The Dreaded English Class
The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't know for sure. I still need to decide what my
major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class
will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing
skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to
complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another
stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as bad as it is
said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to
balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once
you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will
give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more writing experience in

My Experience In English Writing
English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to advance their knowledge. Not only does English
provide an advancement in knowlege, but has created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why English
is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in America including mine. I began taking English from a young
age which allowed me to take advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English IV allowed me to
further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any
other thing in life there are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was something that was very
challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in
my English class was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write about the experience I had while
hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my
thoughts, so that it flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around more then I should have and this
became a problem. I learned

Review of English Semester Essay
English 101–60 has taught me many things and has helped me grow and develop my skills as a writer. It has taught me how to think more creatively
and use clear concrete details. In the beginning of the semester, our first writing assignment was a narrative journal entry that focused on writing about
an uninteresting moment from your life and making it interesting. This was a challenging assignment because it was a broad topic that allowed the
writers to take it in any direction. I remember thinking I had no idea what I am going to write about. Once I was able to narrow down the ideas I started
writing what a traumatic experience I had six years ago. This was when I underwent the surgical procedure, to remove my gallbladder. My main focus

Once I found that topic, I was able to start writing the research paper, My group faced a couple of challenges along the way. One of the biggest
challenges we faced was all of us meeting the length requirement because were all still in the beginning stages of the assignment. The workshop
group was a new experience for me because I have never worked with that many person, this kind of overwhelmed me because there was so many
opinion on one paper. The groups weakness was, our lack of organization. Fortunately, we were able to make this up with all of us being very
truthful towards each other and not sugarcoating the revisions we suggested among our papers. We all accomplished the beginning stages of
writing our research papers and making sure everyone had their thesis there. Over the semester I have been challenged and intrigued over and over
by the content of this course and the professor, who thought I could develop a fairly strong paper if it was not for all my grammatical errors. It has
been a very enlightening and enthralling experience that has taught me a new way to write a paper. In high school there was only one way to write
and that was it. I think that this class is a great way for students to think out of the box, rather than having to be stuck. It allows them to write more
freely about a subject, and I am very thankful for that. I have learned many new skills and improved the skills I already

English Composition Reflective Essay
English composition has taught me everything I know now, from how to effectively write a thesis to grammatically fix my essay. This class fixed my
writing skills to speak and write incorrect terms. English composition gave me the edge I need to take my writing skills to next level. This class has
helped me understand the importance of documentation in a research skill. English composition showed me that sources either make or break your essay
. The true honesty of this course was that I am glad I took it. At first, I hate this class so much, because this class required so much extra work to be
done, but over time I realized that the extra work really pushes you over the edge to make your essay great. The extra work justifies your essay and

My English Skills Essay
Learning a language is one of the most difficult skills that a human can ever learn. Yet, it is also one of the most critical skills that everyone must
develop to properly live in a civilized society. Learning a second language such as English is no different, except that it is for the great benefit of
having the opportunity to be eligible for many more jobs inside and outside the birth country. Naturally, it is why developing English skills is the

school that I have the choice to choose the so–called English Program course in which the teacher for every subject except Thai and History taught in
English. Consequently, the constant exposure to English language classes up to this day is what formed the root of all the motivation I have today for
maintaining my improvement on my English skills. Furthermore, as the result of the motivation, learning English by myself became the primary
passive activity for all of my leisure time. Since the last decade, the online world has become the primary place where I always read and listen to
everything in English. For instance, when watching YouTube videos, I always listen for the content that is spoken in the video. At the same time, I
also exposed myself to all kinds of English accents, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, which in turn means lead to less effort on trying to
understand real conversations in English. Indeed, the ways I have advanced my English skills is the backbone of all the motivation to keep it strong and

Good English And Bad By Bill Bryson
In his article "Good English and Bad", Bill Bryson focuses on how English grammar changes throughout history. He stresses that people should
not worry about how to use English correctly because English derives from Latin and not all Latin rules should be applied to English grammar. In
the article "Why Good English is Good for You", John Simon stresses how English must be used in a proper way by following its rules. Simon
believes that good English can express one's idea clearly and people should spread the use of good English. Both Bryson and Simon have good
points, but sometimes people should avoid following grammatical rules in order to freely express one's idea, but sometimes people should follow it
in order to write a good paper. The use of standard English rules should vary depending on who is using it. In the article "Why Good English is Good
for You", John Simon argues that " 'Figure out' is precisely what a listener or reader should not have to do" (532). In Simon's perspective, when people
use correct grammar to write, the audience will understand the message. On the other hand, Simon emphasizes on how important standard English
rules are for people, especially to illustrate their points of view or arguments. But those people who struggle with English can not handle standard
English rules when they socialize, such as immigrants in the United States. As we know, most immigrants' native languages are not English. When they

