundation in Hungary established in 1985 that works to preserve nature, human, and social values. It has over 15 years of experience in education, communication, and conservation projects. The foundation provides services such as competency development training, field research, and organizing conferences to support sustainable development. It partners with other organizations and the private sector to address environmental issues and support biodiversity conservation.
This document summarizes an article that discusses ensuring tourism is inclusive of people with disabilities. It notes that all people are diverse in their abilities and characteristics. The article advocates applying principles of universal design to tourism to make destinations and information accessible to people of all abilities. It questions whether the tourism industry has taken measures to allow people with disabilities to freely participate.
The World Heritage Leadership Programme delivered jointly with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), our sister advisory body to the World Heritage Committee, aims to build the capacity of Conservation practitioners with a people-centred approach to the integration of nature and culture in enhancing the management practices of heritage places. It is a 6-year programme generously funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, with activities also funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Environment and the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration. Our strength is that this is a collaborative programme, where we seek better practice by working together with our colleagues in nature conservation.

The document discusses the role and responsibilities of tour guides. It provides background on tour guiding as a profession and outlines key tasks such as describing points of interest, answering questions, and ensuring safety. It then presents expectancy theory and dependency theory as theoretical frameworks for understanding tour guide motivation and the potential economic dependencies of tourism. Finally, it introduces a conceptual framework for assessing the qualities of tour guides from the perspective of local tourists.

This document provides an agenda and background for a PhD research project analyzing knowledge exchange within a network of subsidiaries from the same country located in an industrial park in China. The research aims to study how the social capital dimensions of the subsidiary network affect knowledge acquisition and sharing. The theoretical framework draws from international business theories on multinational networks and knowledge flows between headquarters and subsidiaries.
The document summarizes key points from a presentation on developing principles to guide the long-term management and preservation of digital heritage collections. It discusses the need to plan for hundreds of years into the future when making decisions around digitization. Examples of proposed principles include selecting standards to enhance interoperability, embedding semantics and context into digitized objects, engaging communities as custodians of heritage, and accounting for diversity in digital repositories. The document concludes by stating that universal principles should guide strategies and decisions in a way that is timeless.

The document discusses barriers and deficits to implementing education for sustainable development (ESD). Some of the main barriers identified include ESD being seen as too demanding, requiring too much work, and a lack of time and money. There is also a perceived lack of reform to education systems and a lack of integration of ESD into policy. A survey of experts identifies a need to increase public awareness, strengthen ESD by focusing on issues like climate change, and involve organizations from different sectors more in ESD efforts. Mobilizing more resources for ESD at national levels is also seen as important.
Design of an Aesthetics Monitoring Program for the GBRMattCurnock
This document describes research into designing an Aesthetics Long-Term Monitoring Program (ALTMP) for the Great Barrier Reef. The research included identifying reef attributes that contribute to aesthetic value, evaluating non-expert ratings as a monitoring method, stakeholder engagement to establish objectives, and field trials. Key findings showed that non-expert ratings can reliably detect changes in aesthetic value between reefs when accounting for observer biases. The ALTMP was designed to integrate human and AI assessments of photographs alongside other monitoring to serve as a proxy for reef health and engage various groups in reef management and restoration.

Discover the Simplified Electron and Muon Model: A New Wave-Based Approach to Understanding Particles delves into a groundbreaking theory that presents electrons and muons as rotating soliton waves within oscillating spacetime. Geared towards students, researchers, and science buffs, this book breaks down complex ideas into simple explanations. It covers topics such as electron waves, temporal dynamics, and the implications of this model on particle physics. With clear illustrations and easy-to-follow explanations, readers will gain a new outlook on the universe's fundamental nature.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