Saying Goodbye Essay
I never thought this day would come. I mean, I did know it was coming, but I just never thought it would be this soon. Since birth, Lina has been
my older sister, my companion, my confidant, and moreover, my best friend. As years passed, I acknowledged that we were getting older, and that
the date of her departure was getting closer, yet, I did not want to believe it. Since last year, she had been in the exhausting process of applying to
universities, and by the end of May, the University of New Orleans (UNO) granted her with a generous scholarship. With a smile full of pride and
amazement, she accepted the scholarship and reserved her space in the Psychology field in the UNO. Overshadowed by the great news of her
scholarship, we failed to...show more content...
Suddenly, she stood up and a warm smile lightened her face. Her eyes shone with excitement as her three best friends approached her. They talked and
laughed zealously; they joked as if they had forgotten what was about to happen in less than an hour. I could not help myself from watching her.
Her smile was genuine and her sight deep. Her voice was melodic while she recounted all the anecdotes the four girls had shared for six long years.
She moved her hands while she talked and showed her perfectly white teeth while she laughed. There was no fear in her face, just a spark of
adventure glistened at the corner of her eyes. She was about to undertake a journey to the small state of Louisiana, to the beautiful jazz city of
New Orleans, and even at the verge of starting a new life on her own, she showed no signs of anxiety or uneasiness. There were so many reasons
why not to cry: she was happy, she was young, she had a great opportunity to study abroad, something not everyone has, and many more that would
take me a whole day to mention. However, I only needed one reason why to cry: I would no longer have her by my side. As a tremendous storm, an
urge of crying overwhelmed me, and all I could do was to sit down, hide my face in my hands and let my emotions overpower me. She looked at me
and frowned. I knew it hurt her to see me that way, but I couldn't stop. She came near me and hugged me, without saying a word. What

Essay About My English Class
I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having
to write college essays made me get even more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally
decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I
thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right
track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did
not know what to expect with an English class. I liked writing about topics that interested me, but high school did not allow me to do that. I took

I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed
me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique
before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I
started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they
would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there
should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a
writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into the writer I am

English 101 Made Me a Better Writer
Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In
my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also
learned a lot about writing that I hadn't learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research
essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on
essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to
take on the world on my own. During the beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent too
much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and
classmates made on my essays were truly helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we went
over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter
when I started writing some of my essays for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first. After a while of brainstorming ideas

My Experience throughout English 101
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing
only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors
throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college
and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write
to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.

Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense.
Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I
could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically.
"A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical
analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor.
This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays.
Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a
writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of
audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several
unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what
matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and

October 19, 2016 Reflection Paper
It's hard to believe that it's already time for Midterms in my English 101 class. The adventure has been a lot easier than I at first anticipated. In any

required different papers to be turned in, I am appreciative to have possessed the capacity to gain from my oversights and develop as a writer. I have

What makes a good teacher? Essay
In my opinion, a good teacher should be one who puts her heart into teaching. This is because only by doing so will the students feel their passion
and hard work. When a teacher strives hard for the students, students will put in their effort as well. If a teacher dislikes her job, goes to classes in a
bad mood, her teaching would also be affected and students would not be able to enjoy lessons as well.
Another point that makes a good teacher would be his/her patience. Teachers should not get upset or even worse, give up on the students who are not
so strong in their studies. Instead, they should have the patience to slowly coach them, give them extra lessons, and find different ways to encourage
them. Let them know that the teacher...show more content...

Everyone else might want to be the sun that lights up your life, but I rather be the moon that guides you through your darkest hours. Let's strive hard
and work toward our goal together!" This was what my high school teacher told me 10 years ago and I have remembered it until now, and will

My English 101 Experience
As I look back on my English 101 experience, I have come to the conclusion that I have learned many new things that have improved my abilities as a
writer. I have learned some new techniques that have improved my ways of approaching an essay. I learned all about the rhetorical appeals and how to
apply them in my writing and how to look for them in a essay written by a author. I have also learned how to argue both sides of a argument, and how
to look for reliable sources and to properly quote and site the author of the essay. I feel as if I have become a better writer and my improved writing

I now see myself as a writer who has learned new techniques to help improve my writing including style, word choice and the revision process.
Even though I see myself as a improved writer, I still believe I have plenty of room for improvement. When I first started English 101, I saw myself
as having a few good strengths and a lot of weaknesses as a writer. Some of my strengths included being able to write a good introduction minus the
thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to
understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the
semester is learning how to write an essay where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved on
knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in my essay and on how to include both sides of a
argument in my paper. Another improvement I found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are
some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. For example, even though I have learned all about the rhetorical
appeals and how to determine them in a essay, I still feel as if I do not know how to properly included them in my essay. I also see myself as improving

The Power of Language Essay examples
The Power of Language Language plays an important role in communication by bringing people together and enriching their relationships.
Language can also alienate those who do not speak it properly, or at all, from those who do. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known
for her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many powers that language holds. These essays reflect
how by not speaking a language in proper form and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories. People who can
speak a certain language, but only in 'broken' form, are generally looked down upon by native language speakers. In her writing, Mother Tongue, Amy

However, many Hispanic families were and in some cases, still are viewed as lower–class citizens. According to Barrientos, "To me, speaking Spanish
translated into being poor. It meant waiting tables and cleaning hotel rooms. It meant being left off the cheerleading squad and receiving a
condescending smile from the guidance counselor when you said you planned on becoming a lawyer or a doctor" (561). They are not respected in
a lot of communities, they live dirty, and they have bad jobs. These stereotypes are reasons why Barrientos did not want to be called Mexican and
never wanted to learn Spanish. If diversity had been celebrated when Barrientos was a child, as it is celebrated and honored now, she would have
grown up speaking Spanish and being proud of her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but as
they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and
Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage and
enrolled in many Spanish classes. With each enrollment, she faced yet another stereotype that came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors
thought she should already know Spanish since she was Latina. Barrientos is now determined to learn her native language. Tan has learned to love the

How to Be A Good Student Essay
How to Be A Good Student
To become a success in life, we all need to learn to become a good student in every aspect of life. Becoming a good student takes much work and
self–discipline. There are many ways that a student can stand out from the rest of the class. These good students are distinguished by their attitude,
intellectual skills, consciousness, and achievement.
Attitude is primarily a genuine desire to learn and the will to do hard academic work to achieve understanding. It is also shown by how well you
apply yourself even to subjects in which you have little interest and how much you can achieve even when a teacher's style is not what you are used to.
Also attitude can change the way you percieveperceive things...show more content...
No one else can help you to attain a good attitude, you must decide and make it a goal to have a good attitude in your student life. (CS)
Intellectual skills is (S–V Agr) another important aspect of becoming a good student. This skill includes the ability to read and understand, intelligent
use of resources, mathematical and logical skills, efficient study habits, and the ability to communicate clearly and fluently. Intellectual skills include
time management, exam strategies, study strategies, and goal setting.
Consciousness, or awareness, is another helpful aspect of becoming a good student. The good student must be aware of their (agr) surroundings and
know what is going on in the world around them. We must strive to relate what is happening around us to what we are learning. This should be
important to us because we should care about what is going on politically, academically, socially, and spiritually. Being aware and paying attention is a
good trait to continually learn and apply.
Achievement is demonstrated by successful application of understanding. This aspect includes using correct and confident knowledge, effective
communication, and continuanceing of education through out your life. Achievement gives you a sense of accomplishment and meaning. To become a
good student, this must be a goal that you wish to accomplish.
Becoming a good student can be time consuming but well worth

Reflection On My English 101 Experience
Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and
done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the
middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my
essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I
use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing,
and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not
have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it
holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the
importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate
enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle. Even before outlining, the topic, purpose, and audience of the

The Dreaded English Class

  • 1. The Dreaded English Class The dreaded English 102. Could this be my final English course in my career as a student? I don't know for sure. I still need to decide what my major will be in. There is something that I know for sure, that is, needing to take this class to move on. I am not certain how my time in this class will go, but I plan to work hard to get the best grade that I can. Hence, I have decided to get this out of the way now, I look to fine–tune my writing skills, and I expect this course to help me understand my writing style. To start, I chose this class because I knew that eventually I would need to complete it. What better time to do it, than right now? I had recently completed a math course this past semester, so I did not want to take another stressful class that I find to not be my strongest subject right after. My brother and some friends have mentioned that this course isn't as bad as it is said to be. That is what pushed me to sign up and attempt to complete this course. Being a part time student and working full time is a lot to balance on ones plate. I have learned that from experience. I formally was a full time student and worked part time, but the roles tend to reverse once you find yourself struggling to pay bills. Seeing that this class isn't as costly as a math course, and isn't as time restraining either. This course will give me more time at work and more time to study. This sums up the reasons I chose to complete English 102. I hope to gain more writing experience in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. My Experience In English Writing English is a core concept in the Untied States and other countries that has allowed inviduals to advance their knowledge. Not only does English provide an advancement in knowlege, but has created a way for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings through writing. Which is why English is one of the four subjects that is required to be taught in almost every school district in America including mine. I began taking English from a young age which allowed me to take advanced placement English IV my senior year at Tupelo High School. Advanced Placement English IV allowed me to further my education in writing, which in return allowed me to overcome obstacles, low points and discover strengths I never knew I had. Like any other thing in life there are always obstacles individuals face everyday, for me in my English IV class writing was something that was very challenging. The first challenge writing presented to me was trying to organize all of my thoughts, so that it made sense. The first essay I ever wrote in my English class was a journal entry about a memorable experience, so with that being said I decided I would write about the experience I had while hunting with my Dad. The hunting experience with my dad had many different parts, and one of my biggest challenges I had was organizing my thoughts, so that it flowed correctly. Since I was telling a story within my journal I realized that I was jumping around more then I should have and this became a problem. I learned Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Review of English Semester Essay English 101–60 has taught me many things and has helped me grow and develop my skills as a writer. It has taught me how to think more creatively and use clear concrete details. In the beginning of the semester, our first writing assignment was a narrative journal entry that focused on writing about an uninteresting moment from your life and making it interesting. This was a challenging assignment because it was a broad topic that allowed the writers to take it in any direction. I remember thinking I had no idea what I am going to write about. Once I was able to narrow down the ideas I started writing what a traumatic experience I had six years ago. This was when I underwent the surgical procedure, to remove my gallbladder. My main focus ...show more content... Once I found that topic, I was able to start writing the research paper, My group faced a couple of challenges along the way. One of the biggest challenges we faced was all of us meeting the length requirement because were all still in the beginning stages of the assignment. The workshop group was a new experience for me because I have never worked with that many person, this kind of overwhelmed me because there was so many opinion on one paper. The groups weakness was, our lack of organization. Fortunately, we were able to make this up with all of us being very truthful towards each other and not sugarcoating the revisions we suggested among our papers. We all accomplished the beginning stages of writing our research papers and making sure everyone had their thesis there. Over the semester I have been challenged and intrigued over and over by the content of this course and the professor, who thought I could develop a fairly strong paper if it was not for all my grammatical errors. It has been a very enlightening and enthralling experience that has taught me a new way to write a paper. In high school there was only one way to write and that was it. I think that this class is a great way for students to think out of the box, rather than having to be stuck. It allows them to write more freely about a subject, and I am very thankful for that. I have learned many new skills and improved the skills I already Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. English Composition Reflective Essay English composition has taught me everything I know now, from how to effectively write a thesis to grammatically fix my essay. This class fixed my writing skills to speak and write incorrect terms. English composition gave me the edge I need to take my writing skills to next level. This class has helped me understand the importance of documentation in a research skill. English composition showed me that sources either make or break your essay . The true honesty of this course was that I am glad I took it. At first, I hate this class so much, because this class required so much extra work to be done, but over time I realized that the extra work really pushes you over the edge to make your essay great. The extra work justifies your essay and molds Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. My English Skills Essay Learning a language is one of the most difficult skills that a human can ever learn. Yet, it is also one of the most critical skills that everyone must develop to properly live in a civilized society. Learning a second language such as English is no different, except that it is for the great benefit of having the opportunity to be eligible for many more jobs inside and outside the birth country. Naturally, it is why developing English skills is the landmark goal that majority of people want to strive for. In my experience of developing my English skills, there are many things that I encounter as part of my development. The aspects throughout my English skill's development include how I developed the skills, the big hurdles hindering my mastery,...show more content... The first time I have attended classes in an English–speaking environment dated back to when I was still a 7th grader, which is the grade at my high school that I have the choice to choose the so–called English Program course in which the teacher for every subject except Thai and History taught in English. Consequently, the constant exposure to English language classes up to this day is what formed the root of all the motivation I have today for maintaining my improvement on my English skills. Furthermore, as the result of the motivation, learning English by myself became the primary passive activity for all of my leisure time. Since the last decade, the online world has become the primary place where I always read and listen to everything in English. For instance, when watching YouTube videos, I always listen for the content that is spoken in the video. At the same time, I also exposed myself to all kinds of English accents, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, which in turn means lead to less effort on trying to understand real conversations in English. Indeed, the ways I have advanced my English skills is the backbone of all the motivation to keep it strong and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 7. Good English And Bad By Bill Bryson In his article "Good English and Bad", Bill Bryson focuses on how English grammar changes throughout history. He stresses that people should not worry about how to use English correctly because English derives from Latin and not all Latin rules should be applied to English grammar. In the article "Why Good English is Good for You", John Simon stresses how English must be used in a proper way by following its rules. Simon believes that good English can express one's idea clearly and people should spread the use of good English. Both Bryson and Simon have good points, but sometimes people should avoid following grammatical rules in order to freely express one's idea, but sometimes people should follow it in order to write a good paper. The use of standard English rules should vary depending on who is using it. In the article "Why Good English is Good for You", John Simon argues that " 'Figure out' is precisely what a listener or reader should not have to do" (532). In Simon's perspective, when people use correct grammar to write, the audience will understand the message. On the other hand, Simon emphasizes on how important standard English rules are for people, especially to illustrate their points of view or arguments. But those people who struggle with English can not handle standard English rules when they socialize, such as immigrants in the United States. As we know, most immigrants' native languages are not English. When they communicate with other people in Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Saying Goodbye Essay I never thought this day would come. I mean, I did know it was coming, but I just never thought it would be this soon. Since birth, Lina has been my older sister, my companion, my confidant, and moreover, my best friend. As years passed, I acknowledged that we were getting older, and that the date of her departure was getting closer, yet, I did not want to believe it. Since last year, she had been in the exhausting process of applying to universities, and by the end of May, the University of New Orleans (UNO) granted her with a generous scholarship. With a smile full of pride and amazement, she accepted the scholarship and reserved her space in the Psychology field in the UNO. Overshadowed by the great news of her scholarship, we failed to...show more content... Suddenly, she stood up and a warm smile lightened her face. Her eyes shone with excitement as her three best friends approached her. They talked and laughed zealously; they joked as if they had forgotten what was about to happen in less than an hour. I could not help myself from watching her. Her smile was genuine and her sight deep. Her voice was melodic while she recounted all the anecdotes the four girls had shared for six long years. She moved her hands while she talked and showed her perfectly white teeth while she laughed. There was no fear in her face, just a spark of adventure glistened at the corner of her eyes. She was about to undertake a journey to the small state of Louisiana, to the beautiful jazz city of New Orleans, and even at the verge of starting a new life on her own, she showed no signs of anxiety or uneasiness. There were so many reasons why not to cry: she was happy, she was young, she had a great opportunity to study abroad, something not everyone has, and many more that would take me a whole day to mention. However, I only needed one reason why to cry: I would no longer have her by my side. As a tremendous storm, an urge of crying overwhelmed me, and all I could do was to sit down, hide my face in my hands and let my emotions overpower me. She looked at me and frowned. I knew it hurt her to see me that way, but I couldn't stop. She came near me and hugged me, without saying a word. What Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the "Common Sense" textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the "Subjects and Strategies" textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past ...show more content... This allowed me to write more extensively on the topic I had chosen which in turn helped expand the size of my research paper. I received a B on my final draft; the first passing grade I have ever received on a research paper. I am very satisfied with my grade. When it came to the essays writing became a little trickier because I had to understand what it was I needed to write about and the style in which I need to write it in. There are nine essay writing methods which I learned while attending this course: exemplification, compare/contrast, cause and effect, proposal, narration, process, division/classification, definition, and argument. The only problems I encountered when trying to write the essays that were assigned to me by the instructor was finding suitable subject matter to write about. Once I found my topics for my essay, everything else became easier. I would first produce a rough draft and then the students, the instructor, and myself would go over them in class and decided if what I was writing was in its best form. Most of my rough drafts needed improvement, but if it didn't it wouldn't be a rough draft, so it was understood. My final drafts were very satisfying for me as well as the grades I received on them. For my exemplification essay I chose to write about the reasons why condoms Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Essay About My English Class I can remember seeing that I had to take an English class my first semester of college. I was already overwhelmed with starting college, and having to write college essays made me get even more nervous. I sat down with my mom and decided to look at the English classes available, and I finally decided that I had to take an evening class to make it work in my schedule. The first day of English came and now looking back it was not as bad as I thought. It made me a better writer and be where I am today. It may have taken me some time to get where I am today, but at least I am on the right track. English Composition helped me realize that I am my own author and have strengths that I did not realize I had. When I first started college I did not know what to expect with an English class. I learned many techniques from my professor. He helped me realize that it is okay to have your own opinion as long as you back it up. He showed me that I am an author when I did not think I was. He also told us to read our essays out loud when we proofread, and I always did this technique before submitting all my essays. I can remember having to write my first essay and I was scared, because I felt like I had to get a good grade. I started thinking about what tools I could use to help me, and I decided to go to The Learning Center to help with my essay. When I went there they would make edits to my essay and then explain what I should change. The tutor noticed I used multiple choppy sentences and commas in spots there should not be. Sometimes I would even go twice to make sure I did not miss any minor mistakes. Going there helped me feel more confident as a writer and I learned from my mistakes. I had many helpful techniques from multiple people that shaped me into the writer I am Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 11. English 101 Made Me a Better Writer Everyone on the planet has a goal set in life, but only a handful attempt to improve to obtain their goal by studying the subject their goal is in. In my English class, English 101 this quarter I was astonished by how much I had progressed as a writer sharpening my writing skills and also learned a lot about writing that I hadn't learned before. In my writing portfolio for this quarter I had to write an autobiography essay, a research essay, and this reflection essay to develop my writing skills better. The writing assignments were fun to do because it challenged me to work on essays of different styles that were new to me. The essay assignments helped me grow as a better writer that gave me the self–confidence and skills to take on the world on my own. During the beginning of the English 101 when we began the writing process: I thought at first that we spent too much time on our essays but I soon realized how important it was spending time on the essays to improve them . The revisions that my teacher and classmates made on my essays were truly helpful for me because it allowed me to better my writing. For every week in the entire course we went over the MLA formatting process, annotating, citing within the essay, and how to make the paper flow better. I had the most troubles in this quarter when I started writing some of my essays for my portfolio because I didn't have a clue how to start them at first. • 12. My experience throughout English 101 Essay My Experience throughout English 101 As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. Also, by revising my essays I felt that I had the chance of writing with a broader sense. Another weakness that I had coming into English 101 was my way of reading. I remember having to read an essay or book 3 or 4 times before I could ever sit down and write about it. I was looking and at the words all wrong. However, my professor introduced a technique of reading critically. "A critical analysis, on the other hand, takes a viewpoint and attempts to its validity;" (Trimble, 95) In Trimble's quote he is trying say that a critical analysis helps a reader understand what the author is really trying to point out. This was the same approach that was taught to me by my professor. This type of analysis helped me understand better what the author was trying to convey and it also helped me explain it better in my essays. Additionally, another weakness that I had when coming into English 101 was that I was a selfish writer. Like Trimble said, "His natural tendency as a writer is to think primarily of himself– hence to write primarily for himself." (Trimble, 4) I was a writer who only cared about impressing one type of audience my professor and not writing to prove a point or expand my knowledge to several other audiences. However, after writing several unsatisfying essays I had come to realize that my style of writing was too narrow and boring. In this realization of writing I discovered that what matters the most is pleasing your audience (many not one), and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 14. What makes a good teacher? Essay In my opinion, a good teacher should be one who puts her heart into teaching. This is because only by doing so will the students feel their passion and hard work. When a teacher strives hard for the students, students will put in their effort as well. If a teacher dislikes her job, goes to classes in a bad mood, her teaching would also be affected and students would not be able to enjoy lessons as well. Another point that makes a good teacher would be his/her patience. Teachers should not get upset or even worse, give up on the students who are not so strong in their studies. Instead, they should have the patience to slowly coach them, give them extra lessons, and find different ways to encourage them. Let them know that the teacher...show more content... Everyone else might want to be the sun that lights up your life, but I rather be the moon that guides you through your darkest hours. Let's strive hard and work toward our goal together!" This was what my high school teacher told me 10 years ago and I have remembered it until now, and will remember it for the next 10 years and so on. I was once a problematic kid who mixed with bad company and flunk tests. I never thought about what I was going to do the next day, what more when I grew up. Of course when I was younger, I had lots of dreams. I wanted to set up my own company, I wanted to be a teacher, I wanted to be able to drive an airplane and the list went on. But as the years went by, they became less insignificant to me and soon, I forgot every single one of those dreams and goals. I got to a new school and knew friends who smoke and took drugs. My grades started dropping from "A" to fails. But I did not care. I could not be bothered by then. I went partying every night and got home drunk. What was the point of studying? Some of my strengths included being able to write a good introduction minus the thesis part. I also saw myself as knowing how to write a good conclusion that summarized what I talked about in my essay and being able to understand a article or essay by knowing what the author was talking about. Some of the improvements I saw in my writing thorough out the semester is learning how to write an essay where I can communicate with the audience with my own personal voice. I also feel I improved on knowing how to properly include quotes and how to find good creditable sources to include in my essay and on how to include both sides of a argument in my paper. Another improvement I found in my papers is learning how to revise them and approach each essay. However, there are some items of writing that I believe I improved on but still needs some work. • 16. The Power of Language Essay examples The Power of Language Language plays an important role in communication by bringing people together and enriching their relationships. Language can also alienate those who do not speak it properly, or at all, from those who do. The essays, Mother Tongue, by Amy Tan, best known for her book, The Joy Luck Club, and Se Habla Espanol, by Tanya Barrientos, delve into the many powers that language holds. These essays reflect how by not speaking a language in proper form and by not speaking a language at all, affects the lives of the subjects of the stories. People who can speak a certain language, but only in 'broken' form, are generally looked down upon by native language speakers. According to Barrientos, "To me, speaking Spanish translated into being poor. It meant waiting tables and cleaning hotel rooms. It meant being left off the cheerleading squad and receiving a condescending smile from the guidance counselor when you said you planned on becoming a lawyer or a doctor" (561). They are not respected in a lot of communities, they live dirty, and they have bad jobs. These stereotypes are reasons why Barrientos did not want to be called Mexican and never wanted to learn Spanish. If diversity had been celebrated when Barrientos was a child, as it is celebrated and honored now, she would have grown up speaking Spanish and being proud of her heritage. Children are very impressionable and tend to take on others' opinions as their own, but as they grow older, they develop a greater understanding and perspective of the way things are and the way they should be. As adults, both Tan and Barrientos learned to accept and embrace the languages that previously embarrassed them. Barrientos immersed herself in her Mexican heritage and enrolled in many Spanish classes. With each enrollment, she faced yet another stereotype that came with being of Mexican ethnicity; her instructors thought she should already know Spanish since she was Latina. • 19. Reflection On My English 101 Experience Reflecting on My English 101 Experience I used to consider writing as tumble words from your mind, write, read it through, fix minor mistakes, and done. However, you rarely get successful. The truth is many students, including myself, struggle with starting to write a word, or getting stuck in the middle without knowing the main point of the writing. After completing English 101, I can explain the writing process, evaluate the strengths of my essay, and identify my weaknesses. Throughout English 101, I learned that the following the writing process was imperative. Before taking this class, I use to always skip the pre–writing step considering that it is just an easy and unnecessary step. Consequently, I struggled to figure how to start writing, and most importantly I struggled to figure out the main point while writing the draft. And then I finish the first draft close to the deadline that I do not have time to read it not to mention revising. It was after I started this class that learned that pre–writing is vital, and requires time and attention as it holds the base of the whole writing. My professor used different analogies such as blueprint for building and map for navigation to explain the importance. It really speeded up my writing after I started to utilize it. I have learned outlining before, but part of the pre–writing that I was fortunate enough to learning in English 101 is the writing triangle.
